General Introduction

Communication is the most important process we attempt to accomplish in our

daily life. The way we exchange thoughts and ideas with each other, and the

way we transfer information in space and even in time. Communication has

different figures; writing is one of them. In learning English as a foreign

language, writing could be a difficult task to many students. Some students

struggle to express themselves through writing, after exams many students

complain their mark. This deficit is considered one kind of learning disabilities

that is Dysgraphia.

The study aims to clarify the meaning of Dysgraphia and all what is related to

it. Moreover, it seeks to explore its effect on assessing EFL student’s written

expression. The present work is divided into three chapters: the first chapter

provides a theoretical overview of Dysgraphia and handwriting. Thus, some

definitions related to these concepts are discussed. In addition, explaining

Dysgraphia types, symptoms, and how it is related to poor handwriting.

The second chapter considers some definitions concerning the concepts

Assessment and written expression.

The third chapter tackles the research design and methodology. The

description of the research methods, sampling, and research tools used in this

study are also explained. Then, the results of the investigation are analyzed and

3
discussed. This chapter seeks also to answer the research question by confirming

or nullifying the research hypothesis.

Statment of the Problem

The present study considers mainly fourth-year middle school students who

exhibit a lack of writing proficiency. The problematic of this study is to clarify

whether Dysgraphia has an effect on assessing EFL students’ written expression

or not.

1. The Aim of the Study

The present research intends to reach a better understanding of Dysgraphia

effect on the assessment of students’ written expression in learning EFL.

Moreover, it aims at spotting light transfer as achieve possible set of valued

information that can be gathered from Dysgraphic students.

Research Question

This study will be guided by the following research question:

- What is the effect of Dysgraphia on teachers’ assessment of students’

written expression? In other words:

- Does Dysgraphia affect teachers’ assessment of students’ written

expression?

4
Hypothesis

We hypothesize that Dysgraphia affects teachers when assessing their students’

written expression.

The Significance of the Study

The researchers hope that this study will benefit English teachers, to raise their

awareness and provide a better understanding of Dysgraphia problems, and if it

affects their assessment of students’ written expression. To test the suggested

hypothesis, researchers have chosen an experiment as a research tool instead of

the questionnaire because it gives a valid data in contrast to questionnaire.

The study will shed some light on the different symptoms and types of

Dysgraphia, this; maybe useful to enable teachers to use suitable teaching

techniques to enhance their students’ written expression and help them to better

their handwriting.

The Objectives of the Study

This study designed to identify how Dysgraphia affects the assessment of

students’ written expression. Specifically it sought to:

1. To raise teachers awareness to understand Dysgraphia problems.

2. Determine the meaning of Dysgraphia.

3. Clarify the relationship between Dysgraphia and the assessment of written

expression.

5
Limitation of the Study

The idea of this research study came for the fact and the phenomena seen after

the exams, many students complain their marks after delaying them and that

they should get higher marks, why is that? To accomplish this study an

experiment is used as data collection instead of questionnaire and in addition to

different limitations to get valid data. This work is restricted only to an amount

of students. There were some difficulties and obstacles such as finding suitable

middle school that contains the desirable sample, the teachers’ cooperation;

many teachers refused to do an experiment with their students without having an

idea about it, and regarding also to the shortage of time.
