B. Discussion
Understanding the musical form of a piece is an important part of being a musician. Whether you

understanding the structure of a piece. Musical Forms can be explained on its simplest term as the
“backbone” of the musical composition. It serves as a guideline in creating music through the use
of repetitive musical phrases and rhythmic variations. So what are the types of Musical forms?
Musical form is often analyzed and labelled by letters (A, B, C, D…) representing different
sections in the music.
Strophic - AAA,
- Composed of verses. The music is repeated sections with fairly small changes. Bahay Kubo is a
common example.
1
Binary – AB
- When a piece of music has two complementary but related sections that are then repeated
throughout the piece.
Ternary – ABA
2
- The beginning and ending section are the same with a contrasting middle section.

WEEK 5
I. Objectives:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the concept of repeat marks.
B. Discussion
Most music has repetitive section as being part of aesthetic composition. When this particular
repetition is notated on the staff, it is often unnecessary to write each of them. That is how the repeat marks
works in this manner, to avoid needless writing. It also meant to clarify - when used properly - a large
complicated piece of music that is simplified by a few well-placed repeats. So what are the basic example of
repeat symbols?
The most common repeat is the double bar line with two dots, which means to go back to the beginning of the
song and play it through again. It looks like this:
Another double bar line that doesn’t have to repeat all through from the beginning but only to go back to
where you last saw a repeat sign and repeat from there only:
Some other repeat marks are the Da Capo (D.C) , Dal Segno (D.S), Al Fine (up to the end),
D.C Al Fine means go back to the beginning and end at Fine. See illustration:
D.S Al Fine means go back to the sign and end at Fine. See below:
