BACKGROUND
Safe work procedures (SWPs) are required when the risk of injury to workers performing a job
task cannot be eliminated by effective work design, work process or equipment. used in-order
to work safely.
Comprehensive Support Services recognizes that Safe Systems of Work (SSW) and formalised Safe
Work Procedures (SWP’s) are essential to ensure a safe work environment and are an important
part of an overall Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) Management System (MS)
Safe Work Procedures (SWP) provides the information and instructions necessary to assist all
employees to perform tasks safely. The SWP’s also assist in the training and orientation of new staff
in the hazards of the tasks to be performed, as well as providing them with the rules necessary to
ensure that they can perform their work in a safe manner.
SCOPE
Based on the contracts, Scope of Work (SOW) to be undertaken at the unit, the generic SWP’s
contained in this booklet can be tailored to or developed, added to the individual operating unit’s
needs and circumstances.
Safe work procedures must be developed for all jobs / tasks, processes, and the operation of
equipment and machinery, where a risk of harm to any person at the workplace exists.
The definition of safe work procedure is: A set of written instructions outlining the method of
performing a job / task activity whilst emphasizing ways to minimize any risk of harm.
A safe work procedure outlines the risks and associated systemic controls measures to be applied.
