unusual design from Kershaw – the
Camp 12 – that’s based on the
Perang-style from Malaysia, intended
to deal with cutting wood better than
a long, thin blade.
The style might be traditional, but
the construction is ultra-modern.
The blade is made from 65MN, a
carbon steel I’ve never heard of, so I
looked it up: ‘This is a medium-high,
carbon-content alloy made for a high
degree of toughness and resilience’.
That sounded useful, so I put it to
work. Carbon steel corrodes easily,
so the blade has a black oxide finish
applied to protect it, but of course,
the exposed edge grind must be
dried and oiled after use.
The handle is made from glass-filled
nylon and despite its hardness,
I found it comfortable and secure,
even with sweaty hands. There’s a
good heft to the blade that allows a
proper swing to make the cut, rather
than needing to force it, helping to
reduce fatigue on longer jobs. I was
surprised to see just how fine the edge
grind was and wanted to see how it
would survive cutting some dry wood.
Another modern touch is the

Charlie Portlock opens a window into the world of the game-shoot keeper
G
amekeepers are busy people
who work hard continually
to solve a wide variety of
problems. We can help them in
this task if we’re well informed
and sensitive to their needs. This
month, we’ll be looking at building
our understanding of what goes into
running a successful shoot, and
investigating when the airgunner
might be able to prove his/her utility.
I’m grateful to apprentice keeper,
Patrick Dickson, who took some time
out of his busy week to share some
of the challenges that he faces in
the job, and to discuss how diligent
and proactive airgunners might be
part of the solution.
THE KEEPER
Traditionally, the gamekeeper was
charged with organising the sporting
activities of a country estate.
Primarily, this meant maintaining
and increasing the populations
of quarry species through habitat
management, feeding and predator
control, as well as ensuring that his
employer and their guests were well
looked after during their sporting
pursuits. These include a variety of
activities from lowland and upland
deer stalking to driven grouse,
pheasant and partridge shooting, as
well as rough shooting (walked up)
and waterfowling.

he Original Model 6 was one of the
first ‘recoilless’ spring-powered air
pistols, produced in the ‘70s, so
this one is about 40 years old. This is a
break-barrel target pistol and has a twin-
opposed piston, also known as the ‘Giss’
action. The pistons are kept in phase by
a rack and pinion mechanism.
A friend of mine brought this round to
me, as pleased as Punch with himself
because he had bought it at ‘a bargain’
price from a gun shop, and he asked me
to look over it and chrono’ it for him.
2
So I set up the chrono, weighed some
pellets out, loaded it, shot through the
chrono’ – and got no reading. I cocked
the pistol again, and found that the pellet
was still in the breech, and there was a
piece of fibre poking out of the transfer
port.
I know from past experience of these,
that this was a piece of the original (pun
intentional) piston seal so it had to come
apart.
I asked if he had test-fired it at the

shop, but he hadn’t. He paid his money,
grabbed the pistol and rushed out. I
suppose, if it had been a functioning
pistol, he wouldn’t have got it for such a
bargain price.
We have covered another variant of this
pistol in Air Gunner magazine, but this
one is the Target model, and differs on
quite a few points in regard to stripping
and rebuilding so I decided to write it up.

need for such transactions to be made face to face (unless an airgun is FAC-rated), but Air Gunner requests that all due caution is excercised when buying or selling an airgun. You must
adhere to the current airgun laws. You can’t buy an airgun if you are under 18 years old. The Swap Shop is not offered to those who sell airguns as part of a business.

Russia’s
seven-shooter
Philip Whiteman finds this replica revolver both fascinating and fun
A
seven-round cylinder is one of
the least unusual features of
the Gletcher NGT R .177/4.5mm
CO2 revolver. Closely based on the
M1895 Nagant Service revolver,
effectively Russia’s Webley, the NGT R
is a gate-loading, double-action pistol
with a rod ejector mounted on a cuff
that pivots around the barrel.
While it looks like a slightly
hump-backed Smith & Wesson, the
Nagant’s cylinder does not swing
out for reloading, although it can be
removed for cleaning after pulling out
its axle pin, the tabbed end of which
is exposed when the ejector rod is
swivelled into its operating position.
If your head is spinning with this,
it gets weirder: there is no half-
cock position – the cylinder can be
hand rotated for reloading, or even
removed for cleaning, with hammer forward face of the cylinder, ABOVE: A fine backward as the round was fired,
