FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING PROGRAM INTERNATIONAL

SCENARIO WRITING COMPONENT RULES 2010-11

A scenario is a story that might take place as a logical outgrowth of actions

or events that took place earlier. It is a prediction of the future and is written
as though the future were the present. An FPSPI scenario is a story in which
one possible outcome of the future is developed through character(s) and
plot.

Rules for Scenario Writing

1. Scenarios submitted to the International Scenario Writing Competition are

limited to 1,500 words, excluding the words in the title. Verification of the
word count is made on the writer’s word processing program and noted
on the scenario writing information sheet. Should a concern arise, a hand-
count will be performed.
2. The scenario is set at least 20 years in the future. Futuristic concepts and
trends are incorporated into the scenario, but a specific date is not
required.
3. The scenario must have a recognizable relationship to one of the FPSPI
topics used by the affiliate for the calendar year of 2010-2011.
• Healthy Living
• Air Transport
• DNA Testing
• Water Quality
• Emergency Planning
4. The scenario is printed/typed, double-spaced (on 8 1/2” x 11”
paper) in 12 point Times New Roman or Arial font.
5. Include the scenario title on the first page of scenario text. Include
the scenario title where it is requested on the scenario writing component
cover sheet and the scenario writer information sheet.
6. Complete the appropriate scenario writing component cover sheet and
the appropriate scenario writer information sheet and attach both to the
scenario.
7. Complete the statement of authenticity and include with the scenario.
8. Do not include the author’s name or school on any sheet except the
scenario writing component cover sheet. Scenarios are coded and the
cover sheet is removed so that evaluators have no knowledge of whose
scenario they score.
9. Two copies (the original plus one copy) of each scenario, including the
completed scenario writing component cover sheet and the scenario
writer information sheet, must be submitted to the FPSP Office by the
appropriate submission deadline. A cd, floppy disk, or electronic
backup copy of your scenario must be submitted with the hard
copies. The submission deadlines are on the cover sheet. These are sent
to the affiliate program. (Cover sheets for international submission
will be mailed to affiliate programs in January.)
10. The top three winning scenarios in each division of an FPS affiliate
program are eligible for submission to the international office for the
International Scenario Writing Competition. Submissions to the
International Office must be accompanied by a backup copy on a
CD or floppy disk or sent electronically to the FPSPI office.

• Scenarios must not exceed 1,500 words (See rules).

• The title must be on the first page of the scenario and the
scenario must be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, Times
New Roman or Arial (See rules).
