How are Fossils Formed?

Is it not fascinating to discover the deep secrets of our planet? The naturally preserved in

the petrified form of remnants or marks of ancient organisms are called fossils (Parrott, 2019).

They are not just all about dinosaurs, but fossils can come from any animal or plant that lived a

long time ago. For me, what makes it more interesting is the term petrified. It is so familiar to me

because I am a fan of the Harry Potter Series and petrification is the process of being turned into

stone, which gives me a little idea about this.

I learned that you learn a lot from a fossil. In the video, “How are Fossils Formed?” by

the Creation Evidence Museum, I realized that scientific findings can be interpreted from a

biblical worldview. That made me open my Bible to the Book of Luke 19:40 WEB, Jesus said, "I

tell you that if these were silent, the stones would cry out." Then, thousands of years later,

scientists discovered that stones have this capability. The passage gave me goosebumps. In the

Bible, Genesis 6–8, the great flood covered the entire Earth, killing all creatures that did not get

into the ark of Noah. Then, some scientists and others who took interest in fossils assumed that

most fossils found in some parts of this planet are the remains of creatures killed during the great

flood. So how are these formed? And how are they recognized as the evidence for evolution?
The process of when animals or plants became fossils is called fossilization. One example

shown in the video is a petrified pine log. According to Baugh, the lecturer, it is a specialized

fossil because it has three forms: the pre-mineralized material, the petrified material, and coal.

The fossil itself intrigued me, but I wonder what’s the explanation behind this. Another example

shown in the video is the solid rose flower rock found in a well in Europe. In just three weeks,

this rose became a solid rock. The explanation behind this is as an organism starts to rot or decay

under a watery environment, sediments cover it. The groundwater contains minerals. Over time,

dissolved minerals can harden or strengthen after filling or sipping in the organism, now called a

fossil. Eventually, more sediment layers cover the layer containing the fossil. The pressure

makes the fossil turn into a rock. But in the case of the solid rock rose, only the water- carrying

minerals changed the rose into a mineral matter or a fossil. The explanation was too vague for

me not until I learned that fossils were discovered because layers of rocks are worn away by

wind and rain (erosion).

Baugh stated that each stone has a story to tell. Scientists use them to figure out what life

was like before any of us existed. They study fossils to know how animals lived a long time ago,

how an organism looks, how the Earth has evolved, and how living matter has changed over

time. If the discovery of the fossils didn't happen, people remain clueless that dinosaurs once

existed on our planet, the great flood and some weird animals are not just a myth, the Earth is

old, and more. Indeed, I was fascinated by the deep secrets of our planet.
