LESSON 3: FEATURES OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION

LESSON ACTIVITY

“Mutual Choice”

Directions: Work with a partner and discuss the following situations. In each situation,
underline and select one side of the choices in parenthesis. Justify your answer and create a
short dialogue incorporating the features and functions of communication. Practice delivering
the conversations.
Note: One member from the group shall submit the file in PDF format.

Situation 1.
When you are sick, you should (see a doctor immediately to get a prescription medicine)
(use familiar home remedies like herbal medicines, lemon or green tea).

Dialogue
Person 1: *coughs* *sniffs*

Person 2: Are you okay? 

Person 1: Yes but it's just that I've been coughing for 2 weeks already.

Person 2: I’ll go to the doctor if I were you? 

Person 1: Do you really think I need to ask for a medical prescription for this flu to go away.
Are there any alternatives?

Person 2: We are not sure yet about what kind of sickness you have. It is right to go to the doctor
immediately so that they can give you the proper medicine to treat whatever illness it may be.

Person 1: I’ll take your advice and go to the doctor right away.
* 1 week later *
Person 2: Already better?

Person 1: Yes, thanks for the advice you gave me I already feel better and ready to play
basketball. you were right we need to seek help to the medical professionals because they were
the only one that can help us.

Situation 2.
When you are angry, it is better to (express yourself immediately) (contain your anger until
you feel calm).

Dialogue
*GUIDANCE OFFICE*

Councilor: Now that you are both here. Let us talk about your troubles and put an end to your
quarrels.

Councilor: Now, Student 1, can you speak first why did you talk behind your friends back. I
thought you two were friends.

Student 1: That was before she humiliated me!

Student 2: No I did not! I never talk behind her back! Never in my entire life!

Student 1: Yes you are!

Student 2: No I did not!

Councilor: Stop! Stop! Stop! Student 1, where did you hear your friend talk behind your back?

Student 1: At the cafeteria, I heard my name and then they started to laugh*sobs*. They were
making fun of me!

Student 2: No, we are not making fun of you, I think you got it all wrong we were just sharing
stories about how have fun time together.

Student 1: Then why did i hear my name? *sobs*

Student 2: I just shared a funny moment we had.

Councilor: Now that you understand each other… I hope that both of you can be friends again.

Situation 3
If you find a large insect in your kitchen, it is better to (take the insect outside) (use an
insecticide spray to kill the insect).

Dialogue
*Kitchen*

Child: Mom! Come here! There is an insect flying!

Mom: What do you want? What’s happening here?!

*Saw that her child was trying to kill the butterfly*

Mom: Dont hurt it.. It’s gentle, it wont hurt you.

Child: But it is inside our kitchen it might...

Mom: I’ll just open the windows  and fend it off the kitchen.

Situation 4
When you don’t know the answer to a question on a test, it is better to (guess) (think
carefully about what you do know and see if this knowledge can help you on the test).

Dialogue
*During a quiz*

Student: What is it again… Ughh I just can’t remember it… It’s on the tip of my tounge.
*breathes deeply*

*calms down*

Student: Lets analyze again the question and...

Ok so if this hormones is related to bones… That means it also related to our growth…

That's it!

Situation 5
When you need to discuss a problem with a business colleague, it is better to initiate
contact (in person) (through writing).
Dialogue

*Office*
Person 2: Its almost night time, we should continue this tomorrow.

Person 1: Alright I’ll just check the report first and then you can go.

Person 2: But, the deadline is on the next day. Can we continue this later through email?

Person 1: I don’t think that is a good idea because it is hard for us to explain each other sides
through the use of messages/ email, so instead of using email let us use Zoom or Google Meet.

Peron 2: Alright, see you later. 

*Virtual Meeting*

Person 1: I’m done reading your computation. I think there is an error in the 3rd page on column
4.

Person 2: Okay, I’ll fix it.

*After 3 hours of discussion*

*Finished with the report*
