Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll

Workbook page 86 & 87
BEFORE YOU READ
1) Read about Lewis Carroll. Do you know any characters in Alice in Wonderland or
Through the Looking-Glass? Who are they?
No, I don’t know any character of Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking-Glass.
I didn’t read that before.
2) Read the background to the storey on page 87. What is unusual about the rabbit?
What do you think a place called “Wonderland” is like?
The rabbit wears a waistcoat and it’s got a pocket watch. I think a place called
Wonderland is very beautiful and special.

1) Read the extract on page 87. What happens to Alice after she drinks from the bottle?
Alice was getting smaller and smaller every second.

2) Read the extract again. Put the events a-h into the correct order.
a. 4 Alice leaves the key on the table.
b. 8 Alice finds something to eat.
c. 2 Alice puts up a key which unlocks one of the doors.
d. 5 Alice worries the drink might be dangerous.
e. 3 Alice decides to go into the garden.
f. 1 Alice tries to get out of the room, but discovers that she can’t.
g. 6 Alice becomes so small that she can’t reach the key.
h. 7 Alice gets annoying with herself.

3) Answer the question.

1. What is Alice like? Think of three adjectives to describe her. Give reasons for your
choice.
curious: Because she follows the strange rabbit.
adventures: She wants to live an adventure.
careful: She is very careful when she founds the bottle.
2. What do you think happens next? Does Alice eat the cake? How does she get out
of the room?
I think Alice eats a piece of the cake and meets than someone who helps her to get
out of the room.

4) Read what happens next. Who does Alice decide to visit?

Alice decide to visit the March Hare.

5) Listen to the next part of the story. What time is it when Alice arrives at the March
Hare’s house? What time is it when she leaves?
Magdalena Sinner S1A 24.04.20

It’s 6 o’clock when Alice arrives at the March Hare’ house. She leaves at 6 o’clock too,
it’s always the same time there.

6) Listen again. Complete sentences 1-10 with characters A-D.

1. The Dormouse sits between the Hatter and the March Hare.
2. Alice doesn’t wait for an invitation to sit down.
3. The March Hare offers Alice something to drink.
4. The Hatter makes a comment about someone’s hair.
5. Alice thinks the Hatter and the March Hare aren’t polite.
6. The Hatter asks unusual questions.
7. Alice likes puzzles.
8. The Dormouse sleeps most of the time.
9. The Hatter looks at his watch to find out what day is it.
10. The March Hare thinks that butter is good for watches.

7) Answer the questions.

1. What do Alice, the March Hare and the Hatter do that is rude? In your opinion,
who is the rudest? Why?
They say things that aren’t so nice to hear. They aren’t respecting each other. I think
in this situation was Alice the rudest because she sat down without asking before.
2. What is the different between “I mean what I say” and “I say what I mean”?
“I mean what I say” means that I’m convinced of what I say and “I say what I mean”
means that I say to you what I think, my thoughts.
3. Does Alice enjoy the tea party? What kind of parties do you enjoy?
Alice doesn’t enjoy the tea party because she thinks they aren’t polite. I like parties
where I can be together with my friends.

8) Imagine you are at an unusual tea party. Write description of it.

An old classmate invited me yesterday to his tea party. I’m very excited because there is my
whole old class. He invited everyone. It’s in his big party cellar in the Background street. To
drink we get tea, of course, but also coffee. He gets some snacks and a cake too. I have never
been at a party like this before. I think it’s unusual because nobody else has a party like this.
