NOTES AND RESTS

OBJECTIVE: Identifies the values of the notes / rests used in a particular song

This module will help us understand how important are the correct values of
the notes and rest in achieving the correct rhythm when performing a musical piece.
Notes and rests with specific duration and time value are symbols that
represent sound and silence in music.

2. DISCUSSION

Sing and analyse the song.

Identify the different notes and rests used in the song and give its value.
In a musical notation that singers and instrumentalist read in order to perform
a song, sound and silence are marked by symbols.

Kinds of Notes and Their Time Values


The symbols for sounds are illustrated below. These symbols are called
notes. Each note represents a specific length of sound called time value.

Notes guide singers and musicians as to what pitches to sing or play.

Kinds of Rest and Their Time Values


Rests are musical symbols that represent silence. A rest signals
the musicians to pause or take a quick breath in specific time durations.

Dot increases the value of the note or rest by half of its original value.

Kinds of dotted Notes, Rests, Equivalent and Their Time Values

Notes and rests with specific duration and time value are symbols that
represent sound and silence in music. Musical notes represent sounds while rests
represent silence. Notes guide singers and musicians as to what pitches to sing or
play .Rests guide singers and musicians when not to sing or play a sound.
Observing the correct value of the notes and rest is important to achieve the
correct rhythm when performing a musical piece.
