STRESS IT’S CAUSES AND EFFECTS

STRESS-Type of CHANGE THAT CAUSES
PHYSICAL ,EMOTIONAL OR
PSYCHOLOGICAL STRAIN
Quote of the Day:

“Perhaps the most important ingredient in
my work is my brain-particularly the right
brain….the free and spontaneous side,and
the left brain, which is careful and
methodical”
-Brian Johnson-
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students shall be able to:

 1. Identify the different parts of the left and right

brain
 2.Explore ways on how to improve brain functions
for personal development.
 3. Realize the importance of physical activity to
improve brain functioning such as critical
thinking,developing healthy habits and self-
acceptance
Activity:“Know thyself”
 Instructions:On a piece of paper, answer the following with YES or NO in 5
minutes
1. I am very organized ______
2.I remember faces more than names____
3.I think things through before making a decision
4.If someone is mad at me,I can tell even without the person saying a
word____
5.I work best in a quiet place_______
6.I daydream a lot _____
7.I hate taking risks _______
8.I tend to get emotional______
9.I make a to-do list_______
10.I trust my gut-instinct ______
Interpretation:
If you have more “yes”
answers from numbers 1-5,
you are probably left- brain dominant

If you have
more “yes” answers from numbers
6-10, you are probably right-brain dominant
What happens to the brain:
TIME,ACTIVITY,SUBSTANCES
 During the first three years of life, the brain
experiences most of its growth.Synaptogenesis, or
the creation of pathways for brain cell
communication occurs
 75% of adult size by age 2

 Research shows that the brain is more like a

muscle—it changes and gets stronger when you use it.
 BRAIN has approx. 86B NEURONS(functional unit),AND
Trillions of connections
 Inhalants, such as glue, paint, gasoline and
aerosols, destroy the outer lining of nerve cells
and make them unable to communicate with one
another
 Studies have found that marijuana use hinders
memory, learning, judgment and reaction times,
while steroids cause aggression and violent mood
swings

 Scientists have found that drug destroys

neurons that make serotonin, a chemical crucial
in controlling sleep, violence, mood swings and
sexual urges
PARTS OF THE BRAIN
Cerebrum –Largest(85 % of brain)
Brain stem-Vitalcenters(temperature,breathing,alertness)
Cerebellum-Balance and coordination
THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT BRAIN
HEMISPHERE
THE RIGHT BRAINED AND LEFT BRAINED
PERSON:A MYTH
Researchers believed that brain dominance determines a
person’s preferences,problem-solving style, personality
characteristics, and even career choices.

There is nothing good or bad about either preference. Both

orientations can be equally successful in accomplishing a single task;
however, one may be more appropriate over other depending on the
situation
The Proof:Because of technology, we are able to scan our brains in
specific activities. If you see images of our brains while reading, doing math,
listening to music, or painting, you can see that both left and right
hemispheres of our brains are active.
What Can You Do to Get Smarter?
 The key to growing the brain is to PRACTICE!!! , the
brain undergoes major transition as it is a “work in
progress”
 • Exercise.
• Drink coffee. ...
• Get some sunlight. ...
• Build strong connections. ...
• Meditate. ...
• Sleep well. ...

What Can You Do to Get Smarter?
Mentally-stimulating activities
Protect head from injuries
Make good social connections
Manage stress
Avoid prohibited drugs
Avoid/Limit Alcohol
 SALIENT POINTS:

 Only physical movements are

compartmentalized, left brain controls the
right side of our body when moving. Right
brain controls movement on left side of the
body

 Allhumans use both sides of the brain

simultaneously(whole-brained beings),there is
no dominant side
Identification: Read each statement carefully. Write the correct answer on
the space provided.

__________1. It is the largest part of the brain, 85% of the total brain mass.

__________2. Responsible for the vital centers like breathing, alertness,

and body temperature,circulation

__________3. The functional unit of the brain.

__________4. What part of the brain is responsible for balance and

coordination.

__________5. What lobe is responsible for visual function.

II. Suggest at least 2 personal ways to enhance brain function .
