Bitdefender Installation

Guide

Follow the steps below to install Bitdefender Gravity Zone onto your YLabs device. The
installation of this software is mandatory on all YLabs computers.

In order to begin the installation process, you’ll need an email invite from Bitdefender to set up
your account. If you have not received this email, please contact Katie to get added.

Also included are troubleshooting tips in the case of malware detection as well as general best
practices.

Step by Step Installation Guide

When you first open the email from Bitdefender, click on the link “Control Center Address” to
create your login and begin the install process on your device.

The email includes your temporary password that you can change once you’ve logged in for the
first time.

Once logged in you should see a screen similar to this (might vary slightly depending on your
admin access):

Select the option to install on this computer now.

When you run the installer you should see this window. Double click the antivirus for mac.pkg

Once opened you should be taken through a quick dialog (like the one below) to complete the
installation.

Once the installation has completed, Bitdefender will likely say that your device is “at risk”.
You’re only at risk because Bitdefender hasn’t been given all of the proper permissions to scan
everything yet.

Click on “View Issues” to give permissions to Bitdefender to access your device’s content.

When you select “View Issues” you’ll get a dialog like this one:

Click “Open Privacy” and you’ll see this screen:

Click the lock at the bottom left and enter your laptop password. Check the box next to Endpoint
security for mac” to give permissions to Bitdefender.

Once access is granted you should be good to go!

How often should you scan?

I recommend running a full scan when you first install Bitdefender (this will likely take a couple of
hours).

After that, running a Quick Scan once weekly should be enough (~15 minutes)

You can run both of these types of scans in the background while you continue working.

What happens if Bitdefender detects a problem or you

suspect your device has a virus?

If Bitdefender detects an issue, try first to resolve it within the app. If this is not possible, follow
the steps outlined below.

1. Disconnect from the internet.
2. Enter Safe Mode
a. For Mac:
i. Start (or restart) your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key.
The Apple logo will appear on your display.
ii. Release the Shift key when you see the login window (if you are asked to log
in twice, learn more about what to do here).

b. For Windows:
i. Restart your PC.
ii. When you see the sign-in screen, hold down the Shift key and select Power
→ Restart.
iii. After your PC restarts, to the “Choose an option” screen, select: Troubleshoot
→ Advanced Options → Startup Settings.
iv. On the next window, click the Restart button and wait for the next screen to
appear.
v. A menu will appear with numbered startup options. Select number 4 or F4 to
start your PC in Safe Mode. (safe mode).
3. Avoid logging into accounts during malware removal
4. Check your activity monitor
a.Doing this can help to determine which processes are consuming the most space
and energy. It’s good to get familiar with this utility in general to get an idea of what
processes pack the hardest punch on your device.
b. For Mac:
i. In Finder select → Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor → Select
Application → Quit
c. For PC:
i. Settings → Administrative Tools → Resource Monitor → End task → Right
Click → End Process
5. Check your web browser
a. Make sure that your default browser and homepage have not been altered
unintentionally (aka by malware). You can check this from your browser’s settings.
(You will have to connect to the internet for this portion).
6. Clear your cache
a. To clear Chrome cache: History → Clear Browsing Data → Time Range → All Time →
Clear Data. Other browsers will be similar.

General Security Best Practices
- Generally, copying and pasting passwords is safe. However, if you’re unsure at all about the
current security of your device or the website you’re using, do not copy and paste a
password into a field. When in doubt, just type out the password yourself.
- Empty your trash often - this can help with security as well as space issues.
- Keep your operating system updated.
- Employ two factor authentication when possible.
