Part 3

Read the text below and answer questions 17 – 24.

When tea was first imported and distributed, it was done so in tins. This meant
that tea could be kept stored at the proper temperature in a cool environment, but
it was also expensive. This meant only the rich could afford to drink tea due to its
high distribution cost.
Thomas Sullivan changed all that in 1908. He was a tea importer based in
New York City. As tea was becoming more popular in America, he has to think of
another way to send the tea to his customers.
So, he came up with the idea of using tea bags, which was actually just a silk pouch with a
small amount of tea inside. This meant he could send the tea to his customers, without having to
waste money on tins and mailing costs.
His customers were amazed with Sullivan’s ingenious idea. They thought that the pouches
were designed to go straight into the tea pot. So, they put the bags into the pot and poured hot
water over them. It worked and the tea bags were born. Looked like Sullivan’s customers were
even cleverer than he was.

Read the text below and answer questions 25 to 34.

THE ORIGIN OF HAMBURGER

Originally, hamburger meant only ‘a fresh cooked or broiled meatball,
ground meat steak or patty of meat served warm’. The secondary meaning,
‘a sandwich, patty in circular or square form between two bun halves’ came
into being in America.
The word ‘hamburger’ comes from the seaport city – Hamburg in
Germany. During the time of American settlement, a lot of European
immigrants moved to the New World. At that time, the port of Hamburg
meant the last piece of European soil immigrants felt under their feet before
their voyage to the unknown. Hamburger was a food European immigrant
often ate on boats of the Hamburg-America Line.
It has been recorded that there was a shortage of woman at that time. So, ordering a
hamburger, which was usually served by a female, was one way the men could get in touch with
the female.
Today, one can easily order a hamburger anywhere. It is eaten by people of all races and
across the globe. It has its nutritional value though nutritionists are against it. One reason why
hamburger is so popular in the fast-pace society today is that it is a meal that can be picked up
easily during short lunch breaks.
