Objectives:
In your journey through the discussions and different tasks, you are expected to:
1. identify the features of the different types of speech;
2. organize content and message of speech according to its type;
3. develop an effective speech; and
4. deliver different types of speech.
Direction: Write T before each number if the statement is true and F if the statement is false.

In this module, you will encounter different communication activities to assess how far
you understand the lesson. This is to sharpen your foundation and master your writing and
speaking skills to prepare you in the world of work and different aspects in the society. Remind
you, modules are like a supplementary to the teacher that will guide you all throughout,
learning will always aspire and fire your desire to continue learning.

Warm Up
Directions: Find someone in your house who will serve as your listener. Your task is to read
aloud the following lines from Marianne Williamson’s A Return to Love: Reflections on the
Principles of a Course in Miracles while the task of the listener is to give feedback on your
performance. Let him/her write his/her comments and suggestions on a sheet of paper.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are
powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask
ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not
to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing
enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all
meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within
us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we
unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own
fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
Organizing speeches serves two important functions. First, organization helps improve
clarity of thought in a systematic way. Second, organization increases the likelihood that the
speech will be effective.
We are going to examine effective strategies for delivering a speech. To help you
enhance your delivery, we will begin by exploring the four basic methods of speech delivery.
Second, we will discuss how to prepare your delivery for different environments. Third, we will
talk how to effectively use notes to enhance your delivery. Finally, we will examine
characteristics of good delivery and give some strategies for practicing effectively for the day
when you will deliver your speech.
What is It
A memorized speech requires you to commit the speech to memory so that you do not bring
your notes when delivering it. As with the manuscript speech, you also run the risk of sounding
mechanical during a memorized delivery. For this reason, keep your memorized speech short
and work harder on your facial expressions and the tone of your voice.
Since memorizing can be very tough and mechanical, it is best that you memorize short
speeches for special occasions. A memorized speech works best for the introduction of a
guest, acceptance of award or recognition, toast, eulogy, tribute, and the like.
2. Point-Reason-Example/Explanation-Point
Example:
In some cases, you may find yourself unaware of or uninterested in the topic. This usually
happens and it is inevitable. Distinguished Toastmaster Craig Harrison (2010) shares the
following strategies that can help you address the problem.
a. Bridging. This entails building a connection between what you do know and what you do
not know.

b. Reframing. This means rephrasing or redefining the topic into something that you want to
talk about. This usually occurs if you think the topic is inappropriate or it is not meant for you.
If you are given a topic that you do not like or is not right for you, do not despair. Simply reframe
it as a topic you would like to respond to. Redefine the topic as you believe it should be, or at

Example:
Most people who speak in public often prefer the extemporaneous method of delivery.
Although it might look more challenging than the manuscript or memorized speeches, it is
more spontaneous and personal.
