3 Physical Education - Basketball

Rationale:

In Elementary Physical Education students should be introduced to as many movements and activities as possible,
therefore this unit was designed to span 5 days. The beginning of the unit is focused on the development of
fundamental skills such as ball handling and dribbling. Later lessons focus on more difficult skills such as passing and
shooting. The Teaching Games for Understanding method of instruction is weaved throughout the unit as emphasis is
placed on experiencing the skills and movements as opposed to reaching a level of “mastery”. In Teaching Games
for Understanding students are quickly engaged in an activity/game. The game can be modified to allow students to
learn and practice a variety of skills. Rather than practicing drills, which can be monotonous at times, students are
immersed in a game.

Student assessment is based upon student participation and development of skills. Skills checklist emphasizes that
students are using proper techniques (ex. B.E.E.F for shooting, dribbling with one hand) and not their ability to
perform the skill (ex. not assessing ability to make a basket).

If needed, additional days can be added to practice skills that students may find more difficult.
