This document is a college assignment submitted by Aldrin Jesril R. Basco to Engr. Danlor P. Alorsabes at the National University College of Engineering about transient voltage surge suppressors. It defines a transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS), also known as a surge protective device (SPD), as a device installed on AC or DC power lines to protect sensitive equipment from damage caused by momentary power surges or transients. TVSS and SPDs are considered crucial protection and are typically installed at power inputs and outputs to serve as effective barriers against transients and power fluctuations.

A “Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor” (also known as TVSS) is an older industry term which has been replaced in Standards bodies by the term “surge protective device” or SPD. A transient voltage surge suppressor is a device which is installed on an AC or DC power line to act as a cutoff if there is a momentary surge of electrical power, also known as a “transient.” TVSS devices are considered crucial to the protection of sensitive equipment which would result in circuitry damage or data loss if power overloads were allowed to pass through to them. With regard to surge protection, TVSS devices or SPDs are by far the most popular forms of damage avoidance available today. TVSS and SPDs are typically installed at AC and DC inputs and outputs in order to serve as effective barriers against transients and power fluctuations over time. While the typical functioning of these devices is to provide no ongoing change to power flow, they are installed for the specific occurrences where the flow of electricity will cause damage.
