KH. Abdurahman Wahid (Gus Dur) was


born in Jombang, 7 September 1940. He
was the oldest of his five siblings, and was
born into a very prestigious family in the
Muslim community. He was the first
elected President of Indonesia after the
resignation of Soeharto in 1998.

At the end of the war in 1949, Gus Dur moved


from Jombang to Jakarta. He joined KRIS
Primary School before moving to Matraman
Perwari Primary School. in 1954, Gus Dur began
junior high school. He failed to graduate and was

forced to repeat. Then, his mother made a decision


to send him to Yogyakarta to continue his
education. in 1957, after graduating from junior
high school, he moved to Magelang to begin
muslim education at Tegalrejo Pesantren (muslim
school). he completed the pesantren course in two
years instead of the usual four.

Gus Dur started his career as a teacher at


Tambak Beras Pesantren. After that he
continued his career as a journalist of tempo
and kompas. in 1984 he was elected as the

longest leader of nahdlatul ulama. Then, in
1999, Gus Dur founded a political party and he
was elected as the fourth president of Indonesia
in the election that was held by MPR.

In his lifetime, Gus Dur espoused not only

democracy, but also tolerance. He made a real


practice in his daily actions. He became one of great

leaders in Indonesia. A great leader will always be


measured by the public’s assessment after they have
gone, not by the praises of their supporters while
they are in power. Gus Dur is a clear example of a
presidential figure who has continued to be loved
and revered by the people long after he passed
