BRAINPOWER: what do you know

about the brain?

The brain is a complex organ that controls thought, memory,

emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger

and every process that regulates our body. Together, the brain and

spinal cord that extends from it make up the central nervous system.

Theory of Brain Lateralization

The theory of brain lateralization was developed by Robert Ornstein

and Roger Sperry. It stated that each side of the brain has different

functions, While humans use both sides, each one has a dominant side

which, according to the theory. Explains much about his or her

behavior, interests, personality. And mode of thinking. This led to the

coined terms left-brained or right-brained individuals

RIGHT-BRAINED INDIVIDUALS
People with right brain dominance are said to be more emotional,
swayed by feelings and seem to view things and events through feelings.
They look at visual reference as a whole then go through details. They
are intuitive, risk takers, creative and unpredictable. They tend to be
disorganized, unable to make clear their priorities and lack time
management.
lEFT-BRAINED INDIVIDUALS
People with left brain dominance are very organized, logical and detail
oriented, They process ideas in a methodical step by step manner and
this enables them to commit less mistakes. They favor rigid schedules and
deadlines. They are more auditory learners and are better at using words
to remember than visual aids.
CRITICAL AGE
There is a consensus among researches that brain cells
regenerate throughout life, as said by Doug Postels, a
pediatric neurosurgeon in New Orleans, but that new
growth happens very slowly after a certain age. The size of
a brain doesn't increase much after 3.

During the first 3 years of life, the brain experiences most

of its growth and develop most of its potential in learning.

1. the brain parts are adaptable.

2. deprivation of intellectual stimulation occurs
dramatically before the age of 3
Drug Damage
there are several items that may mildly or severely affect the brain’s behavior.

Inhalants - they destroy the outer lining of nerve cells and

make them unable to communicate with one another.
examples are glue, paint, gasoline, and aerosols.
Marijuana - it hinders memory, learning, judgement, and
reaction time.
Ecstasy - it destroys neurons that are tasked to make
serotonin, and it is crucial in controlling sleep, violence, mood
swings, and sexual urges.
Steroids - they cause aggressions and violent mood swings.
