SCALARS & VECTORS

1. The two structural members, one of which is in tension and the other in compression,
exert the indicated forces on joint O. Determine the magnitude of the resultant R of the
two forces and the angle Ø which R makes with the positive x-axis.

2. In the design of a control mechanism, it is determined that rod AB transmits a 260-N


force P to the crank BC. Determine the x and y scalar components of P.
Ans. Px = -240 N Py = -100 N.

3. The t-component of the force F is known to be 75N. Determine the n-component and the
magnitude of F. Ans. Fn = - 62.9 N, Ft = 97.9 N

4. Determine the magnitude Fs of the tensile spring force in order that the resultant of Fs
and F is a vertical force. Determine the magnitude R of this vertical resultant force.
Ans. Fs = 250 N, R = 433 N

5. It is desired to remove the spike from the timber by applying force along its horizontal
axis. An obstruction A prevents direct access, so that two forces, one 1.6 kN and the other
P, are applied by cables as shown. Compute the magnitude of P necessary to ensure a
resultant T directed along the spike. Also find T. Ans 26.57, 36.86,2.14kN,3.19kN

MOMENTS & COUPLES

1. The small crane is mounted along the side of a pickup bed and facilitates the handling of
heavyloads. When the boom elevation angle is Ø=40kN, the force in the hydraulic
cylinder BC is 4.5 kN, and this force applied at point C is in the direction from B to C
(the cylinder is in compression). Determine the moment of this 4.5-kN force about the
boom pivot point O.
Ans. MO _ 0.902kN.m CW

2. The system consisting of the bar OA, two identical pulleys, and a section of thin tape is
subjected to the two 180-N tensile forces shown in the figure. Determine the equivalent
force–couple system at point O. Ans. M = 21.7N.m CCW

3. In order to raise the flagpole OC, a light frame OAB is attached to the pole and a tension
of 3.2 kN is developed in the hoisting cable by the power winch D. Calculate the moment
MO of this tension about the hinge point O. Ans. MO = 6.17kN.m CCW.

4. The 10-N force is applied to the handle of the hydraulic control valve as shown. Calculate
the moment of this force about point O. Ans. MO = 2.81N.m CW

5. The uniform work platform, which has a mass per unit length of 28 kg/m, is simply
supported by cross rods A and B. The 90-kg construction worker starts from point B and
walks to the right. At what location s will the combined moment of the weights of the
man and platform about point B be zero?

1. Compute the forces in each three members 12, 13 and 14 of the following truss and state there
nature. Ans RAy = RBy =7kN,T12= -8.94 ,T13= -3.6 kN,T14=10kN

2. For the framework shown in fig 2.17 find analytically the magnitude and nature of the
forces in bars 1 and 2 when the load is 10 ton mass. Ans (Bar 1,113 kN; Bar 2,-113 kN)
3. For the framework shown in fig 2.18 find analytically the magnitude and nature of the
forces in bars 1 ,2 and 3. All bars are of equal length. ( bar1= -23.12kN ; bar2 = 5.78 kN
;bar3=20.2 kN)

4. Each member of the truss is a uniform 20 m bar weighing 400 kN . Calculate the average
tension or compression in each member due to the weights of the members. AE

5. A bridge truss is shown in Fig Q5 at its pins half of a roadbed weighing 1000N per meter.
A bus is shown on the bridge having estimated loads on pins E, G and I of the truss
equaling, 0.3 tons, 0.4 tons, and 0.6tons, respectively. The members weigh 50N/m
include the weight of the members by putting half of the weight of a member at each of
its two supports pins .Calculate the supporting forces.(Use g = 9.8m/s2)

FRICTION

1. A uniform block of mass 50kg has a base of square section 0.6 m side. When at rest on
horizontal ground, it is pulled by a gradually increasing force P, applied horizontally,
1.3m above the ground, point of application being below the top of the block. If µ= 0.25
determine whether the block first slides or tips over and the least force required. (Topples
; 113N)
2. Solve Q1, if the force P is applied at 40o to and above the horizontal. (slides ;132 N)
3. The uniform block shown in fig 3.20 weighs 850 N. IF µ =0.3 and the force P is
increased gradually from zero, determine if the block will first slide or overturn and the
least value of P to break equilibrium. (slides when P = 245)

4. A uniform ladder rest on rough ground and is propped against a rough vertical wall. If µ
is 0.5 for the ground and 0.25 for the wall, find the inclination of the ladder to the
horizontal when it is on the point of sliding. (Ans ;41.2o)
5. A ladder of negligible weight is propped against a rough vertical wall, the coefficient of
friction being the same at the wall and ground. The top of the ladder is 10 m above the
ground and the bottom is6m from the base of the wall. If a man climbs the ladder find the
minimum value of the coefficient of friction so that he reaches the top of the ladder
before slip takes place.( Ans;0.6)
