here is concern being expressed in the UK over the safety of ‘smart’ motorways
featuring all-lane running. The AA motoring body has been particularly vocal in its
criticism of smart motorways.
The idea of smart motorways is simple and has developed from a number of
basic facts. Modern vehicles are more reliable than those of previous decades and
breakdowns are far less common than in the past. And vehicle numbers and traffic
are growing so congestion needs to be addressed. But there is restricted funding
available to build new highway lanes and proposed widening projects also face greater
environmental hurdles.

As yet, the UK is the only European country World Highways Magazine
to fully roll out a programme of converting hard
shoulders to live traffic lanes on major motorway routes where there is insufficient capacity. But other
European countries are evaluating the concept and trials are underway. Germany’s A9 Autobahn connects
Munich and Nuremburg and now features all-lane running, without a hard shoulder and using overhead
gantry warning systems for drivers.
For safety, emergency refuge points for stricken vehicles are spaced 2.5km apart on the UK’s smart
motorways. Data released by Highways England shows that casualty rates are 25% lower on smart
motorways than on motorways featuring a hard shoulder.
However, the AA’s recently published report says that more than 50% of UK drivers do not like smart
motorways. The AA’s report was based on input from 15,000 drivers. And just 10% of drivers polled say
that they are satisfied with the smart motorway system. Based on its poll and the experience of its in-house
traffic experts, the AA believes that there are safety issues to be dealt with.
There have indeed been fatalities on routes that have already been converted to smart motorways. And
the AA says its data shows that the removal of a hard shoulder increases risks for vehicle occupants using
these routes. According to data sourced by the AA, 19,316 motorists experienced a breakdown in a live
traffic lane of a smart motorway during 2017 and 2018. This data has been confirmed as being accurate by
Highways England. Edmund King, the AA’s president has called for an independent review of the safety of
existing smart motorway schemes before any more routes are converted.
There are three categories of smart motorway: controlled motorway; dynamic hard shoulder; all-lane
running. This last is the most controversial.
According to the AA’s report, 70% of drivers polled believe smart motorway sections featuring all-lane
running present greater safety hazards than those stretches with a continuous hard shoulder.
Of concern too is that Highways England has confirmed that 71% of stops made in emergency refuge
areas were not emergencies. This makes it clear that in some instances, drivers facing an emergency may
not be able to access an emergency refuge due to the presence of another parked vehicle.
Cutting congestion is crucial but public safety has a higher priority. And the AA is calling for a safety
review of existing smart motorway schemes.

New Congo River

Noire in the Republic of Congo.

Georgia DOT & Parsons win top ITS award
With Atlanta’s traffic congestion among
the worst in the US, the Georgia DOT
(GDOT) implemented the State’s first two
Reversible Express Lanes Projects on the
I-75 South Metro and Northwest Corridor
roadways.
The projects were completed in January
2017 and September 2018 by GDOT and the
Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority
(SRTA).
The I-75 South Metro Express Lanes are
newly constructed reversible toll lanes that run
19km along I-75 and operate northbound in the
morning toward Atlanta and southbound in the
evening. The Northwest Corridor Express Lanes
project adds 47.5km of express lanes. The new
highway infrastructure includes reversible toll
lanes, seven express lane interchanges, three
access points, and 40 bridges. The express lanes
are designed to improve traffic flow, increase
commuter options, provide reliable trip times,
and bring economic benefits to the region.
Parsons was involved in all project aspects
including civil design, Intelligent Transportation
Systems, and Traffic Incident Management
for the reuse and extension of the company’s
previously installed Advanced Transportation
Management System (ATMS) iNET. Parsons
was the lead designer for this extensive civil
engineering project and the team continues to
support the operation and technology to ensure
GDOT’s success in the operation, management,
and maintenance of this critical traffic asset.

Private sector lays out the way

for improving road safety
Top level executives from Total, Michelin,
3M, Volvo and UPS were part of the
panel “Improving Road Safety Outcomes:
Private Sector Commitments” hosted in
the framework of the annual SuM4All
consortium meeting held at the World
Bank Headquarters in Washington DC.
Coordinated by IRF (Geneva), the panel aimed at
illustrating areas of opportunity where companies
can make meaningful contributions to road
safety outcomes and inspire further action and
commitment in the sector.
“We need to learn to better harness the power
of corporate resources and their presence in our
communities” said IRF resident Bill M Halkias in
his introductory remarks. The Decade of Action
has taught us that saving five million lives and
avoiding 50 million serious injuries will require
more significant commitments and greater action
from everyone. "If effectively engaged, the private
sector is well placed to have a profound and
positive impact on road safety," Halkias stressed.
“It is important to understand how private
companies integrate road safety into their overall
sustainability efforts and which are the most
effective strategies they apply to do so."
Dan Chen, vice president and general
manager of 3M’s Transportation Safety Division,
mentioned that 3M’s road safety efforts are
structured around the four familiar E’s: Education,
Engineering, Enforcement and Emergency
responses. “We spend quite a bit of effort on
improvement of our drivers of fleet vehicles
globally. Many of our 90,000 employees are
in field operations. Importantly, we link driver
behavior to the 3M Code of Conduct and our
safety culture." 3M places significant focus
on safety internally but also as a technology
company, equally developing solutions for
roadway users that reduce fatalities.
For many private sector actors road safety is
far more than just a risk that can severely impact
business, but instead it is a value and a key pillar
of a vision that sees companies fully engaged in
this activity with their employees and with the
communities. “Safety is a core value at UPS,” said
Joanna Cornell, vice president Health and Safety.
UPS places a strong emphasis on community
safety and acts upon this by providing extensive
trainings to its drivers, as well as delivering
life-sustaining relief and recovery supplies to
communities.
Contributing to the panel discussion, Peter
Kronberg, safety director, Volvo, further stated
that “traffic safety for us is not a CSR issue. It is
core business” and importantly highlighted the
varying contextual needs with regard to safer

mobility: “Towards Zero” in mature countries
and “Bending the Curve” in LMIC. Whilst
mentioning how the private sector’s innovation
and leadership can be instrumental for facilitating
transformational change, he still mentioned that
the importance of the regulatory side should not
be underestimated.
This session demonstrated that by harnessing
the power of corporate resources and presence
in our communities, the improvements in road
safety driven by the private sector can extend
well beyond CSR initiatives and company fleet
operations. Exemplifying this, Benoît Luc, senior
vice president Europe of Marketing and Services,
Total, illustrated how SafeWay RightWay, born
of a partnership with the World Bank, made it
possible to deliver partnerships between private
companies to carry out joint actions which
come under the sharing of best practice, pooling
resources for activities such as training, whilst
also raising awareness of vulnerable road users
for example. Some of these activities thus easily
deliver not only on road safety, but on a number
of other SDGs targets.

events. A main challenge for transport managers
and authorities in the new decade is to make
infrastructure more resilient.
In general, there has been a growing demand
to improve resilience of critical engineering
assets. Road and railway networks contain
particularly sensitive elements that are extremely
fragile when facing unanticipated and extreme
events.
Such events represent a global challenge
because they can affect people’s safety. The
economic impact is also considerable, causing
major financial losses every year. It is, therefore,
necessary to promote mobility protocols.
FORESEE objectives
• Updating of methodologies for event
modelling, adaptive solutions and
cost-benefit analyses;
• Development of situational awareness
systems based on best available data
supported by GIS/BIM mapping
technologies;
• Promotion of innovative technologies:
permeable pavements, slope stabilisation
systems, as well as drainage and culvert links;
• Development of guidelines for design,
construction, operation and maintenance
of infrastructure to withstand extreme
events in the short-, medium- and long-term;
• Build governance elements to facilitate a
holistic management throughout the entire
life cycle of infrastructure.
However, the problem is to identify when
these extreme events will occur, under what
circumstance and with what consequences, so
that transport authorities are able to keep assets
operating safely.
Even at an international level, the United
Nations has dedicated special attention to this
problem in its Sustainable Development Goals.*.
Goal 11 (of the 17 goals) calls on building a more
resilient infrastructure, stressing that investment
is crucial to achieve sustainable development and
to empower community growth.
At the European Union level, the European

Commission recently identified the introduction
of resilience schemes and tools into different
infrastructure management processes as a
priority in the research agenda for the coming
years. Several studies and projects to develop
methodologies and technologies are in the works,
but this is still overall at a very early stage. New
solutions should provide added value to the users.
Infrastructure managers and operators will be
offered reliable data and guidance for decision-
making under emergency situations.
Contributing to this strategy, the EU is funding
the FORESEE research project. It will develop
a methodology – along with a corresponding
toolkit - to assist authorities and infrastructure
operators in the improvement of road and rail
asset management protocols.
FORESEE considers events caused by nature
such as extreme weather, mainly flooding and
heavy rainfalls, snow and wind, as well as
landslides and earthquakes. Also considered are
man-made hazards - intentional and accidental.
The research will address the impact on bridges,
tunnels, pavement, slopes and terminals. It will
also examine the effects on the freight system -
road, rail, multimodal and transport hubs.
In addition, the FORESEE research
will specifically study the psychological and
behavioural dimensions of safety from the
perspective of transport users. Despite the large
amount of research already available in this field,
further analysis is necessary on risk-perception
and decision-making in a way that can capture
non-rational, automatic and emotional influences
during critical situations.
The consortium will validate research
covering six European infrastructure assets. This
will include tunnels with seismic risks along
Italy’s Carsoli-Torano Highway and bridges under
adverse weather conditions on the Naples–Bari

highway. In Spain, data will be examined along
high viaducts such as Montabliz – the country’s
highest bridge - and along urban ring-roads in
big cities, including Madrid. Also to be considered
will be high-speed German railways threatened
by floods and multimodal rail and road bridges in
Portugal, such as the 25th April Bridge in Lisbon.
The multidisciplinary team of 18 partners
will be assisted by a ‘Stakeholder Reference
Group’ that will facilitate the development of the
project to deliver the toolkit in 2022. Infrastructure
managers and operators will be actively involved
in the research.

P
rojects within a project is how best to describe the widening of six bridges
along France’s A85. The four-year timescale for completing six viaducts
went smoothly, thanks to the application of Building Information Modelling.
This was especially true for pier construction where formwork specialist
Doka employed their own BIM management system that dovetails into the
clients' BIM system.
The A85 motorway is one of the main thoroughfares connecting the
French cities of Anger, population 155,000, and Vierzon, population of
around 27,000. The 270km-long autoroute in north-western France opened in sections starting in
1997 and ending in 2007. It connects the A11 at Angers to the A71 at Vierzon.
In 2007, the 26km Bourgueil to Langeais section – which incorporates the Viaduc de la Roumer
- was opened. But unlike other sections of the A85, the viaducts along this section were only two-
lane and not four – a single lane in each direction. These two-lane sections needed to be widened
to accommodate the growing volume of traffic. This widening was accomplished by constructing
another separate two-lane bridge closely parallel to the existing bridge.
In all, the six parallel bridges have been built for A85 concessionaire Vinci Autoroutes between
Angers and Vierzon in the Langeais region. All of the bridges are different in size and length, thanks
to the rivers that they cross (see box).
As with the other five bridges, the new expanded Viaduc de la Roumer ensures a faster
connection between the two towns. It also increases the safety of motorists in the event of crashes
by allowing for more traffic lanes to be open. As well, highway crews now have more – and safer -
traffic management options for carrying out maintenance and repairs.
According to Vinci Autoroutes, another objective for the widening programme is not to simply
allow for more traffic – the main highway is already mostly four-lane – but to relieve congestion
around bridges. This in turn will remove emissions and noise pollution from the local environment.
This environmental aspect is particularly important in a highly visited region.
The small Roumer River meanders for around 27km before emptying into the larger Loire River
whose world-renowned chateaux are a tourist magnet. The Roumer itself adds to the region’s
attractions by creating an idyllic and environmentally diverse valley that cradles many historic and

allows for a high degree of planning and control
over construction traffic movements.
An important contribution to the Roumer
infrastructure project was made by the French
division of global formwork specialist Doka, an
Umdasch Group company with a workforce of
more than 6,700 people in around 70 countries.
Doka used BIM to deliver an efficient and easily
adaptable formwork solution for widening the
Viaduc de la Roumer, according to the company.
BIM also allowed for much less disruption to the
surrounding environment during construction.
Tight spaces
The Viaduc de la Roumer is 249m long and
80m wide. The tallest of its three piers is 20m.
Since the project is built in the middle of a forest
area, the topography and close proximity to the
existing bridge dictate that the construction work
be done in very tight quarters. One of the client’s
most important requirements was to achieve a
well-balanced appearance. To that end, client
instructions were for Doka to match the shape
and concrete surfaces of the new piers and pier
heads with the look of the existing piers.
In the process of constructing the piers,
the advantages of the framed Doka formwork

Framax Xlife became apparent very early on
in the work, notes the manufacturer. Compact
repositioning units significantly reduce the need
for cranes on the site. The high-quality Xlife
sheet and the galvanised and powder-coated
steel frames ensured a clean and level concrete
finish.
It took 10 days for each casting section
to be completed. For building the pier heads,
Doka combined the Framax Xlife system with
the large-area formwork Top 50 and supporting
construction frames. In this way it delivered a
precisely fitting formwork solution for the design.
To keep the onsite assembly work to a
minimum, the panels of the large-area formwork
were preassembled by the Doka Ready-to-
Use Service and delivered to the site ready for
immediate use. This allowed the contractor to
fully concentrate on executing the construction
work.
The cycle time for each casting section
of the pier heads was between two and three
weeks. A total of 2,600m³ of concrete and
390tonnes of reinforcement were used for the
piers and pier heads. The abutments on both
ends of the bridge were poured using the framed
formwork Framax Xlife.

tasks. Preassembled folding working platforms
with integrated side railings are mounted to
the framed formwork horizontally and can be
repositioned simultaneously with the system.
Integrated ladders and manholes also ensure a
high level of workplace safety.
Optimised management
All of the project planning was done with the
help of BIM. In this way any information is
coordinated during all phases of the project
life cycle. BIM not only creates a uniform
understanding of the project among all project
participants, it also allows for transparent
exchange of knowledge in real time, collision
tests of the individual trades and the optimised
construction site management.
Originally, formwork planning took place
in AutoCAD 2D and was then mapped in BIM.
Doka used the construction model of project
owner NGE GC as a starting point and modelled
a digital twin with the data pertaining to the
structure. The advantage is that formwork
jobs could be simulated virtually on the model
even before piers, pier heads and abutments
were visible in concrete. This process allowed
for optimisation of the formwork solution
even before construction. It also provided the
opportunity to early on discover and eliminate
inconsistencies.

The finished model was made available to
the client as a file in IFC format. This way the
client was able to fully exploit the advantages
of BIM planning such as process simulation.
Another benefit was the client’s ability to access
information about all data regarding individual
formwork systems and components including
article numbers, article descriptions, weight and
more.
During the planning phase, Doka’s engineers
focussed especially on mapping all 20 of the
individual casting sections. The client, in its
BIM coordination software, has the option of
displaying exactly the time when particular
systems and components are used, as well as
the quantities used in each section.
“Quite clearly, the important benefit lies with
process design and process simulation,” says
Gerhard Schindler, BIM project coordinator at
Doka. “This means the client can time the use
of formwork systems perfectly. So, not only is
onsite management of construction optimised,
the process also ensures fast and smooth
construction progress.”

With the 3D model, the client can simulate
the construction process in the digital twin.

personnel must be coordinated perfectly to
ensure that construction progresses smoothly.
This was an important aspect when the pier
heads were formed as space was a precious
commodity.
BIM allows for quick and easy so-called
“collision tests” of the individual trades groups
coming on site to map their interactions and
timescales. It was crucial to see exactly how
the formwork tasks could be performed next
to the existing bridge without having to make
complicated modifications in the course of the
construction work.
Another significant step toward safer and
more efficient construction sites is to visualise
construction processes. The virtual twin of the
construction model was rendered to create a
real sense of being on the construction site. The
result is that the client and site crew can move
freely throughout the formwork model. The goal
is to create a comprehensive overview of the
site which will help workers establish a better
understanding of the construction process.
The model can be distributed as an executable
application or web-based version via link.

with the Viaduc de la Roumer project. “We are
particularly happy that we are able to support

our customer in this project with a 3D model,
an ingenious formwork solution and a video
of a flight from every angle of the site,” says
Bodin Louis-Gonzague, head of engineering
at Doka’s office in the French city of Nantes.
“This way we can significantly contribute to
improved construction site management and
safe planning.”
After completion of the piers, the deck
girders were assembled and launched across
the piers. Work then started on assembling the
deck slab of reinforced concrete to sit atop the
girders. The contractor was Eurovia Béton, a
joint venture with ETPO (consisting of Eurovia
Béton and Eurovia Tours) along with Baudin
Châteauneuf, a private contractor with its head
office in the nearby Loire River Valley region. In
all, 17 prefabricated slab segments form part of
the deck slab. The slabs were craned into place
and the crane later used for other duties along
the bridge.
Construction work began in earnest in
April 2018. Completion of the piers, pier heads
and abutments was in mid-2019, followed
by construction of the deck. The Viaduc de la
Roumer is scheduled to open for traffic officially

UK highways contractor WJ Group has
purchased a second robot line pre-marker
to help complete more of its work for
Highways England.
The pre-marker is from Danish
manufacturer TinyMobileRobots which
makes three types of its TinyMobileRobot
platform – a pre-marker, a line marker and
a surveyor.
By completing roadworks faster, the
robot helps reduce traffic congestion and
the cost savings can be put towards more

The 19km Huntingdon Southern
Bypass, which makes up around two-thirds
of the A14 upgrade, opened a year early, in

Bartco says that its Dynamic Works Egress
Safety Solution from MVIS enables traffic
management companies to better protect
road users and construction workers.
Dynamic Works combines modular
electronic perimeters and variable message
signs (VMS) to promote the safety of both
construction personnel and road users around
the exit points of roadside work zones via
dynamic text.
MVIS says that the solution targets both
highways and work zone traffic, offering a
superior alternative to the standard fixed-
plate signs and fixed message VMS used to
communicate only with highways traffic.
A pair of sensors are located at the
beginning of the acceleration zone within the
works area. They connect to an HD Compact
VMS deployed within the zone. When triggered
by an approaching works vehicle, the VMS
message changes from “wait here” to “merge
when safe”.
The sensors also connect to a roadside,
traffic-facing VMS-A, and warn highways road
users of the imminent arrival of a works vehicle
joining the carriageway. In the event of an
emergency, the VMS “works traffic merging”
message can be overridden with an alternative
message.
After a set time, the HD Compact VMS
reverts to its “wait here” message and the
VMS-A goes blank to allow traffic to flow freely

activation is recorded and can be reviewed for
audit purposes.
The Dynamic Works Egress Safety Solution
is joined in MVIS’ new product portfolio by
the Overhead Service Unit, which promotes
the safety of highways construction personnel
by warning them of overhead structures -
including those where work is underway. MVIS
claims that this is the first to feature in-built
radar as opposed to separate sensors, which
can accidently reposition after installation.
The easily installed solution uses an inbuilt
radar to activate an HD Compact VMS message
when a vehicle is detected approaching the
structure. This removes the risk of accidental
repositioning while at the same time minimises
the equipment required.
The HD Compact features high-visibility
chevrons to ensure that it is easily spotted by
construction workers.
Both the Dynamic Works Egress Safety
Solution and the Overhead Service Unit are in
use on a major UK smart motorway scheme,
said Graeme Lee, sales manager for MVIS. The
products were developed and manufactured by

announced the installation of its 400,000th
Durakerb unit in the UK.
Durakerb manufactures lightweight
recycled products and systems that the
company says provides for a safer, greener,
faster and easier solution to kerbing and
kerb-side/surface drainage.
A Durakerb unit is made from 88%
recycled polymer - the equivalent of 182
plastic bottles, according to the company.
The interlocking design of Durakerb units
allows for 100% alignment wherever they
are installed. The units can be cut with
hand tools and no additional training is
required, saving the equivalent of 9,000
manual labour days.
The units are also fully circular
products – they can be recycled and
remade at the end of their lifespan.
Over the past 11 years, the company
has saved thousands of tonnes of plastic
waste going to landfill, equivalent to 72
million plastic bottles, said Phil Sutton,
managing director of Econpro. “With a
renewed focus on plastic waste looking for
sustainable markets, we believe further
adoption of recycled polymer kerbing
solutions can offer a viable outlet for
thousands of tonnes of waste plastics in
the UK every year.”

Wintersense
Campbell Scientific, a US
environmental measurement
solutions provider, has secured the
global rights to Wintersense, a
temperature sensor and data display
system for highways.
Wintersense, developed by
meteorologists at the UK’s University
of Birmingham, is for temperature
monitoring of roads, bridges, cycle
lanes and car parks. It is easy to deploy
as a stand-alone, fully integrated
non-invasive smart sensor package,
according to Campbell Scientific.
Existing routes often use main
outstations spaced many kilometres
apart and mobile measurement
sensors that give only a snapshot of a
route’s temperature over time.
However, Wintersense data is
available 24/7 and isn’t reliant on

Finnish firm ALLU is offering an expanded
range of hydraulic attachments, with
existing models also benefiting from major
improvements.
The versatile units can be used with an array
of carriers such as excavators, wheeled loaders
and skid steers. The firm says that its products
offer a one-stop shop for screening, crushing,
aerating, mixing and loading operations. The
firm says that this also helps boost profitability
as less material goes to landfill, lowering
haulage costs and landfill fees. The reuse of
material on site also means that there is no
need to purchase virgin material due to the
recycling leftover materials.
The company says that its Transformer
range now offers improved performance. The
DL 2-09 features 8mm TS blades (the thinnest
blade model) , while the DH 3-17 uses 16/32 TS
blades, the DH 4-17 uses 25/50 TS blades and
the top-of-the-range M 3-20 uses 50mm TS
blades.
The company says that its innovative TS
blade structure is a modern development for

continuous asphalt plant offers high-quality
production. Designed to meet the needs of
the North American market, the ContiHRT is
capable of producing high-quality mix with
more than 60% recycled asphalt (RAP). The
new plant features Ammann’s novel recycling
technology, already proven worldwide, which
maximises RAP utilisation and meets the
world’s most stringent emissions guidelines.
The gentle pre-heating of the RAP, compared
to traditional cold feed to superheated virgin
aggregates, prevents thermal stress on the
asphalt concrete (AC) content and ensures a
highly homogenous final mix. That process
also minimises fuel burn and reduces the levels
of CO2 and other pollutants.
The plant incorporates a RAP dryer for the
addition of recycled materials and a separate
cold recycling feed. The plant is capable

30%; or a combination of the two. The ACP

of cold milling solutions with
the introduction of its new
generation of large milling
machines. The firm says that
its high-performance W 250 Fi
and W 220 Fi models offer a
combination of finish quality and
productivity. Reliability, durability
and lower maintenance needs are
also features of these machines.
Versatility has been increased over
earlier generation units too, with

Hydraulic hybrid excavator

Volvo CE claims that its novel EC300E
Hybrid excavator offers high efficiency
and reliability. The basis is a simple process
of recirculating energy from the boom-
down motion. This uses simple and proven
hydraulic hybrid technology, rather than
the more costly systems to recover electrical
energy from the swing cycle used on some
hybrid excavators.
The powerful boom-down motion
charges 20litre capacity hydraulic
accumulators, which then recirculate this
energy to drive hydraulic assist motors and
help to power the hydraulic pump. There
are the same levels of controllability and
performance as for the standard EC300E,
including the ability to work in ECO Mode
and Hybrid Mode simultaneously.

According to Volvo CE, this system
allows fuel savings of up to 15% and
12% lower CO2 emissions than from a
conventional machine.
The package reduces the load on the

90° swing, the fuel saving payback is
approximately two years but with no loss of
performance. It is also comparatively simple
to maintain and service and inexpensive as
the system consists of just a few add-on
components.
At the moment, the package is not

Drying road surfaces
South Carolina-based Road Dryer
says that its truck- or trailer-
mounted Road Dryer RD-1200XT
can speed drying of asphalt and
concrete pavement. The firm says
that this allows crews to pave
or apply surface treatments or
striping after just one pass. The
unit, which blows heated air
up to 204°C directly downward
through multiple nozzles,
eliminates the risk of flying
objects, and allows traffic to flow
in nearby lanes.
The Road Dryer unit can be
adjusted for drying widths 2.4-
3.7m. Because it dries pavement
on demand, it provides flexibility
for contractors and government
agencies to meet timetables
by minimising delays from
weather- and project-related wet
conditions.
The Road Dryer unit provides
safety benefits not possible with
most widely used pavement
drying methods. Traditional
attempts at drying pavement
for construction or maintenance
work have typically involved the
use of jet engine dryers, infrared
heat, or portable blowers,
combined with brooms and
manual squeegees. Each of these
methods has its own limitations
and safety concerns, including
the use of jet fuel, noise, melting
pavement, danger from thrown
rocks or other objects, and slow

results. Because of this, traffic
is often fully restricted from
travelling on roads or runways
where drying work is taking
place. The Road Dryer eliminates
all of these issues, as it swiftly
and safely dries the pavement.
The RD-1200XT preconditions the
incoming air to remove moisture
prior to heating and directing the
heated air to the road, allowing
faster drying time. The unit will
not harm asphalt, as the flow of
drying air does not exceed 204°C.
Weather is not the only
cause of wet pavement. Milling
processes also use water to cool
grinder teeth, leaving the road
surface wet and unsuitable for
paving until dry.
The Road Dryer can follow
behind a milling machine and
immediately dry the pavement
for resurfacing. Because the
pavement is typically ready for
paving or surfacing within an
hour, it allows for increased
throughput by several road miles
per shift. For striping operations,
hydro-blasting leaves the road
surface wet, and it must be dried
before new paint may be sprayed.
With a Road Dryer RD-1200
following the hydro-blaster to
dry the surface, a paint sprayer
may be run immediately behind
the Road Dryer unit, to paint or
repaint lines.

RUBBLEMASTER is updating its RM 70GO! 2.0
model, which is now available with additional
capabilities. A combination that has been
available for the larger compact systems for
a while is now offered with the RM 70GO!
2.0. The proven integrated mesh screen with
refeeding belt is now available with the most
compact crusher in the RM GO! series. This
allows crushing and screening in a single pass.
The additional equipment is transported together
with the crusher unit.
Compact dimensions during operation as
well as during transport, combined with high
throughput, are the main requirements for

The mesh screen makes the mobile crusher
even more efficient. The final aggregate is
screened to the required final aggregate size
in a single pass. Precise sorting accuracy and
a throughput capacity of up to 120tonnes/
hour is included. The RM MS 70GO! screen is
installed directly on the RM 70GO! 2.0 crusher
and no auxiliary equipment such as cranes or
diggers are needed for assembly. A closed loop
is set up using the refeeding belt to produce a
finished high-quality final aggregate in a single

Improved piling rigs
Soilmec’s new SR-75 piling rig is the first in
the firm’s new Blue Tech range. The machine
has been redesigned to make it more efficient,
reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions.
The new design saves fuel and time during
the working cycle up to about 10litres of fuel/
hour. The electrical hydraulic systems have
been upgraded, with new technology for the
former and simpler components for the latter.
The machine has proportional controls
and new hydraulic components for improved

working operations. Higher forces and speed

Indian market bullish
A strong support for India’s Excon exhibition
highlights the bullish construction market

espite demand
remaining subdued
for road construction
equipment, exhibitors
and visitors shared
robust business
confidence at Excon
2019. The show
attracted close to 70,000 business visitors from
India and abroad. The positive confidence was
due to India’s ambitious programme to develop
65,000km of National Highways, along with
large-scale expansion of airports, as well as
planned expansion of state and rural roads.

The 10th edition of Excon 2019, organised
by the Confederation of Indian Industry at
Bangalore in Karnataka State took place from
10th-14th of December 2019. There was a
sizeable presence from Indian and foreign
companies at the show. Joint participation
between Indian and foreign companies was
another highlight. Many Indian manufacturers
have entered into technical and distribution
partnerships with foreign firms in recent
years. There were 1,250+ exhibitors including
390+ overseas companies from 21 countries,
including country pavilions from China,
Germany, Italy, South Korea, Turkey and the UK.
Schwing Stetter India launched its new
range of concrete line pumps: the SPL 1420;
Stetter Concrete batch mix plants CP 21; and
Stetter Concrete batching plant MI. It also
launched its new self loading concrete mixer,
SLM B 2.0; self-propelled concrete mixer SPM
4000; and Schwing Stetter light mast. Schwing
Stetter also displayed a GOMACO concrete
paver as well as an XCMG grader.
LeeBoy India launched its new LeeBoy 585
motor grader for India and other developing
markets. The grader is fitted with a 3m mold

Caterpillar India launched its new Next
Gen Cat 120 grader for the Indian market.
The new machine, according to the company,
delivers higher productivity at lower operating
costs. The features of the product include
ECO mode and variable power. The new Cat
C7.1 engine reduces fuel consumption by up
to 15%. Other features include a redesigned
operator’s cabin with air conditioning, large
touchscreen monitor with information display.
The new filtration technology saves customers
15% on maintenance costs. According to
Gurman Reen, Caterpillar Global Construction
and Infrastructure Division sales & marketing
director, “The Cat 120 Grader will broaden our
presence in India.”
Ajax launched its new Ajax Slipform paver
SPX 1204. According to the company officials,
“PSX incorporates high-quality components
with the ability to offer paving widths between
3.5m and 12m.
Atlas Copco India showed its advanced
Hi Light V4+ and V5+ LED light towers. “The
light towers can illuminate an area of 4,000-
5,000m2 with an average brightness of 20 lux.
This makes them most suitable for road and
highway projects. With the launch of theHiLight
V4+ LED light tower, the light range now
extends from 250-350W. It is the first CPCB
II compliant for light towers in India. It gives
fuel savings of up to 50% compared to metal
halide. The LED lamps are made as per IK08
and IP67 standards,” said S Kumar, business
line manager, Atlas Copco Power Technique,
Portable Air Division, Atlas Copco (India).
Indian backhoe and agricultural tractor
attachments manufacturer, SEC-RJMT
Engineering, displayed its new Roadking
S 90, 4x4 grader. Prabhat Sharma, DGM,
Sales & Service, RJMT said, “ Roadking, S90
enables us to have a presence in the growing
market of smaller graders in India. This is
on the backdrop of state and public works
department’s road construction projects. The
grader, powered by Indian Kirloskar diesel,
delivers 66.2kw @ 2000 rpm, providing higher
levels of cost-effective operations to the road
contractors and even to the equipment rental
agencies.”
According to Sharma the machine has a
novel articulated grader boom and oscillating
middle axle for precise finishing. It offers high
productivity with its Carraro transmission, with
limited slip differential. The company’s previous
offering includes the S 3218 compact grader.
Powered by a Mahindra diesel conforming to
Bharat Stage III, it delivers 41.56kW. RJMT has
sold close to 500 S 3218 graders.
Indian asphalt batch mix plant manufacturer,
Vibrant Construction Equipments has recently
ventured into concrete batch mix plants.
The company, with its complete in-house
manufacturing facility is providing twin shaft
mixers to its concrete batch mix plants. Vibrant
is manufacturing 30-45-60-75-90 and 120m3/hr
concrete batch mix plants. Vibrant has included
the RAP option for its asphalt batch mix plants.
Western India, Gujarat-based asphalt batch
mix plant manufacturer, Atlas Technologies
has entered into a technical collaboration with
Korean asphalt batch mix plant manufacturer

facility being set up by Atlas in Gujarat.”
Atlas manufactures asphalt plants that are
available as skid-mounted and mobile units. It
has recently launched wheel-mounted asphalt
batch mix plants and it also manufactures
mobile and stationery concrete batch mix
plants.
Looking to target Indian roads and
bridge construction projects, Indian Crane
manufacturing major, Tractors India Limited
(TIL), which manufacturers cranes under license
from Grove showed its new RT 880, 80tonne RT
crane at the event. The RT 880 has a full five-
section telescopic boom of 12.1-43.8m. There
are options for a 10.1m fixed lattice and a 17.1m
tele lattice resulting in a total extended boom
length of almost 61m and a maximum tip height
of 63.5 m. Anil Bhatia, vice president sales and
marketing, TIL said, “The new RT 880 comes
equipped with a proven Load Moment Indicator-
based control system for crane operations, and
sophisticated CAN-based operator information
as well as advanced telematics.”

It is a thin, tough layer of asphalt emulsion
blended with finely crushed stone for traction.
This is a cost-effective method to renew road
surfaces and seal minor cracks and other
irregularities. This preventive maintenance
process protects the pavement from moisture
penetration and oxidation. Micro-surfacing
creates a protective layer which preserves the
underlying structure and prevents the need
for more expensive repairs in the future.” The

A new concrete mix has been used to help reconstruct the highway
connection between the villages of Küssnacht and Brunnen in Switzerland

A plant from BHS Sonthofen has proven useful for
a road and bridge project in Switzerland
T
he ultra high-
performance concrete
(UHPC) has been used
more for the construction
time reduction it offers
rather than its high
strength.
However, as the
requirements for the mixing process are
high the contractor KIBAG opted for a plant
from BHS-Sonthofen. The Swiss contractor
decided that this plant would suit the purpose
due to its modern and rapidly deployable
concrete mixing system featuring two high-
performance twin-shaft batch mixers.
The work involved the rebuilding of
three highway bridges for the A4 route. A
fine-grained aggregate, a high proportion
of binder, additives and steel fibres in
the UHPC deliver high material strength
and deformability. UHPC requires a high
energy load, as well as reliable and
durable equipment and KIBAG decided that
equipment from BHS best fitted its needs.
The UHPC mix required for the
construction site was specially developed
in a BHS laboratory mixer at the well-
equipped KIBAG laboratory. Together, BHS
and KIBAG designed a system concept for
manufacturing UHPC based on the proven
and rapidly deployable mixing system from
the TWINMIX range. According to BHS, the
mix components required for UHPC, as well
as its high production requirements in terms
of precision and reproducibility, cannot be
used in standard systems.
Manufacturing this special mix puts high
demands on mixers and the power needed
to produce 18m3 of UHPC/hour equates to
what would be needed for 250m3/hour of a
standard mix according to KIBAG. As UHPC
has a sticky consistency, the system was fitted
with a special high-pressure cleaning system
and was designed to be easily accessible for
maintenance work. In order to keep transport
routes as short as possible, the system could
be placed exactly in the centre of the highway
between the lanes due to its compact
dimensions.
This means that alongside UHPC, KIBAG
will also be able to use its new plant for
conventional concrete mixes in the future,
together with the applicable add-ons, such
as aggregate hoppers. The rotation speed
of the mixer drives controlled by frequency
converters can be flexibly configured in line
with the respective mix requirements. The
system can also be split up on a production
line.

liability, he says, in terms of cost and safety. “This
can cause massive reputational damage to the
infrastructure owner,” he says.
“Where Highways England can never, ever
lose focus is on the acquisition of the right data
to feed systems like ours. If they can’t deliver this
data then we can’t deliver the right information
for them to make the best long-term investment
decision. This is true for any asset; I think asset
owners are really getting the message,” he says.
“In my 10 years at Yotta there has been a cultural
shift by clients towards a data-led approach to
decision-making.” (see box story)
Ignored
People have always been scared of systems
that they think are black boxes. “One of the key
elements of why we have been successful is
around the use of visualisation tools. One of the
things that amazed me even 10 years ago was
just how much data was captured but then simply
ignored because [managers] couldn’t articulate it
to senior decision-makers. The data was, frankly,
too complicated,” says Smee.
It wasn’t the case that the junior mangers who
were closest to the data didn’t understand it. They
likely did understand it, he says. But the software
tools weren’t there to make it digestible to senior
decision-makers whose understanding of the raw
information was less developed than their junior
colleagues.
Smee has a pretty good idea of what
constitutes a so-called smart road. The idea of
a smart road is to create even smarter drivers,
he explains. “A smart road is one that uses
technology to ensure a faster and safer journey
and that is increasingly more informative not just
to the asset owner but to the traveller.”

The update from D6N to D5 is part
of an effort to make all Cat dozer model
names simpler. Over the next couple
of years, the Cat dozer range will be
renamed from smallest to largest, D1 to
D11, with one model/size class and no
more letter modifiers.
The D5 offers increased performance
over the D6N with more weight and
power, improved steering and new
technology features. Its three-speed
automatic transmission has a lock-up
clutch and is said to help ensure faster
cycle times, as well as better power
delivery and fuel efficiency. The machine
also has steering improvements and
upgraded power train controls for better
control.

The D5 is easier to steer and use on
slope work due to advanced controls that
manage the power train and brakes. The
Hill Descent Control maintains preselected
machine speed when working downhill,
while the Hill Hold automatically engages
the brakes when in neutral on a slope,
the Decel Brake Pedal controls machine
speed all the way to a complete stop,
or for smooth inching and the Steering
Radius Control uses steering and decel
pedal input to automatically downshift
for a tighter turning radius and more
manoeuvrability.
The D5 is available in Standard or Low
Ground Pressure (LGP) configurations,
with either a push arm or Variable Pitch
Angle Tilt (VPAT) blade. A folding VPAT
blade is available to help meet regional
transport width requirements.

SDLG’s biggest loader

SDLG is launching its biggest wheeled
loader, the L975F. This machine offers a
7tonne capacity and is designed to meet
Stage III emissions requirements. The
firm says it has developed this wheeled
loader with a focus on durability, fuel
efficiency and improved productivity.
Said to be reliable, the L975F can be
used for a range of tough applications on
construction sites.
Weighing 24.9tonnes, the machine has
been designed with robust rear and front
frames to withstand load distribution,
according to SDLG. Power comes from a 199kW
diesel, which drives through an HTE205C
fixed-axis electro-hydraulic automatic shifting
gearbox. This is the first machine from SDLG
equipped with a fully automatic transmission
built by Volvo. The machine also has an
integrated cooling system that automatically
adjusts fan speed according to engine
temperature, of particular benefit for use in hot
climates.
As standard it has a 4.2m³ bucket with
eight bolted on teeth and two wear plates with
a spill guard plate to prevent material loss.

LiuGong recently unveiled its all-electric wheeled loader prototype, the
856H-EV. This pure electric driveline machine features a regenerative
capability to optimise working time from the battery system.
The firm says that this improves operating performance, while reducing
the energy consumption. The machine utilises well-proven componentry and
its hydraulic system is electrically driven while using off-the-shelf
components. Performance is said to be high due to the 300+kW

Efficient concrete paving
New machine control technology is
helping to boost the efficiency of concrete
paving techniques. While the concrete
paving market was one of the segments
to pioneer machine control systems for
construction, the technology was utilised
on large-scale highway and runway
projects.
The use of machine control technology in
small-scale paving operations is more recent
and has followed a drop in the price of these
systems and the availability of less complex
packages.
One such system comes from Wirtgen in
the shape of its paver control package, now
in its second generation. The firm says that its
Autopilot 2.0 can speed up paving work and
also boost quality. And a contractor in Virginia
has been one of the first companies in North
America to utilise this system for stringless
concrete paving.
Talley & Armstrong, based in Henrico,
Virginia, had already equipped its Wirtgen
slipform paver SP 15i with the first version of
the AutoPilot. After the firm had the opportunity
to test the new AutoPilot 2.0 package, it
equipped its SP 15i with the latest system.
The AutoPilot 2.0 system is compatible
with Wirtgen’s SP 15i and SP 25i pavers and
eliminates the need to measure, mount, and
remove stringlines. In addition, the ground
crew can work without the stringlines getting
in the way. The 3D system is suitable for paving
concrete safety barriers, kerbs, gutter profiles
and traffic islands. It can also be used for road
surfaces with a width of up to 3.5m using
the inset method and 2.5m using the offset
method.
Clay Armstrong from the firm said
that stringless paving saves an enormous
amount of time. “Stringless paving has many
advantages. First of all, you eliminate all the

work involved in setting up the stringlines.
Another factor are the costs saved from no
longer having to purchase the wire and the
support arms.”
Additionally, the paving jobs are completed
more quickly. “The first time we worked
stringless, our job was to pave a curb/gutter
profile in a parking lot. At the end of the
first day of work, my employees would have
normally had to take down the stringline and
set it back up again for the section we were
going to work on the following day. Instead,
they just asked me what they should do. There
were no stringlines to remove or set back up.
That equals direct cost savings.”
He continued: “In the case of composite
radii or tangent sections where it is important

“Since civil engineers are also only human,
we have to correct their models from time to
time. We can change both the vertical and
horizontal alignment during the paving process
to compensate for any defects. Changes to
the vertical curve were difficult or not at all
possible with the previous version. In addition,
we didn’t have the display we now have. We
didn’t have a profile to make adjustments, as is
now possible with AutoPilot 2.0. Now we can
actually make numerous changes and even
delete or add points to an existing model.”
During a Talley & Armstrong project
in Westerleigh Estates, a new residential
development in Moseley, Virginia, the
company used a 75cm-wide curb/ gutter
form that produced a rain gutter 60cm wide in
combination with a curb about 15cm wide and
33cm high. The relatively stiff concrete with a
slump of 5cm had a 28-day strength of
30-35 N/mm². Paving was carried out on a sub-
base of gravel with a maximum grain size of
2.5cm. The concrete mix contained a viscosity
improver and a small amount of setting
retarder in the event of delays in concrete
delivery.
After paving was complete, a liquid curing
agent was sprayed on and later contraction
joints were cut into the curb at intervals of
3.5m, with expansion joints placed at intervals
of 30m.

Earthmoving efficiently
A contractor in North America has made
a major gain in working efficiency through
the use of the latest machine control
technology.
The equipment has been used on a
residential subdivision in Saskatchewan,
Canada. The Grasswood Estates development
is located in Corman Park, Saskatchewan,
a suburb of Saskatoon, the largest city in
the province. A scenic winding 10km road
connects the properties and provides ingress
and egress.
Investor Darren Hagen is the owner and
developer of the Can$2.8 million Grasswood
Estates project. The subdivision is part of
the expansion of Saskatoon as the metro
population increases.
But for the first two years, the homeowners
living in the new subdivision have been driving
on temporary, and in some cases rutted, roads
that wound through the subdivision leading to
their houses.
Hagen then brought in local contractor
Warman Excavating & Trenching Waldheim
to build a permanent, paved road where the
temporary road is located. "Initially, our biggest
challenge on the project was winning the
confidence and cooperation of the homeowners
who had been patiently waiting for their
approximately 10km road to be paved," stated
Jean Poirier, project manager with Warman
Excavating & Trenching. "We went out of our
way to assure the residents that we'll do what
we can to accommodate their needs while
working hard to complete the road quickly.”
Poirier continued, "For the first two weeks
of the project we used layout stakes, which
proved to be a cumbersome mistake. With the
amount of resident traffic going in and out of

amount of time re-staking all the ones that
were run over, pulled up, or relocated because
a frustrated resident wanted them out of the

Poirier also learned fairly quickly that there
are 38 engineers living in the subdivision,
which provided an extra challenge. "There was
one engineer resident who would measure our
progress each day using his own instruments.
It took him a few days before he accepted that
we know what we're doing. I wasn't angry
or insulted since that engineer and I are alike
in needing to know and the desire to make
certain work is completed accurately."
To move away from a staked jobsite, Poirier
contacted Muaz Sheriff with Brandt Tractor,
the local Topcon Positioning Systems dealer for
help to create a stakeless jobsite. Sheriff helped
Warman Excavating create a 3D Site Plan
The contractor initially tried building the roads
using conventional methods but quickly changed
to new technology
which could be used by the heavy equipment
for GPS-guided machine control. The digital site
model was created using Topcon Magnet Office
and P3D software. Warman Excavating then
had all the points and the site plan governing
the progress in the field, displayed in the cabs
of the GPS-governed machines.
For the project, Warman Excavating used
its Komatsu D-65EX crawler dozer and a
John Deere 329 compact track loader (SSL),
both equipped with Topcon 3D-MC2 machine
control, acquired from Brandt Tractor. The 3D-
MC2 system uses MC2 inertial measurement
units (IMU) sensors, which eliminate the need
for receiver posts mounted on the heavy
equipment blades.
The project required 15,300m3 of fill,
39,000tonnes of sand, and 46,000tonnes of
chipped stone.

timeline. The owner changed the completion
deadline to a full month earlier than the
original plan.
"This meant our work week became 7 days,"
stated Poirier. "We had to work harder and
smarter, because there was no way we would
miss the deadline - our reputation has been
built on quality results completed on time."
The work was completed a full week before
the deadline, essentially five weeks ahead of
the original production goal. And with early
completion the firm avoided a penalty for every
day past the deadline.

contractor STRASSING on the A66
autobahn upgrade project in Germany

in road building
Construction work on a stretch of the A66
autobahn in Germany has been optimised with
help from the BPO technology supplied by Volz
Consulting. The route connects Frankfurt with
Fulda in central Germany.
The BPO software package was utilised by
the contractor to help optimise construction
operations, boosting efficiency and quality,
while cutting costs. The system was used to
network the mixing plants with the trucks, to
increase the efficiency of the materials supplies
to the site. Networking the materials
production operation with the road
construction works ensured timely deliveries
and also ensured that asphalt was used while
still within the suitable temperature range for
compaction.
Using the BPO package allows a database
to be generated for operations, giving the
construction team an overview of operations
from the mixing plant, through truck
scheduling and to the paving and compaction
work. Delivery notes were interfaced to the
weighing system in the mixing plant and this
data was recorded automatically. Location data
showed the position of trucks enroute,
providing accurate estimates as to arrival times
onsite. Documentation was also generated for
truck waiting times using the Geofence tool,
based on GPS position data of the trucks.
The construction firm, STRASSING, was
able to map relevant data on a single tablet
device fitted with a SIM card. The site
supervisor could view all relevant data as each
truck was unloaded, with the system providing
continuous updates as to how much material
had been placed and by which mixing plant it
had been produced.
Using the system allowed the site
manager, who had carried out the planning in
advance with BPO, to follow the construction

process in real time from the office. The system
provided continuous updates on construction
progress and possible deviations.
The contractor said that the BPO system
was easily integrated into its operations and
provided a stable system architecture, even
when no mobile internet connectivity was
available.
During installation, the GPS signals from
the paver were recorded using the BPO
package. It logged delivery note data, notes
and photos and linked this altogether using
GPS coordinates assigned to each position in
the construction section. The data could then
be integrated within BIM and linked to the
finished data model.
Using the package made it possible to
check where each delivery note was installed in
the construction field, when and where which
messages dropped off, and what data was
recorded. This feature allowed for the
recording of accurate and detailed
documentation about the individual sections
of the route. The site manager was able to
evaluate the work simply by looking at the
collated data. This allowed the construction
firm to analyse a range of factors such as
material consumption data and paving
progress.
According to Dipl-Ing. Andreas Mechler,
senior site manager of Strassing, "The future of
road construction lies in the digitisation of
construction processes. STRASSING has
recognised this early.”
The firm was able to receive training for its
construction team to use the BPO package
from Volz Consulting and Mechler said that this
was highly useful.

between Trimble, Hilti and Boston Dynamics.
The aim of this agreement is to explore the
integration of Trimble’s and Hilti’s construction
management software solutions, GNSS
technology and reality capture devices with
Boston Dynamics’ Spot Robot platform. This will
form the basis for more accurate working onsite
and more efficient machine control operations.
Autonomous robots play a significant role in
construction, specifically in production and
quality control workflows by enabling the
automation of routine tasks, reducing workload
and improving safety. The companies say that
they will jointly develop a proof-of-concept
solution. This will utilise Trimble’s and Hilti’s
reality capture devices and these will
communicate with a cloud-based construction
management application. The Boston Dynamics
Spot Robot will then be used to enable up-to-
date, as-built data analysis. The autonomous
capabilities support the dynamic nature of the
construction environment. The partners say that
this will allow the robot to bypass obstacles and
maintain its defined path to support routine tasks
such as daily site scans, progress monitoring,
asset management and remote support.
Meanwhile, multidirectional communications
between the robot and the cloud application will
support a continuous flow of information, closing
the loop for the construction environment.
“Utilising robots for routine tasks in
hazardous environments to improve safety,
efficiency, and data capture consistency is part of
our digital transformation vision,” said Aviad
Almagor, senior director for Mixed Reality and
Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) at Trimble.

Recycling first for UK’s strategic network
A surface course containing 50% RAP
has been used for the first time on the
UK’s strategic network. The mix was laid
between junctions 25 and 26 of the M25
which orbits London and is operated and
maintained by Connect Plus Services on
behalf of Highways England.
FM Conway engineered the M25 mix for
main contractor Skanska, using planings from
two ‘donor’ roads and a bespoke Styrene-
Butadeine-Styrene (SBS) polymer-modified
bitumen (PMB), made in its own plant.
Contractor Toppesfield laid the material
during a night-time closure in September last
year.
“Manufacturing our own PMB allows us to
make binders that are specific for the works that
we are undertaking,” explained FM Conway’s
technical manager Mark Flint. “With jobs like
this, which have high percentages of RAP, we will
design the bitumen based on the properties of
recycled material that we will be using.”
Previously, only 10% RAP had been used in
the surfacing layers on the strategic road network
in the UK - which encompasses motorways and
some major roads - although higher proportions
of RAP have been deployed in lower layers.

permission to use the 50% RAP, since the design

Surface courses differ from binder courses
because they must contain aggregate with
a particular polished stone value (PSV) to
give the right amount of skid resistance. FM
Conway tested core samples from several roads
maintained and operated by Connect Plus
Services in order to verify that the aggregate
had the required PSV. FM Conway tests in its
own laboratory, reducing turnaround times and
speeding up decision-making.

Taking cores, to check on the make-up,
integrity and materials in a road, is becoming
a more common practice in the UK, as road
authorities work to classify their assets, says Flint.
“We have ongoing programmes with numerous
local authorities, where coring and testing
roads is part of the routine testing for their asset
management records.”
Prior to the M25 project, FM Conway supplied
and laid 50% RAP surface mixes to Transport
for London (TfL) for sections of the A1 and the
A40, both of which carry extremely heavy traffic
volumes. And in central London, it supplied a mix
containing 80% recycled materials to the London
Borough of Westminster.
Both the A40 and Westminster jobs used a
single layer solution. “Because you are putting
it down in a single layer monoblock, you avoid
joints which not only improves the life of the
road, it also means that you spend less time on
site,” said Flint. Around five days were saved on
the A40 works.
Projects like these are important because
they demonstrate that high-performance roads
can be created using high proportions of RAP,
said Flint: “We want people to understand that
creating these mixes is a highly engineered
process,” he says. “We spend time and money
developing the material and the technology. We
want these roads to last.”

Pavement albedo: now we know more

Technology (NCAT) and the
National Concrete Pavement
Technology Center in the
US have carried out an
extensive study into the
albedo of asphalt and
concrete pavements. Results
of the study, which was
commissioned by the Federal
Highways Administration
(FHWA), were published in
December.
The albedo of a pavement is
its ability to reflect solar energy,
measured on a scale of 1 to 10.
Albedo, which the researchers
found changes over time, impacts
on the thermal behaviour and the
performance of pavements.
“Both concrete and asphalt
pavements are influenced by
the temperature of the materials
in them,” said Mike Heitzman,
assistant director and senior
research engineer at NCAT and
one of the principal investigators
for the research. “The less energy

The research suggests that
albedo can impact on pavement
performance by a factor of
between 10-15%. So, for instance,
an asphalt pavement might
experience 10% more cracking or
rucking, according to Heitzman.
The researchers took readings
in seven locations in different
states, chosen to reflect a range of
aggregates and climates. At each
location, measurements were
made for five asphalt roads and
five concrete roads. “In the past,
studies have been fairly limited to
local areas,” said Heitzman. “By

country, we had a great variety

of aggregates to work with. That
came to be very important for the
asphalt pavements in particular.”
The aim of the research was
to produce thermal models linked
to albedo changes which could
be plugged into design software.
Findings were quite conclusive
for aggregate pavements but less
so for concrete. “With asphalt we
were able to demonstrate that
the coarse aggregate in the mix
played a key role in the albedo of
the pavement,” said Heitzman.
One reason for this could be
that in warmer, Southern states,
black mould tends to grow on the
concrete surface, darkening it, he
explains.
Further research would be
required before the impact of
albedo became part of design and
testing, said Heitzman, and it may
be more efficient to look at other
factors which play a bigger part
in performance and performance
deterioration. “There are another
10 or 20 variables that influence
performance that may be more
relevant.”

allows the operator to change the seat
position through 180°.
The control panel and the seat console swivel
with the operator, providing a forward view for
the direction of travel during transport, loading
and dumping.
This helps to optimise the line-of-sight both
in the new main direction of travel as well as in
the working area facing the skip. Wacker Neuson
claims that the feature boosts safety as the
operator has a better view and does not have to
twist around in the seat for reversing for example.
The feature reduces the need for
manoeuvring on confined construction sites. The
operator can steer the dumper with the skip in
the travel direction, load or unload it with a view
of the loading area, rotate the seat and drive
away in the opposite direction, without having to
turn the vehicle.
Driving with a load is safer as the skip is
behind the operator, so the heaped load does
not obscure the forward view. To further optimise
visibility, ruggedised cameras can be fitted for
the front and rear.
Other features for the machines include
proven hydrostatic drives, articulated pendulum
joints and swivel tip skips. Customers have a
choice of a canopy, fold-down roll over protective
structure and a cabin. In addition, a protective
grating on the skip protects the operator and
cabin from falling material and from damage
from an excavator bucket.

Sandvik claims that its upgraded DinoTM
DC410Ri rig is rugged and versatile
for construction site applications. The
machine replaces the earlier DinoTM
DC400Ri surface top hammer drill and
features full radio remote control.
The firm says the new Dino DC410Ri
offers improvements in electrical and
mechanical reliability, 15% higher tramming
power and other updates for improved
reliability and productivity.
This compact machine is used for hole
sizes from 51-76mm and offers mobility and
stability for cramped urban construction
sites, as well as for demanding quarry and
infrastructure applications. It has a 14 kW
RD414 rock drill, advanced i-series torque
controls and up to 18m2 coverage.
It retains the earlier model’s basic design
but has a new electrical system, a steel-
framed tramming support for the feed beam
and ruggedised rod-handler arms. Other
features include low tramming height, low
centre of gravity and high ground clearance.
The options include a compact noise
reduction solution that is quick to install.
Contractors can select the feed auto-
aligning option, which maintains the
alignment of the feed beam at the preset
angle even if the position of the boom
changes from one hole to the next. Water
flushing is an option for applications
requiring dust suppression, such as
tunnelling.
The new remote control unit has
redesigned joysticks for easier use when
wearing gloves. The drilling control display
can also be replicated on an Android phone
or tablet. And the remote screen, attached
to the remote control unit, gives a view
of the drill rig alignment and displays the
drilling and tramming parameters.

Three speed records have been set
in the UK recently. A cyclist
managed to hit the impressive
speed of 280.55km/h on a special
bicycle that cost £15,000 to build.

sports car fitted with a special

record. This broke the previous UK
cycling speed record of
268.83km/h. The new record was
set at Elvington Airfield on a 3.2km
runway, with the speed measured

Airfield. The man managed to
persuade his specially adapted
tuk-tuk to hit 119.583km/h,

vintage vehicle in 2017 and
completely rebuilt it, spending
£20,000 on a series of upgrades
and modifications. For the record
attempt, his cousin sat in the rear

said he wishes to make another
attempt and raise his own speed
record to over 160km/h. And using
a highly modified JCB Fastrac
tractor, a team managed to set a
World Land Speed record for a
tractor at Elvington Airfield. The
adapted tractor achieved an
average speed of over 216km/h for
its two timed runs along the set
distance, rather faster than the
70km/h it would normally manage.
The 5tonne Fastrac 2 vehicle was
driven by motorcycle racer Guy
Martin and beat his own existing
record (in the earlier Fastrac 1) by
66 World Highways JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2020
over 50km/h, in fact managing a
top speed of 246km/h. The tractor
was modified for the attempt by a
team of young engineers, with
assistance from engineers who
normally work on F1 racing cars.
The tyres used on the tractor were
developed specially by BKT for the
record-setting run. And a racing
driver in the US has set a new
record, for the world’s longest Hot
Wheels track. The 2018 NASCAR
champion, Joey Logano, built a
track measuring nearly 600m long
in his own garage. The track
snaked around the cars of his own
collection, including a DeLorean
and various hot rods as well as a
new special edition Ford Mustang
bearing the Hot Wheels logos. This
was confirmed by officials from the
Guinness Book of Records as the
world’s longest Hot Wheels track.

companies both participated in
the record attempt. Logano
commented that his interest in toy
cars from Hot Wheels had fuelled
his interest in being a racing driver
and that his own son was also
enthused by the brand.
QUICK RESCUE
A group of cyclists out for a
weekend ride in Spain spotted a
deer in difficulties. The animal had
stumbled into the basement of a
partially demolished building,
which had filled with water. The
animal was unable to clamber out
of the water and was in danger of
drowning, so the quick-thinking
cyclists rode to its assistance.
Grabbing hold of its horns, they
helped the animal out of the
water. As soon as it was free, it
sped off without so much as a
backward glance!

CCTV footage, seeing a clear
picture of the man after the time
he claimed the vehicle had been
stolen, and shortly before the high
speed chase. He was sent to prison
for 10 months and will be banned
from driving for nearly four years
on his release.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER
A driver in Germany used a rather
unusual method to douse a fire in
his vehicle recently. The man was
driving along a stretch of
autobahn in Bavaria when he
noticed a burning smell. Pulling
over to the side of the road he
opened the bonnet and realised
his engine had caught alight.
Having no fire extinguisher to
hand, he instead grabbed some
bottles of beer he was carrying in
the vehicle and used their
contents to douse the flames. By
the time local firemen arrived on
scene, the fire had been put out
safely.
DUDE, WHERE’S MY
CORSA?
A young driver in the UK made a
key mistake, forgetting where he
had parked his car, a Vauxhall
Corsa. The 19-year-old drove with
friends from his home in Plymouth
to Bristol to attend a music festival.
He had been unable to park near
to the venue, so had to find a
parking spot in a suburban street
some distance away. And when he
left the venue to return home, he
realised he had forgotten where
he had parked his car. The 10-year
-old compact car may not be
everyone’s dream vehicle but the
teenager likes his little Corsa. Since
its loss he has had to walk to and
from his job, instead of driving to
work.
SPILL MY BEER
A truck travelling along Australia’s
Pacific Highway overturned
recently, spilling its load of beer.
Two lanes of the route had to be
closed while the crates containing
cans of Victoria Bitter beer and
associated debris was removed
from the road. Emergency workers
were offered assistance from locals
wishing to help with the clearing
up work. It is not clear whether any
of the cans of beer could be
retrieved and used as directed.
BOAT HAZARD
Drivers on the UK’s busy M62
motorway recently encountered a
rather unusual hazard following a
traffic incident. A collision
between two vehicles resulted in a
yacht falling from a trailer and
ending up straddling the central
reservation. The yacht had
originally been on a trailer being
towed by a pick-up truck. However
when the pick-up truck and a car
collided, the yacht was thrown
from the trailer. Other drivers
caught in the subsequent traffic
hold-up remarked upon the
unusual sight. The precise
language they used has not been
recorded.
