With Spain and then America having colonized the Philippines from the early 1500 to the late 1800,
it was unavoidable that western compositional techniques found their way into the works of Filipino
composers.

Contemporary music in the Philippines usually refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and
elements from twentieth century art music in the West, as well as the latest trends and musical
styles in the entertainment industry. Throughout the centuries and through several colonial
influences, the music in the Philippines have become too Westernized especially during the
American colonial period and after the Second World War.

The modern Filipino repertoire consist of pieces that have been written in twentieth century idioms
that have evolved out of such stylistic movements as impressionism,  expressionism, neo-classism ,
as well as the so-called avant-garde and New Music.

1
Neoclassicism in music was a twentieth-century trend, particularly current in the period between the
two World Wars, in which composers sought to return to aesthetic precepts associated with the
broadly defined concept of “classicism,” namely order, balance, clarity, economy, and emotional
restraint. As such, neoclassicism was a reaction against the unrestrained emotionalism and
perceived formlessness of late Romanticism, as well as a “call to order” after the experimental
ferment of the first two decades of the twentieth century. The neoclassical impulse found its
expression in such features as the use of pared-down performing forces, an emphasis on rhythm
and on contrapuntal texture, an updated or expanded tonal harmony, and a concentration
on absolute music as opposed to Romantic program music.

When we are talking about the term “new music,” it’s not literally means as “modern music;” it is the
used of new styles and techniques in music incorporating various music, such as ethnic and
electronic music, and other forms of music. New music composers have different approaches in
composing music but not limited to the usual or common methods.

The French term avant-garde ("at the forefront") is used to describe highly experimental approaches
"on the cutting edge" of modern music.

C. Activity: Explain the given question.
