HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL RELATED HAZARDS

PART 2:

STORM SURGE,
EL NINO & LA NINA
 The term storm surge are commonly confused
with tsunami and tidal wave. Storm surge
happens when there is a typhoon. Tidal wave
happened when there is a gravitational
attraction between the moon and the sun and
tsunami happened due to the seismic waves
under the sea caused by earthquake under
the sea.

STORM SURGE
Storm surge is just a temporary rise of
sea level caused by strong winds
associated to the typhoon that is about
to come. Storm surge may vary based
on the intensity of the wind.

UNDERSTANDING STORM SURGE BY

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
1. Forerunner- gradual increase in water level
2. Main surge- sudden rise of water when the storm
are close to the coast
3. Resurgence- when the water turns to normal

3 STAGES OF TYPICAL SURGE

OCCURRENCE
1.Review the coastal preparedness measurements
with your family
2. Go to higher ground at least 550 meters flat from
the land
3. Keep away from flowing streams into the sea

WHAT TO DO WHEN THERE IS POSSIBLE

STORM SURGE
1. Stay tuned to local radio
2. Stay alert and awake during night
3.Consider leaving during the day
taking with you your essential items
4. Evacuate when there still time

WHEN STORM SURGE APPROACHES

This two phenomenon are considered natural part of
our climate system. Our country and the Pacific
Ocean are just neighbours wherein if there is a
sudden changes in the temperature from the Pacific
Ocean most probably our climate may also vary.
These changes of the temperature are also known as
ENSO – El Nino Southern Oscillation.

EL NINO AND LA NINA

 Onthis phenomena the temperatures becomes warmer or
cooler than the usual. ENSO involves the interaction of the
atmosphere and the ocean that play a vital role in each
other.
 Dueto this disturbances, it may result to the formation of
typhoon, thunderstorms and droughts that causes massive
disaster in lives and in properties.
