IECEx Training

Applus+K2 training division has developed a number of vital training courses aimed at the oil and
gas industry, offshore and onshore. The IECEx training is designed as a pre-learning requirements
for the IECEx Certificate of Personnel Competency (CoPC) for personnel to work safely in a place
where there is a possibility, however small, that an explosive atmosphere may be present. This de-
mands that appropriate work methods and equipment are used and these requirements can be met
by compliance with the standards and legislation which have been developed specifically for this
purpose.

In the UK, the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) im-
posed requirements to employ only competent persons to
undertake electrical installation and maintenance work.
Other countries have enacted similar legislation. Compa-
nies in the petrochemical industry have normally provided
in-house training for employees who were expected to
work in potentially explosive atmospheres. Some contrac-
tors and companies send their personnel to receive this
essential training from an approved training centre.
Participation in a training course provided by a training
provider is one of several paths to achieving competence
based on the standards set by the International Electro-
technical Commission (IEC).
Competence depends on knowledge, skill, experience and
training. Competence includes the ability to carry out spe-
cific tasks versus prescribed general requirements speci-
fied in regulations, standard and installation procedures.

IECEx Training
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
The minimum level of technical education required for
IECEx training will depend on the unit of Competence
a person wishes to be certified through the IECEx CoPC
scheme.
DESIGN OF THE PROGRAMME
Depending on the unit of competence, the program is
divided into two halves, namely:
(a) Classroom training (Job knowledge and preparation
for theory examination)
(b) Practical assessment (skill test)
The ‘job knowledge’ component takes place in the classroom
and provides the information as contained on the training
manual and experience you need to tackle the practical
assessment testing in the simulated Ex equipment instal-
lation in the workshop.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course the attendees should be able to
state the relevant theories and able to perform the assess-
ment related to the following:
• General principles of explosion, concept of hazardous
area classification and zones.
• Explosive gas and equipment groups, standards and
equipment nameplate marking.
• Methods of explosion protection and Ex equipment
applicable.
• Protection concepts of Ex d, Ex e. Ex i, Ex m, Ex n, Ex o.
Ex p, Ex q.
• Installation and inspection requirements of IEC stand-
ards on Ex Equipment (IEC 60079-14 & -17).
• Of the use of inspection tables of IEC 60079-17.

TRAINING UNITS
IECEx training is divided into units. All units include a tutorial
session in the classroom followed by practical tuition in a
simulated work environment where the special techniques
are taught. This is followed by the assessed practical
work.
Training Unit Ex 000
Basic knowledge and awareness to enter a site which
includes a classified hazardous area.
Training Unit Ex 001
Apply basic principles of protection in explosive atmos-
pheres.
Training Unit Ex 003
Install explosion-protected equipment and wiring systems.
Training Unit Ex 007
Perform visual and close inspection of electrical installa-
tions in or associated with explosive atmospheres.
Training Unit Ex 008
Perform detailed inspection of electrical installations in or
associated with explosive atmospheres
Each unit may be studied individually or as part of a com-
plimentary pair covering the installation and maintenance
of a particular subject. The suggested complimentary
pairs are as follows:
Training Units Ex 000 and Ex 001
Apply basic principles of explosion protection and safe
systems of work (1 day).
Training Unit Ex 003
Install explosion-protected equipment and wiring systems
(2 days).
Training Units Ex 007 and Ex 008
Perform visual, close and detailed inspection (2 days).

DETAILS OF ASSESSMENT

On completion training, candidates undertake an assess-

ment on both their knowledge and practical ability.

Part A: Written Assessment:

Knowledge evidence required answering MCQ on the last
day of training.

Part B: Practical Assessment:

The practical installation assessment is undertaken on special
rigs where the candidate has to install specific items with the
appropriate type of cable within the prescribed time. The
accuracy is assessed by the centre using criteria defined
by the certification body.

Inspection assessment is undertaken using pre-assembled

work rigs on which equipment has been pre-installed and
where several deliberate errors have been introduced.
These may need visual, close or detailed inspection tech-
niques to find.

TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT OUTCOME

Successful candidates are given a certificate of attend-

ance in the units undertaken. After completion of the
IECEx training, the trainee is now confident to sit for
IECEx CoPC by an approved certification body that
provides 3rd party assurance that the person has knowl-
edge, skills and qualification based on the Certification of
Personnel Competence (CoPC) prerequisites.

Possession of a certificate does not indicate that the candidate

is fully competent. Full competency can only be gained after
significant work has been undertaken in the field whilst
under the supervision of a competent person.
