the power of the state. Nation-building aims at the unification of the people within the
state so that it remains politically stable and viable in the long run. With that, I firmly
believe that Colonial Period has contributed more in our nation building. Colonial
period includes the colonization of Spaniards as well as Americans. During the Spanish
Era, they introduced Catholicism and reorganization of the Barrios. Its goal is to spread
their teachings and dogma which brought us together. They also introduced Spanish
language which greatly influenced Filipino language. For example, the words “lugar”,
“basura”, “plato” are actually tagalog words with the same meaning in Spanish. On the
other hand, during American colonization, they brought in the Philippines the English
Language. With that, Philippines has been recognized as one of the largest English-
speaking nations with majority of its population having at least some degree of fluency
in the language. In addition, English has always been one of the official languages of
the Philippines and is spoken by more than 14 million Filipinos. Supported by these
evidences, Colonial period has greatly impacted our nation-building. This period was
able to bind and unite us together. It also contributed in structuring a national identity.
