China Quick Facts

•  China is officially known as the People's


Republic of China.
•  China has the largest population in the
world, with over 1.38 billion people 2018
(that means one-in-five of the world’s
population is Chinese).
•  The capital city of China is Beijing, while China’s flag
the largest city is Shanghai.
•  China is the world’s second largest
economy after the United States of
America.
•  The main languages of China are
Mandarin (70% of the population) and
Cantonese.

China is the world’s
third largest
country by area
(9,706,961 sq km).

China’s vast
landscape includes
grasslands, deserts,
mountains, lakes,
rivers and more
than 14,000 km of
coastline.

China’s attractions
The Terracotta Army are life size terracotta sculptures
created more than 2000 years ago to be buried with
Emperor Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor. Seven
hundred thousand workers spent 40 years to made
more than 8,000 warriors, 670 horses, 130 chariots,
and many other sculptures to protect the Emperor and
entertain him in the afterlife.

The vast Forbidden City in Beijing was home
to Chinese emperors from 1420 to 1912 and
the country’s cente of power for almost 500
years.

The Great Wall of China is the largest human


made structure on earth, stretching an incredible
8,850 kilometres east to west across the northern
border of ancient China. The wall was built to
protect China from an invasion from the north.
Most of the wall was built between 1368 amd
1644 (a period known as the Ming Dynasty).
Forbidden City
The Giant Panda is
found in China’s
south mainly in
Sichuan province.
This amazing
creature’s diet
consists mostly of
bamboo. It is
thought that there
are fewer than
1,600 Giant Panda
alive today.
Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the world’s great cities. The territory on which Hong Kong stands
was controlled by the United Kingdom until 1997 when it was handed back to China.
The city’s population of 7.3 million is crowded into just 1,104 km2.

China’s Weather and Climate

China is a vast land


Very cold winters in
spanning many China’s north
degrees of latitude. It
also has a very
complicated terrain. As
a result, China has a
variety of temperature
and rainfall zones.
Winter in most areas
are cold and dry.
Summers are generally

Chinese Festivals
The most famous Chinese
festival is the Chinese New Year
(also called ‘The Spring Festival’).

It is celebrated at the beginning
of China’s spring and lunar cycle.

Each lunar cycle has 60 years
and 12 years is a small cycle,
each of which has an animal
sign: Rat, ox, tiger, dragon,
snake, horse, sheep, monkey,
rooster, dog and pig. 2018 is the
year of the dog.

Families celebrate the Chinese
New Year with a family reunion
dinners, fireworks and parades.
They also have 7–15 days off
work.
