Review on Solid Mechanics:

Fundamental concepts of Solid Mechanics

The individual phases of a material (i.e., the individual fibre
and matrix) are considered to be continua, and the composite is
also considered to be continuum
Concept of Tensors
Tensors are physical entities whose components are the
coefficients of a linear relationship between vectors.

Levels of observation and the importance of different

Scales of Analysis for Composite Material
• Composite Materials need to be
understood at different scales of
measurement.
• Micro mechanics: Study of composite
materials by understanding interaction
between constituent materials on a
microscopic scale.
i Such an approach helps one
theoretically compute material
properties and failure mechanisms of
composites.
ii Such an approach is difficult to use for
large structures because of
computational limitations.
