The Powers of the Mind

The mind is one thing that has always fascinated and puzzled us. It is the only thing that we
can be certain of existing, yet, apparently, we do not know exactly what it is, why it occurs,
and how it occurs.

The brain has many different functions including our 5 senses (the sense of touch, sight,
taste, smell, and hear), solving problem, communication, storing information, and creativity
or generating ideas.
Let us know more about the human brain!
• This fist-sized, 3 pound organ is responsible for the overall functioning of our body.

• Key information processing unit that interprets the world of our experience an vital response
unit that allows us to react to the world.

• Like a capsule of our consciousness, of what we know, and of our memories.

The brain has three major parts -- the cerebrum, the cerebellum and the brain stem.

Cerebrum acts as “executive center” of the brain responsible for remembering, learning, and thinking, as
well as taking charge of language, and emotion.

This is in charge of our intellectual activity and consciousness.

The cerebrum is the largest of the three brain sections, accounts for about 85 percent of the brain's
weight, and has four lobes. The lobes-frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital -- each have different
functions. They get their names from the sections of the skull that are next to them. The parietal lobe
helps people understand what they see and feel, while the frontal lobe determines personality and
emotions. Vision functions are located in the occipital lobe, and hearing and word recognition abilities
are in the temporal lobe.

Things are different in the cerebellum. That region controls voluntary movement, when you want to lift
your fork, wave your hand, brush your hair or wink at a cutie. This part of the brain is responsible for our
instinctive, autonomic behavior that serves survival functions.

The brain stem connects the brain and the spinal cord. Controls involuntary movement such as
breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and food digestion.
Neurons, the basic functional units of the nervous system, are three-part units and are key to brain
function. They are comprised of a nerve cell body, axon and dendrite, and they power the rapid-fire
process that turns thought into movement.

Split Brain Theory - The brain has two hemispheres that perform tasks differently from each other. The
left hemisphere and the right hemisphere. The left brain performs intuitive, creative, and synthesizing

The right brain performs analytical, logical reasoning, and critical thinking.
That’s all for this lesson. I hope you have learned something on the brain dominance. For your activity,
please read MIND MAPPING on the link which will be posted on our google classroom. 😊
