Doctor Who Script
Genre
The genre is science fiction because the terminology that is used makes it clear. They use
words like “lasers” and “X wing” that aren’t realistic and you can tell that it is made up. Also
with them moving from different time periods it makes it quite obvious what genre it is.
Narrative structure
Multi strand narrative as there are two separate stories: one is of the Doctor and one is of
Clara but at the end they merge. The script is nonlinear as it doesn’t follow chronological
order. It goes forwards and backwards in time. However, it is linear in terms of following the
doctor. Also, the script links with the genre as you should be allowed to mess around with
the time because normally in science fiction they move from different time periods. It has an
open structure as it ends with “exterminate” and we do not know what happens after. Who
do they fire out? Do they kill the Doctor? So, you will have to watch the next episode to see
that. The structure of the whole script is circular as it starts on the battlefield and ends on a
battlefield.
Target Audience
The target audience is aimed at people any age because there is content everyone will like.
It is aimed at families as Doctor Who is on TV at a peak time so they are trying to make
families watch it together. Also the content in the show isn't that graphic but in parts are
probably where young children need to watch it with their parents. It attracts both male and
female, as there are two storylines that attract male and female. All groups A-E there is a
wide audience.
Style
The speech is positioned in the centre of the page and the names of the people who are
speaking are in capitals. The headings of the page are all in capitals and are underlined. If
the text is cut to or continued it will be ranged right. On the both left and right side of the
page there is the number of scenes. The title of each scene is in capitals and are underlined
in bold. The text is used for everyone so the script needs to be detailed. Header on every
page.“Ext” means exterior and “Int” means interior. This is positioned at the top of the page
where the title of the scene is. There are big gaps on each side because then actors or
anybody else who is reading the script can write their own notes. There is a use of short
sentences so then it is simple and not complicated for the crew to read the text. For
example, “Raising up now.” This gives the crew a simple idea of what is happening and it
isn't confusing. Also another instruction that is used is“(calling from off)” this means
someone is shouting from off screen so they aren’t seen on camera. Next to the character's
name “(cont’d)” is used sometimes this signifies that the dialogue continues. Scene
descriptions are all ranged left throughout the script. All voice overs are shortened down to
“(V.O)” this is used when the actor isn't seen on camera but they are speaking from their
mind. The use of italics are used for emphasis throughout the script. The instructions used in
the script like “Nods” are placed in between lines because then it is easy to read for the
actors. Also they are in short instructions to allow the actors to read it easily and it will be
easier for them to remember.
Content
It is a three act structure that has a very clear beginning, middle and end. There is a mixture
of modes of address throughout the script. Jumping back and forth from time makes the
audience watch as you have to be focused when you are watching it.an example of them
jumping back and forth from time is “From the future.” This is what the Doctor says in the
text. There is a good description of the content in the script and it allows us to create an
image of what is happening in the scene.
