3. Language Features of Asking for and Giving Opinion and

Idea
a. Use of mental verb, foe example think, believe, doubt, feel,
assume, etc.
b. Use of expressions of asking for and giving an opinion and
idea, and the responses.
The following are expressions of asking for and giving an
opinion and idea.

Asking for Opinion and Idea Giving an Opinion and Idea

- What do you think of . . . ? - I think ( that )
- What do you think about . . . - I personally believe/ think/feel
? ....
- Do you think . . . ? - In my view . . . .
- What is your idea about . . . - As I see it, . . . .
? - According to me, . . . .
- Tell me what do you think! - As far as I'm concerned, .
- Do you have any idea? ...
- Well, if you ask me . . . .

We can accept af refuse the opinion. When refusing or

disagreeing an opinion, we should do it in a polite way. The folloeing
are the responses of giving opinion.

Agreeing an Opinion Disagreeing an Opinion

- I agree with your opinion

Example:
Ardi : I think smoking shoul be banned in this area. It's not good
for health.
Dian : I agree with you. It makes the visitors uncomfortable.
Lucky : I'm sorry but I don't agree with you. They smoke
because they are bored here.

Giving opinion is usually needed in formal situations, such as

contributing ideas to a meeting, speaking at a neighbourhood
association meeting, or taking part in debate. It is also needed in
informal situation, such as talking with friends or telling someone about
something.
Most people give opinion with the following structure.

1. Say what they think

2. Giving a reason for their opinion/ idea
3. Give an example
4. Restate or repeat their opinion

Look at the following structure!

I think there are too much drama series on What I think ( opinion
television, I would rather have more variety )
shows
Not at all drama series are good. Some of Reason
them are not suitable for kids, but some kids
like the drama series, too
Yesterday, I went to my friend's house. Her Example
five-year-old brother was watching drama
series.
I really think most of television Repeat Opinion
programs are drama series.
