The incising factor Ci is equal to 0.80 for Fb from Table 4.3.8 [1]. Now, all adjustment factors have been determined from Table
4.3.1 [1]. Therefore, the adjusted bending design value (F'b) can be calculated.

Formula 13

F'b   =  Fb   ⋅  CD   ⋅  CM   ⋅  Ct   ⋅  CL   ⋅  CF   ⋅  Cfu   ⋅  Ci   ⋅  Cr

F'b   =  1192. 32  psi

Beam Design Ratio

The ultimate goal of this example is to obtain the design ratio for this simple beam. This will determine if the member size is
adequate under the given load or if it should be further optimized. Calculating the design ratio requires the maximum bending
moment and actual bending stress.

The maximum moment about the x-axis (Mmax) is found by the following.

Formula 14

P ⋅ L
Mmax   =     =  9, 375  lb   ⋅   ft

Next, the actual bending stress (fb) is calculated by plugging in Mmax and S from previous calculations. This can be seen
below utilizing Sect. 3.3.2.1 [1].

Formula 15

Mmax 1 ft.
fb   =     =     =  1, 098. 63  psi

S 102.40  in.

Finally, the design ratio (η) per Sect. 3.3.1 can now be calculated.
