Introduction

The Animal Classification Flash Cards: Invertebrates can be used to help children identify animal types through
the use of flash cards, animal type description cards, activities, and games. It focuses on invertebrates exclusively
and covers five types: insects, arachnids, crustaceans, mollusks, and echinoderms. Note that these cover various
levels within the animal kingdom taxonomy.

The following items are included in this product:

• Activities for Flash Cards

• Animal Type Description Cards
• List of Animals by Type
• Instructions for Preparation of Flash Cards
• 50 flash cards (ten for each class)

If the children who will be using the flash cards are not familiar with the invertebrate types, you may want to
show them the Animal Type Description Cards first and put a few of the flash cards under each card for example
purposes.

The flash cards in this set can also be used with the Animal Classification Escape the Volcano Flash Card Game
which is sold separately. This game comes with a set of vertebrate flash cards and includes variations for play that
make it usable for one or more persons.

Activities for Flash Cards
Name It

This can be played with two players or two teams. Hold up a flash card to two players. The first person to give the
right answer earns a point for themselves or for their team. Team members rotate each round.

Last One Standing

This activity is like a spelling bee. Have everyone get in a line. Hold up a card to the first person. If he can answer
it correctly in three seconds (or less if you want it to be more difficult), he can go to the end of the line and play
again. If not, he is out and must sit down. Play continues this way until there is only one player left. If your class
is too large, you may want to have the students line up in smaller groups and have multiple games playing. One
of the players who got out could help you with holding up the cards for another group.

Tic-Tac-Toe

Hang the flash cards up on a bulletin board, wall, or whiteboard in a Tic-Tac-Toe grid pattern. The answer side
should be face down. One player or team is X’s and one is O’s. The two players or team members should take
turns giving the answer for one flash card. If the answer is correct, the flash card can be replaced with an X or
O card. The object of the game is to get a row of three X’s or three O’s to win the game so players will have to
strategize when choosing flash cards to answer.

Around the Room

Players sit in desks or chairs for this game. Have the first person in the first row stand next to the student behind
him. Show them the picture side of a flash card. The first person to say the correct answer gets to move on to the
next person in the row. The loser sits down in the seat he was standing by when he lost whether it is his own seat
or not. Flash a flash card to the winner and the next player. As before, the winner moves on to the next player
while the other sits down. Play continues until one person is able to go all the way around the room and get back
to his own seat. He is the winner of the game.

Hot Seat

Divide everyone into two teams. Pull out one desk for each team and put a set of flash cards with the problem
side up on each desk. These will be the Hot Seats. Have one player from each team come and sit in a Hot Seat.
Say an answer. The player who can find and hold up the correct flash card first earns a point for his team. Players
then shuffle the flash cards and sit down. A new player from each team gets in the Hot Seat and play continues.

Grab It

This is a game for two players. Lay out all of the flash cards between the two players with the pictures facing up.
Call out an answer. Players race to be the first person to grab the right flash card. The one who does keeps the
flash card. Play continues until all of the flash cards are gone. The one with the most flash cards at the end is the
winner.

Ball Toss

This can be played by two player or two teams. You’ll need a ball and a container to throw it into like a trashcan,
basket, pail, or tub. Each player or team member takes turns giving the answer to a flash card you hold up. If he

gets it right, he can take a shot with the ball. If he gets it into the container, he earns 2 points for himself or his
team. If it hits the container but doesn’t go in, he gets 1 point. This can also be played with bean bags and/or a
bean bag toss board.

Spin the Bottle

Put everyone in groups of about 6-10 players. Have everyone sit in a circle and put a bottle on its side in the
middle. Put a pile of flash cards with the picture side up somewhere in the center of the circle where the bottle
won’t knock it over. Pick one player to start. That person spins the bottle. Whoever the bottle points to must give
the answer for the picture shown on the top flash card. If he is correct, he stays in the game. If he is wrong, he is
out. The top card is discarded and the next player spins the bottle. Once again, the player it is pointing to must
give the answer for the flash card. Play continues until there is only one player left. Note: When you get down to
only two players, you may want to have them skip spinning the bottle and just let them take turns giving answers to
flash cards.

Two Circles

Put the players in two circles, one on the inside and one on the outside, with an equal number of players in
each circle. Each player should have one flash card to hold with the picture facing out. Play music and have one
circle walk one way while the other circle walks the other way. At a random time, stop the music. Players must
then stop walking and face the person closest to them in the other circle. They then must show their flash cards
to their partners. Everyone should give the right answer for the flash card shown to them. Start the music and
repeat the process.

Flyswatter

Tape up the flash cards made with protector sleeves (Method 2 on the following page) picture side out on a wall or
whiteboard. To play the game, divide everyone up into two teams. Give one player from each team a flyswatter
and have them stand at designated spots equidistant from the board. Call out an answer. Students must then race
to swat the correct flash card on the board. The first person to do so earns a point for his team.

Scavenger Hunt

For this activity, you’ll want to use cards that have only the picture printed on one side. This can be played by one
person, a group of people, or teams. Hide the cards around a room. Have the player(s) find the cards, bring them
up to you, and tell you the answer to them. In team play, the team that brings up the most cards and answers
them correctly wins.

Animal Type Description Cards

Instructions: Print on paper or card stock. Cut out cards on solid black lines. Laminate if desired.

Insects
Insects have a segmented body that is divided into three parts:
the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. They have an exoskeleton,
antennae and six jointed legs. Most insects have wings.

Arachnids
Arachnids have a body that is divided into two parts: the head and
the abdomen. They also have an exoskeleton and eight legs.

Crustaceans
Crustaceans have an exoskeleton, compound eyes, two pairs of
antennae, and three pairs of mouthparts. Most crustaceans are
aquatic and have a body divided into three parts: the head, the
thorax, and the abdomen.

Mollusks
Mollusks are soft-bodied animals that usually have a hard shell with
a mantle. They have one or more muscular feet that are used for
moving their bodies.

Echinoderms
Echinoderms are marine animals with radial symmetry. They have
tube feet and skin that is spiny or bumpy. Many echinoderms can
regrow lost body parts.

Instructions for Preparation of Flash Cards

There are two methods you can choose from when printing and preparing the flash cards.

Method 1:

1. Print the flash card pages front to back on card stock.

2. Cut apart the cards on the solid black lines.
3. If desired, laminate for durability.

Method 2:

1. Print the flash card pages individually on printer paper.

2. Cut apart the cards on the solid black lines.
3. Insert the flash cards with the picture side out into clear card deck protector sleeves.
4. Put regular playing cards behind each flash card. This will strengthen the cards.
5. Insert the flash cards with the answer side out behind the playing cards.

Note: The flash cards have been designed to be 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in size so that you can use Method 2 above
for assembling the cards. One way to maintain the exact size is to play with the options in the print dialogue box
of your computer. Printer settings vary, but you may be able to select “Actual size” under sizing or change the
scaling to “None.” Know that some printers will resize these pages when you print them no matter what you do
because of the way they were designed by the manufacturer. You should, however, still be able to use the cards to
play the games.
