Introduction:
This interactive course planning tool is designed to assist accounting major undergraduate student
planning their upcoming accounting courses.
Instruction:
STEP 1: - Basic Information
Fillout the basic information about you.
Also, not all courses are available during Summer semesters; students who wish to take summer
semester should understand that the required course work is condensed into 5 weeks of lecture, with
2 lecture session (4 hours) within a week. It can be challenging if you need time to absorb the
material in a slower pace.
(a) A CPA-oriented career means you are trying for the most competitive positions, have excellent
grades earning at least a GPA of 3.0, and have excellent communication skills.
The California requirements to take the CPA exam are: Bachelor’s degree, 24 semester units in
accounting, and 24 semester units in business.
Please be aware of the changes in 2014 for the California requirements for licensure. There is a
requirement of 150 semester hours. You can still sit for the exam with only 120 semester hours, but
you cannot get licensed until you obtain 150 hours.
The elective courses that are most heavily tested include: ACCT 506, ACCT 508, and BUS 320. Also
ACCT 501(highly recommended), ACCT 504 (highly recommended), or ACCT 509 all have CPA exam
coverage.
(b) A non-CPA career means you may have a variety of career directions and would desire a set of
classes that open up different careers for you. Each of these directions would include a set of classes
that supports the career. You should see an accounting advisor for advice on these classes.
A couple of classes to consider include:
· Government Accounting (ACCT 504): prepares you for working in the non-corporate
environment; for example, a charity, or government agency such as the federal trade commission or
a municipality job.
· Information Systems Auditing (ACCT 507): prepares you for working as an Information Systems
Auditor within an accounting firm or a corporation.
· Internal Auditing (ACCT 551) that prepares you for working as an auditor within a firm.
· Fraud Examination (ACCT 518) that covers some of the current issues that presently are causing
problems for firms.
STEP 3: Approval
After completing the survey, emails the this excel worksheet to a faculty advisor.
The advisor will assist you in completing the survey and upload your plan to the department.
