A. Essay Questions

Direction: Read the question carefully, explain comprehensively your answer on separate

sheet or paper.

1. Discuss in your own words the biological, chemical and physical negative impacts of aquaculture on
the environment.

Aquaculture have arisen around its negative impact to environment. Most of them related to the
destruction of ecosystems such as mangrove forest to construct aquaculture farms, as well as the
environmental impacts of the effluents on the receiving ecosystems. Aquaculture is a possible panacea,
but at present is also responsible for diverse problems related with the environmental health, waters
eutrophication, water quality, alteration or destruction of natural habitats; introduction and
transmission of aquatic animal diseases. Aquaculture has been accused to be the cause of many
environmental, social, economic, and inclusively esthetic problems. Ecosystems are not always as fragile
as could be considered, instead, they have remarkable capacity of resiliency, and as long as basic
processes are not irretrievably upset, ecosystems will continue to recycle and distribute energy.

2. Discuss the possible measures to minimize the biological, chemical and physical negative impacts of
aquaculture on the environment.

Negative impacts of aquaculture to the environment cannot be stop but it can lessen its effect. Some
plans had been conducted by the government specially the FAO to formulate results in every
assessments regarding the impacts of aquaculture in ecology. For me, before conducting an operation to
open a site for marine farming, we must first formulate and develop management plans. Applying an
assessment process to all major aquaculture proposals. Select suitable sites for coastal aquaculture.
Assess the capacity of the ecosystem to sustain aquaculture development with minimal ecological
change. Establish guidelines governing the use of mangrove wetland for coastal aquaculture. Assess and
evaluate the true consequences of transfers and introductions of exotic organisms. Establish quality
control measures for aquaculture products. Monitory the changes of ecology is the priority of aqua
farmers as it represents the impact of the project you create in farming. After seeing the effect little by
little, apply incentives and deterrents to reduce environmental degradation from aquaculture activities.
3. Discuss the different measures to avoid red tide and fish kills.

These are the measures that can possibly avoid red tide when it comes to marine farming. Avoid
washing cars in paved areas. The soaps and chemicals used to wash cars run off into your area's
drainage system and eventually into the ocean. Protect the natural watershed by conserving water. In
this way, it reduces wastewater that has harmful chemicals entering natural waterways and contributing
to algal blooms. Maintaining the septic system and repaired immediately when its broken. Septic tank
leaks send wastewater into the watershed where it may flow into natural waterways and oceans. The
chemicals in this wastewater can exacerbate red tides. As a citizen, you can donate to nonprofit
organizations that cares for oceans. It may be local, national, and international nonprofit organizations
that monitors and care for the world's oceans. They need a fund to buy technologies to use for
monitoring and preserving the good water of oceans. If you can donate money to support their work,
you can help prevent red tide. Sharing information about red tides with your friends and family. By this,
you will help them learn the do’s and don’ts when it comes to marine life. And last is to participate in
your community. When there is an activity about Clean up drive in marine waters, don’t hesitate to help.
A simple help can protect our water resources and prevent diseases for marine life and humans as well.
