German psychologist Erik Erikson described human development as going through eight
stages of life from (1) ____________ (birth–18 months) to (2) ____________ (65–death).
In the first stage, babies gain a sense of trust towards the person or people looking after
them. If a child does not get this nurturing, he or she may find it difficult to trust anyone in
the future. Erikson labelled the next stage as ‘early (3) ____________ ’(2–3 years), where
children learn to walk and talk, as well as developing a sense of independence. However,
children can be very (4) ____________ at this stage, and feeling uncomfortable can
(5) ____________ to feelings of shame. The next stage is the ‘preschool’ stage (3–5
years), when children start to copy the adults around them and assert control over their
environment. The negative feelings they learn at this stage are feelings of guilt if they exert
too much control over others and the environment. School age (6–12 years) follows, when
children learn many new skills, although failure to do as well as their peers can
(6) ____________ in feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. The (7) ‘____________’ stage

(13–18 years) follows, which is the time when life and the person’s role in it become more
complex. A sense of (8) ____________ often occurs at this stage as the ego develops and
young people don’t know where they belong. A common criticism about this age group is
that the (9) ____________ of today have a(n) (10) ____________ attitude towards life but
this is simply because their sense of risk is not yet fully developed. In addition, their mood
seems to (11) ____________ from one extreme to another. After this comes young
adulthood (18–40 years), where people start thinking about having a family of their own.
The penultimate stage is known as ‘middle adulthood’ (40–65 years) and is the time when
people establish their positions in the world from both a social and career point of view. It
also brings on an interest in or fear of the (12) ____________ process as people realise that
maybe they need to get fitter or go under the surgeon’s knife to keep their looks. The final
stage is usually when people retire and begin to slow down. People in this stage are often
referred to as elderly. But in today’s world, where life (13) ____________ is much higher
than before, many of them are extremely active and do not take kindly to this epithet.
