History of Karnal

• One of the oldest districts of Haryana.

• It was founded by Karna from Mahabharata.

• Also called as city of karan.

• 1739 Nadir Shah defeated Muhammad Shah in battle of Karnal.

• Gajpat Singh (Jind) built a fort (Karnal fort)

• Which cause increase in the area of the city.

• After that Marathas captured it.

• Handed over to britishers

• Maded Cantonment church tower.

• British captured the fort and converted it into residence.

• Later it was used as jail.

• Education department take over it.

• And district school moved in it.

• The first prime minister of Pakistan Liaqat Ali was born in Karnal.

Historical places/monuments in karnal

Karna lake-
• It is the major tourist attraction in karnal.

• Karna used to bath in this lake.

• At this spot Karna gave away his protective armor to Indra.

• The city derives its name from Karna TAAL.


• Also the reason for karnal to be called as the city of Karna.

kalander Shah`s tomb-


• Situated just outside of the city.

• Built by by Ghia-Ud-Din in the memory of Qualander Shah.

• The well sculptured grave is made of marble.

• Emperor Alamgir built a mosque and a reservoir with fountains

Karnal fort-
• Constructed by Raja Gajpat singh in 1764.

• It is also called as Funnel hill.

• Now fort has been turned into an accommodation for official and
residential purposes.

Cantonment Church tower-


• Built in 1806 when british regiment set up in karnal.

• Tower has a height of 35 meters.

• Preserved as a landmark of cultural and historical heritage.

• It is an four storey building.

• The uppermost part reflects the Roman architectural style.

• As of today church tower is managed by the archaeological survey


of India in association with the all India Christian council.
Chhachhrauli fort-
• Kalsia kings built the fort to protect it from the external attacks of
the intruders.

• Served as a residential as well as the defense site for the famous


kalsias king

• Also get the glimps of the british-indo architecture.

• A gigantic clock tower was built using stone blocks.

• In past years two schools where set up in it.

Babur`s Mosque-
• Is the first mosque to have been built by emperor Babur on his visit to
the country.

• built after he defeated Ibrahim Lodhi .

• the mosque has been over time repaired and renovated in the honour of
the great king.

• the mosque have slendid work of mughal architecture.

Pukka Pul -
• also known as the Sayad’s Shrine.

• it is situated at a distance of 7 km from the district of Karnal.

• Devotees gather here to make offerings and move ahead towards good
in life leaving behind the bad.
• This tomb is also believed to have powers of sending away ghosts along
with curing ailments.

• A fair is also held at this tomb every Thursday during which lamps are
lit all over the place.

Alamgir Miran Sahib`s Tomb-


• The tomb is situated in the southern part of Karnal town.

• was built in the memory and honour of a saint Sayad Mohammed.

• Sayad Mohammed died in 899 AD while rescuing a Brahmin girl from


the custody of a Raja in a pitched battle.

• The premises of this tomb also have a small mosque .

Atal Park-
• located in sector 8 in karnal.

• it includes lake, open air gym,an exquisite lily pond,fountains and


playground.

• it manages to cater tothe needs of every age group.

• furnished with anti skid pathways.

• also famous for picnic spot.

Mughal bridge-
• The Mughal Bridge at Karnal was built during the reign of Shah Jahan.
• The bridge was laid out by Mughal Emperor Babur after his victory in
the first battle of Panipat.

• The Mughal Bridge is an architectural engineering example of Akbar


time.

• The bridge was used to facilitate travelers during the 17th Century.

• locally called as Badshahi Pul andThis bridge is also known as 'Old


Badshahi Bridge'.

• Its structurally sound bridge consisting of three arches made up of


stone.

• There are four domed shaped tops strengthened by buttresses and


arches on either sides.
