About AKU
The Aga Khan University Medical College (AKU-MC) was established in 1983
and enrolls students in a five-year program leading to the Bachelor of Medicine
and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. It has to date conferred 1,370
degrees. The educational offerings in medicine range from a five-year bachelor's
degree to a number of clinical postgraduate residencies.

In the academic year 1996-97, Aga Khan University (AKU) introduced a master's
degree program in Epidemiology and a joint program in Epidemiology and
Biostatistics. To date 57 students have graduated from these two programs. In
1999, a PhD program in Health Sciences was introduced. Course work and
independent research form an integral part of graduate studies. In October 2000,
AKU introduced a Master's program in Health Policy and Management. This
program is designed to train professionals in strategic and operational planning,
policy analysis, institutional management and in health systems research and
development. In 2002, the first batch of three graduates from this program
received their degrees.

The curricular objectives of AKU-MC include clinical competence both in

community settings and hospitals, as well as the assessment of health and
prevention of disease in communities through the primary health care programs
that AKU monitors in a number of urban squatter settlements. Agreements with
leading academic institutions, including Harvard University in the United States,
McGill and McMaster Universities in Canada and Karolinska Institutet in
Sweden, have contributed to faculty and curriculum development. Recent
affiliations are with the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, the University of
British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and University of Alabama, USA. These
partnerships enable higher training and research, specifically in areas where
such opportunities are not available in Pakistan.

Teaching Methodology
The AKU course is conducted in a classroom format. Students from different
walks of life come together and work as a group towards a single goal. Our
environment facilitates learning via teacher-student interaction, study groups and
individual attention for weaker students. At Anees Hussain we focus on
motivating students by making education fun, yet competitive.

Our program not only offers a comprehensive preparation for the aptitude test,
covering all sections, but also extensive interview preparation, which means that
our students are the best prepared.

Salient features of our methodology:

Diagnostic Test
Timed class activities
Teacher Evaluations
Full-length Tests

Material
Our expertise in test preparation is facilitated by the years of hard work put into
our study material. It has been selected and compiled from a variety of sources,
including work sheets developed on each subject by Anees Hussain himself,
regular up-to-date books from the different publishers and re-creations of the
actual tests themselves.

About the Test

The Admission Test consists of five components, including biology, chemistry,
physics, mathematics and english. It consists of multiple-choice questions,
designed to test recall of factual information, application of knowledge, deduction
and problem - solving ability. Classes for AKU admission test preparation start
around the end of December.

The Admission Test is based upon the current syllabi of the Boards of
Intermediate Education in Pakistan for chemistry, biology and physics and by the
Boards of Secondary Education for mathematics. The English language section
tests competency in the English language.

There is negative marking of 1/3 off per error in all sections except English. The
test has a time limit of 2 hours 15 minutes and there is no time limit per section.
At Anees Hussain's Way we also prepare the students for the interview after
they have passed the test. Since interview is more important in the admissions
process, special care is taken for the interview preparation. A panel of expert
doctors and interviewers prepare the students for the tough interview in multiple
turns.

Success Rate
Every year about 30% of the students admitted into AKU are prepared by us.
Most of our students are able to gain admission into one of the top medical
universities in Pakistan.
