155:501 ADVANCED TRANSPORT PHENOMENA | FINAL PROJECT (100 POINTS)

INTRODUCTION
Consider the following system of two tanks. Water is transferred from one tank to another through a belt
moving upwards with a velocity Ubelt.

PART A (20 POINTS)

For the water flow over the moving belt, simplify the differential mass and momentum balances (x and y
directions) as much as possible. State all assumptions used.

PART B (20 POINTS)

Using the simplified momentum balance, derive an expression of the velocity profile as a function of Ubelt,
thickness of the film formed (δ), angle θ and y.

PART C (20 POINTS)

Conduct a sensitivity analysis for the thickness (δ) of the water film formed on the belt by varying the velocity
of the belt within the 0.1m/sec to 2m/sec as well as angle θ between 5° to 30°.

PART D (20 POINTS)

In the scenario that the piping system needs to undergo maintenance or cleaning, the operator needs to close
valve A. As a consequence, the height of the water in the second tank will start decreasing since there is no
inflow from the first tank. Develop an analytical expression to estimate the time needed to empty the second
tank.

PART E (20 POINTS)

The second tank is connected to a piping system (material: galvanized iron, loss coefficient (K) for the 90°
elbow is 0.3) for transferring water for other use. The pipe diameter is 4 in. Determine the maximum flow rate
through this pipe.
