formal education called the State People's
School, until 1919. After completing his formal
education, he was handed by his father to seek islamic knowledge from several local
Tuan Guru, including TGH. Syarafuddīn and TGH. Muhammād Sa'īd from Pancor
and Tuan Guru 'Abdullāh bin Amaq Dulajī from Kelayu village, East Lombok. They
teach using the halaqah system, where the students sit cross-legged on a mat and
listen to the teacher reading the Kitāb that is being studied, then each student takes
turns in reading.
To learn more knowledge of Islam, he decided to study to Mecca with his
parents, three of his nephews and several family members, including TGH.
Syarafuddīn. At that time, he was 15 years old, which is before the Haj season in
1341 H / 1923.
TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid studied in the Holy Land of
Mecca for 13 years, then he returned to Indonesia at the behest of the teacher he most
admired, namely Shaykh Hasan Muhammad al-Masysyath, in 1934. Arriving on the
island of Lombok from the Holy Land of Mecca to Indonesia, at first, he built the al-
Mujahidin Islamic boarding school in 1934, then on the 15th of Jumadil Akhir 1356
H / 22 August 1937, he founded the Nahdlatul Wathan Diniyah Islamiyah Madrasah
(NWDI). This boarding school is specifically for educating men. Then on 15 Rabiul
Akhir 1362 H / 21 April 1943. he also founded the Nahdlatul Banat Diniah Islamiyah
(NBDI) boarding school specifically for women. These two schools are the first
schools on the island of Lombok that continue to grow and are the forerunners of all
boarding schools under the Nahdlatul Wathan organization. And in particular the
name changed to the boarding school 'Dar al-Nahdlatain Nahdlatul Wathan'. The term
'Nahdlatain' he took from the two school. He is active in preaching around villages on
the island of Lombok as well as teaching.
He is also known as a prolific writer and author. His talent and ability as a
writer grown and developed since he was still studying at Madrasah Shaulatiyah
Mecca. However, due to the large number and density of religious and social
activities that must be filled, the opportunities for him to write are limited. Even so, in
the midst of time constraints, he still had time to write several books, a collection of
prayers, and hero’s songs in Arabic, Indonesian and Sasak.
Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid is known as the great leader in Indonesia,
because of his knowledge’s sufficiency. Likewise, his charisma as a figure of a
scholar of Islam was so great. He is a role model who is very influential because of
his wisdom. His struggle and leadership are always devoted to the interests of the
people. His manner and attitude always showed that he is a low-profile person. This is
what keeps him close to his people and students by not reducing the dignity and
charisma he has.
From all the history of Zainuddin Abdul Madjid's birth, education, and struggle
for both his people and his country, local figures agreed and tried to fight for him so
that he could be appointed as a National Hero in the field of Education and the Youth
