1. Define
i. Rectification

- Converts the AC sine wave into a pulsating DC wave. There


are several forms of rectifiers used but all are made up of
diodes.

ii. Ripple factor

- Figure of merit (number used for comparison) for power supplies.

2. Give two classifications of rectification. Briefly explain both of them.


- FULL WAVE RECTIFICATION
• Converts both polarities of the input waveform to pulsating
DC, and yields a higher average output voltage.
• Negative components are inverted.
- HALF WAVE RECTIFICATION
• Only one half of the input waveform reaches the
output voltage is lower.
• Negative components of sine wave are discarded.

3. Sketch the output voltage versus time graphs for the rectification in Question 2.

4. Figure 1 shows the graphs of output voltage versus time produced by two different type of
power supply. Construct and label the appropriate circuit diagrams of power supplies
which produce the output voltage shown by the figure below.
