COMPUTATION OF DESIGN TRAFFIC

[Vide Clause 4.6.1 of IRC:37-2018]

Kumargram - Jorai Road (0 km to 4 km)

The design traffic in terms of the cumulative number of standard axles to be carried during the
design life of the road has been computed using the following equation :

365 x [(1 + r)n - 1]

NDes = xAxDxF
r
Where :
Cumulative number of standard axles to be catered for during the
NDes = design period of 'n' years (in terms of MSA)

P = CVPD as per last count. = 352

Number of years between the last count and

x = = 1
the year of completion of construction.
Annual growth rate of commercial vehicles
r = = 0.05
(5%) in decimal.

Initial traffic in the year of completion of construction

A = in terms of the number of Commercial Vehicles Per = P (1 + r)x
Day (CVPD).
= 352 x (1 + 0.05)^1 = 370
Lane Distribution Factor (LDF).
D = = 0.75
(For Intermediate-lane road)

F = Vehicle Damage Factor (VDF). = 4.665

Design life in years for Bituminous layers

n = = 5
(for stage construction)
Design life in years for Granular layers
n = = 15
(for stage construction)

Calculation for 5 years Design Life (for Bituminous layers)

365 x [(1 + 0.05)^5 - 1]

NDes = x 370 x 0.75 x 4.665
0.05

= 2610895 ESA

As per Clause 4.3.2 of IRC:37-2018 in case of stage construction the bituminous layers
should be designed with 1.67 times more traffic than estimated design traffic

So Design traffic = 2610895 x 1.67 = 4360195 ESA

= 4.36 MSA

Calculation for 15 years Design Life (for Granular layers)

365 x [(1 + 0.05)^15 - 1]

NDes = x 370 x 0.75 x 4.665
0.05

= 10196005 ESA
= 10.2 MSA
