Reflection – ‘North Country’

The movie named ‘North Country’ is talking about the character Josey is a woman that
abuse by her husband and brings her two children (Sammy and Karen) go back to her parent’s
house (Hank and Alice) and found a job and stay at there. Josey gets a job introduced by her
friend and starts working at an iron mines factory, but the worker's gender rate is imbalanced
which male workers outnumbered female workers by thirty to one. This had caused some issues
to arise in the society that unfair to the female in the factory.

The movie is about the factory that involve in mining that related to the topic on ethics
and the environment. Activity mining in the movie will affect the environment pollution as air,
water, sound and land pollution. Since mining is develop the natural resources mining is an
activity that depletion the non-renewable natural resources. Moreover, the environmental right
where human have a right to fulfil their capacities as free and rational and a liveable
environment is essential to such fulfilment. So, this human right to liveable environment that
lead to the destroy the environment. Thus, the environmental right can action in bans on the
pollution activities when the costs is more than the benefit. The movie also related with the
alternative approach to the pollution where the issue arise is relate with the masculine and
feminine where the men workers in the mining factory oppression women workers through
saying women are not suitable in working there. For instance, Josey and her co-worker are
oppressing by the men workers that working in the same mining job. This appeal ecofeminism
approach in lead to alternative pollution in the social.

In the movie also related with the balancing right to privacy and business needs in the
ethics of consumer. Where the right to privacy and business needs must attain the purpose of
collecting information legitimate between business need and the consumer benefit, the
information collecting purpose informed to the person an also the information is accurately. In
the movie that showed that the lawyer of Pearson, Leslie Conlin judge that she has the evidence
that the women workers stating they do not face abuse. But in fact, the women workers do not
know the incident of Leslie said they are not get abuse and this action has become illegal action
done by Leslie Conlin that the information are not accurate and do not inform the women
workers purpose of she judged. All Leslie done is only caring for the business needs where to
help the client Mr Pearson to win for the case although the collected information are not in
ethics.
The movie ‘North Country’ that show shown the discrimination in society, which is the
wrongful act of distinguishing illicitly among people not based on individual merit but based
on prejudice or some other invidious or morally reprehensible attitude. Intentional
discrimination contains in the story in which the women who work at the iron mine factory get
the discrimination of the action from the other male workers that work at the same factory. As
a result, the ratio of the men worker and female worker at the mine factory is 30:1, there is a
big gap between the number of workers between man and women. For instance, the character’s
parent Hank who also works at mine believes that women shouldn’t be working there.

Besides, the story also presented the problem of women are steered into sexual
harassment. Women’s work in the iron mine factory face significant disadvantages. The
discrimination had violated basic human rights by holding women as ‘inferior’. This is shown
in the movie that Josey's co-worker facing the unrespect action by the other worker who takes
things from her shirt pocket instead of joseph’s friend take it out to him. This had infringed
women's privacy body part that express to unrespect. This is also faced by Josey where she get
unrespect action from her ex-boyfriend, Bobby that wishes to get a kiss from her. But as a
result, Josey is rejected, and he revenges Josey by spreading the rumor to get Josey in trouble.

Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, invitation for sexual


favors or other physical interaction of sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment. Sexual
harassment contains the purpose to affect an individual’s work performance or creating
threatening, unfriendly and attacking working surroundings. The movie had shown Josey
targeted by her ex-boyfriend Bobby Sharp, she is sexually assaulted by Bobby at work and
experiences additional harassment and even abuse in retaliation, that Bobby spreads rumors
about Josey tried to seduce him and this has caused to Josey facing Bobby’s wife publicly
berate and humiliate. This has led to other people in the society has believed in the rumors and
gossip about Josey alleged promiscuity.

The legal status of affirmative action contains the employers cannot be used in layoffs
with the discrimination. In the story talk about Josey bring her problem to find help to the
mine's owner, Don Pearson, who had the previous promise that he can assurance Josey if need
the help. But when Josey arrives to find him, he has invited other executives and offers to
accept her resignation immediately. The result shows that Pearson believes the rumors about
her promiscuity, leaves devastated. The company unable to have a fair balance in trial in finding
the truth of the rumors instead based on Bobby's testimony that Josey first (Sammy) is the result
of a consensual sexual relationship between Josey and her high school teacher, Paul
Lattavansky. And the mining company's attorney attempts to hold Josey's sexual history against
her,

Moral responsibility for the working condition should be focus by the mined company
that knows about the workers working condition where the problem that women workers are
in the unfair situation and get the unrespect treat by the man workers in the workplace place.
Caring organisation will ensure conducive and safe the working environment for their workers
and the company should prevent from changing the condition. But this are not applied in the
mined company, for instance minted company has prevented from changing the condition of
hire the women workers much more lesser than man workers and lead to the women has a
lower position in the job place due to insufficient power to stand up and fight for their right.
Like the case in the movie where the female miners, fear losing their jobs and facing additional
harassment, so Josey attempts to go ahead with the case alone without stand out together with
Josey to against their company in court.

In conclusion, women have the right to voice out to get a fair balance treat in society
with the male gender. Women don’t get unfair treatment such as discrimination and sexual
harassment, especially in the job field. There are many more women nowadays who get the
opportunities in the job place to work with a man or even better result than man work. Thus as
the result, the mining company had to pay for the women workers for their suffering. This is
the result that in the end many of the women who work at the mines company stand out to
support Josey in the court. Several male miners didn’t unrespect the women workers followed
to stand with them against the company. The outcome is to establish a landmark sexual
harassment policy as protection to the female miners at the job place.
