Mission

The mission for the 2019/2020 school year in Brown Middle School’s
Media Center is to ensure that students are provided sufficient
opportunities to visit the media center for various reading/ literacy/
technology programs that will spark increased interest in literacy thus
increasing reading levels, book checkout, participation in Accelerated
Reader, MyOn and the district’s Race to Read Program in grades 6th-8th.
General Activities
The following will take place frequently in the media center. The
descriptions are below.

Morning News Show (daily)- The morning news show will be live each
morning for teachers to tune into their classrooms. Approximately, 9:10 an
intercom message will be played to remind teachers to log in to the BMS
Youtube channel. Students for this school year will have already be
pre-chosen prior to leaving school at the end of May. Students will audition
for the roles available.Students who are chosen will be provided with a
script to take home during the summer to practice. A copy of it will also be
available via google classroom.

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Participant meetings- ( August-January) - Upon

approval for funding to purchase books for the Bowl, Students will meet
with me three times a month (during lunch) to discuss the books, view
practice questions and swap books. There are 10 books that must be read
by each student so if we plan to participate, we must begin early. Students
have already been pre selected by teacher recommendation. I will meet
with the students during the first week of school.

Makerspace Mondays- We were awarded a $5,000 grant to create a

makerspace in the media center. Each Monday- one Monday per grade
level will be allowed to send students during the day to participate in
MakerSpace Mondays. There will be a bi-monthly theme for students to
who would like to participate in the particular MakerSpace event.
Interested students can sign up with the designated teacher.

Lunch Bunch (Thursdays)- Students will sign up for Lunch Bunch Thursday
with me in the media center. There will be a limited number of students
allowed per grade level for this event. Students will be able to sign up on a
monthly basis and will receive special passes to enter. During this time,
students may enjoy reading or playing board games.

Flip Grid Fridays (Fridays) - Students will be invited to create a Flipgrid

using the studio on Fridays. There will be plenty of opportunities to create
poems, or book reviews. The theme will be announced on the morning
announcements and will run for the entire month. Students will be allowed
to make the videos during lunch or a designated teacher will be assigned to
send those students who may be interested and have signed up.

Book- Checkout- (Wednesdays) A schedule will be created for students to

rotate during Language Arts Classes on a bi-weekly basis. The teacher
may come as a class or send 6 students at a time. During check-out,
students will record minutes read for the APS Race to Read initiative as
well as take AR tests from the previous book check-out. Teachers will be
