Scientific Name: Brassica oleraracea L. var. italica

English Name : Sprouting broccoli

Taxonomic Position (according to Cronquist, 1981)

Kingdom : Plantae

Division : Magnoliophyta

Class : Magnoliopsida

Subclass : Dilleniidae

Order : Capparales

Family : Brassicaceae

Identifying characterstics:

Economic importance of Broccoli:

Broccoli is a vegetable of important economic value as well as a source of vitamin C and anticarcinogenic
property substances. It is a delicious vegetable which is more nutritious than other vegetables. Broccoli
has antioxidant which can prevent the cancer. Broccoli is gradually becoming popular among the urban
people and the Chinese restaurants together with the grand hotels. They are using broccoli for making
soup and other delicious foods.Along with other conventional vegetables it can bring diversity in both
wholesale and retail vegetables markets.
