processes and functions may help in improving thoughts,
behavior, and feelings. EsP-PD11/12PM-Ig-6.1

Brain Dominance: Which of these apply to you?
1. I am very organized
2. I remember faces more than 1. I daydream a lot
names 2. I hate taking risks
3. I think things through 3. I tend to get emotional
before making a decision
4. I make a to-do-list
4. If someone’s mad at me, I
5. I trust my gut instinct
can tell even without the
person saying a word
5. I work best in a quiet space
If you have more YES answers from
the LEFT column, you are probably
LEFT-BRAIN dominant, while if you
have more YES answers from the
RIGHT column, you are probably
RIGHT-BRAIN DOMINANT
How understanding the left
and right brain help you to
improve your learning?
Left Brain vs. Right Brain: What Does This Mean?
How the human brain works
The human brain is an intricate organ. At approximately 3
pounds, it contains about 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion
connections. Your brain is command central of all you think,
feel, and do.
Your brain is divided into two halves, or hemispheres. Within
each half, particular regions control certain functions.
The two sides of your brain look very much alike, but there’s a
huge difference in how they process information. Despite their
contrasting styles, the two halves of your brain don’t work
independently of each other.

This theory is based on the fact that
the brain’s two hemispheres
function differently. This first came
to light in the 1960s, thanks to the
research of psychobiologist and
Nobel Prize winner Roger W. Sperry.
The left brain is more verbal,
analytical, and orderly than the
right brain. It’s sometimes called
the digital brain. It’s better at
things like reading, writing, and
computations.
The brain has three major parts:
• The cerebrum
• Cerebellum
• Brainstem
✓The brain stem connects the spinal cord and
the brain
• It controls functions that keep people alive
such as:
• Breathing
• Heartrate
• Blood pressure & Digestion
Things are different in the Cerebellum
This region controls voluntary
movement but then an area in the
cerebellum translates your will into
action.
• The Cerebrum is the largest of the three brain sections
accounts for about 85% of brains weight and has four
lobes
• Lobes frontal-emotions
• Parietal-see&feel
• Temporal-hearing
• Occipital-visionfunction
The cerebral cortex can be
divided into four sections,
which are known as lobes
(see image). The frontal
lobe, parietal lobe, occipital
lobe, and temporal lobe have
been associated with different
functions ranging from
reasoning to auditory
perception.
The frontal lobe is located at the front of the
brain and is associated with reasoning, motor
skills, higher level cognition, and expressive
language. At the back of the frontal lobe, near
the central sulcus, lies the motor cortex. This
area of the brain receives information from
various lobes of the brain and utilizes this
information to carry out body movements. Damage
to the frontal lobe can lead to changes in sexual
habits, socialization, and attention as well as
increased risk-taking.
The parietal lobe is located in the middle
section of the brain and is associated with
processing tactile sensory information such
as pressure, touch, and pain. A portion of
the brain known as the somatosensory
cortex is located in this lobe and is
essential to the processing of the body's
senses.
The temporal lobe is located on the bottom
section of the brain. This lobe is also the
location of the primary auditory cortex, which
is important for interpreting sounds and the
language we hear. The hippocampus is also
located in the temporal lobe, which is why this
portion of the brain is also heavily associated
with the formation of memories. Damage to the
temporal lobe can lead to problems with
memory, speech perception, and language skills.
The occipital lobe is located at the back portion
of the brain and is associated with interpreting
visual stimuli and information. The primary
visual cortex, which receives and interprets
information from the retinas of the eyes, is
located in the occipital lobe. Damage to this lobe
can cause visual problems such as difficulty
recognizing objects, an inability to identify
colors, and trouble recognizing words.
• Different parts of your brain are connected by nerve fibers. If a
brain injury severed the connection between sides, you could
still function. But the lack of integration would cause some
impairment.
The human brain is constantly reorganizing itself. It’s
adaptable to change, whether it’s physical or through life
experience. It’s tailor-made for learning.
As scientists continue mapping the brain, we’re gaining more
insight into which parts control necessary functions. This
information is vital to advancing research into brain diseases
and injuries, and how to recover from them.
Mind mapping
Is a powerful thinking
tool. It is a graphical
technique that mirrors
the way the brain works
and was invented by Tony
Buzan.
