There are some perscopes missing on the turret,
seven tobe exact. The commander's main periscope
under the cupola searchlight is simulated with a
periscope from the serap box cut to size. The other
‘ones forthe smaller openings around the eomaman:
ers cupola and the gunners periscope are just
pieces of clear plastic cut to size. I didnt have any
proper periscopes to ft in those teeny openings. 1
also cut out a elliptical piece of clear plastic and

the main gun. The clear parts are actually added
after painting along wth the small antenna infront
of the commander's cupola, which Is made from
stretched sprue

Paint and weathering
It's time to slap some paint on this
poppy and throw it on the shelf For
painting keep the turret, hls skirt.

The wash and filter effects are all
done with, artist's oll. paints and

[Lakas Beige, burt umber, yellow ochre

Dts of burnt umber, yellow ochre
and Lukas Belge are used a 2 filter:
Naples yellow and Lukas Warm Grey are

Building the interior

of a triangular fle Cyberhobby supplies a wel
etal gun barrel and breechblock to whieh some
bolts are added with a punch and die, Before can
start with the interior I have to detail the inside and
outside of fighting compartment by adding weld
‘seams ard east texture on the steel plates, Weld
‘Seams are added with stretched sprue, Sections of
sprue are added and wien dry they are softened by
applying Humbrol cement. When the plastic is soft
enough
the weld. seam is
sculpted with a sharp, pointe nif.
The next step is applying cast texture on the
metal plates. Combining two techniques accom:
plishes this. In the frst technique Humbrol gue is
applied onthe plates to achieve the cast finish. The
Humbrol give is allowed to dry fora few seconds and
softens the upper layer of plastic. then use a sit
brush and make tapping movements onthe softened
paste plate, I is important todo this in small area
‘atone time to control the progress. It can be repeat

appear However, itis important not to overdo this
elfect. To finish this proces, a motor tol with den-
tal burr is gently hit on the plastic to cause very
small gouges inthe plastic. Aer Iam satisfied with
the texture, [use a fine rylon brush in the motor
‘ool to remove any small particles from the vehicle.
With the hull parts ready it's time to move on to
the interior, which wil be almost completely made of
photoetch. Unfortunately 1 soon realize that the
Grifon interior set isnot a complete interior, but
nothing more than a View through the hate set All
the major pars are there, but the significant details

Building the exterior
Building the exterior almost goes completely
according to plan. The first thing to do is to mount
the fenders. At first glance, the Griff fenders
appear to ft OK, but they do not. Biter the fenders
are too long, or the engine deck is too short
Shortening the fenders is not an option because
then they don fit wel enough to the rear plate of
the vehicle. The only option is to lengthen the
engine deck by 5 mm. This is done with Evergreen
plastic stip. The fenders are mounted and now
‘etalling the exterior can stat. Photoeteh metal
fenders have an advantage ver plastic ones, as they
are thinner and sturdier. Aer checking several pic
tures on the Internet, With the ado par of weez-
ers and a pair of pliers, I decide to gve the front
fenders rather heavy damage. Some small parts are

The Brummbat’s suspension isa heavy task to
accomplish. The original Panzer TV chassis was not
designed for so much weight and the first
Brummbar sank through its front wheels. To create
the ilusion of an overstresed front chassis, some
changes are made tothe Kt suspension and lower
hl. The suspension consists of four subassemblies
on both sides and I need to place both front ones
about two millimeters higher than the normal posi-
tion. start with removing the location pins forthe
front bogies. The two rear boges are then glued
tcconding to the instructions and when dry the
other four bogies are glued onthe corect postions

Adding contrast with an airbrush means ¥ have to

building, the weathering process. To create more

between the extremes; a sort of reluctant accept-

T begin to tackle this piece by doing a lite
research. Tm able to get a loaned copy of Nats &
Bolts #10, which basa fantastic setion onthe towed
version siG 38 gun including dozens of wartime pho-
tos and surviving museum pieces. Te Nuts & Bolts
series i a litle pricey, but excellent nonetheless.

assemblies are quite complex and contain some
very small and delicate pars. Once together these
sub asemblis are quite fragile as most ofthe joints
contain just single pin. I remove the two rubber
tired wheels for the vehicle drawn version and clean
up the small mold seam on the tread, I finish by
ang the outer hab chain tie down point (part D7),
and the inner brake subassembly. These are lef 0
fully cure overnight. With both wheel subassemblies
complete and fly cured, I add the traverse axe
(part C15) to the right wheel assembly. Checking
algment careful, again place it aside overnight

T start everything off by priming all the sub
assembles in Gunze Mi. Surfcer 1200, This stuff is
‘reat, but canbe hard to find, not to mention expen
sive To make my can last as long as posible, sin
ply mist on a couple thin coats. One this has dried
‘vernight, | start painting. To begin, I shoot the rub
ber tires with Tamiya NATO Black, XF-60, this pro
vides a nice worn rubber look right out ofthe bottle,
also shoot the traverse axle and elevation pistons
with Tamiya Titanium Silver, X22, These are set
aside and I move onto the base coal. For my panzer
Grey base coat, mixup a batch of Tamiya German,
Gres, XP.63 and Medium Biue, XP-18 thinned with
‘Tamiya lacquer thinner to the consistency of milk. I
load this into my trusty Harder Steinbeck Infinity
airbrush, With this initial coat laid down Tadd a
slighty lighter coat of the same mistur with afew
drops of Tamiya Light Gre, XF-6. This lightening
process repeated once more, making sue 0 ran
‘domly apply these colors. The gun, cartage andl
‘wheels all receive this same treatment. T pant the
‘wheels simply useacrcle template to mask off the
pre-painted rubber tires and shoot the panzer Gre

‘guns were horse of vehicle drawn, they no doubt
recelved a lot of punishment—from the environ
ment andthe erew combined. While I don’t want to
completely trash te gun, Ido want to impart a sig.

Anyway, using Migs Dark Wash mixed with a
little Brown Wash, Ieareflly apply a pin wash tothe

artillery rounds provided in the kit AFV Club pro
vides thee different types of rounds: three each of
HE and smoke, and one Stilgranate 42 project
Cartridges are’ provided for the HE and Smoke

{ridges even have detail on the base and on the
insides to depict either aired or unre eatriige—
wow! The decals include shell stenelling for each

rings. The cartridge bows have separate Tids to
depict the box open with cartridges inside. Painting
the cartridge cases Is accomplished with Testors
‘Model Master bright bras. A light coat of Mig dark

remaining mixture of Mig neutral and dark wash to

this Is dy a few seratches are added with a fine
brush. The Stielranate 42 projectile is plnted next

loaded so thatthe finned projectile remains outside
ofthe barel entirely and was fired using a special
charge loaded inthe breech. The effective range of
the projectile was about 1,00 meters (1,100 yd)
This round, unlike other Stelgranaten, was not
intended for anti-tank use, but rather for the
destroving fortified postions, or clearing barbed:

‘The Nuts & Bolts book has several photos of a
surviving shell and iustrate itn a darker green. I
use Tamiya black green forte inital coat follow
this with one more coat slightly lightened with
Tania at white. Once dry, Lappy the steneiling to
the round and give it the same wash as the other
shells With that done, the gun is done!

and rests ina “best of breed” among 38 gun kits
