4
What is It

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Cleaning and disinfecting are the demanding part in all biodiversity programs.
It is not mainly sterilizing the environment, but rather to see to it that the presence
of pathogens will be reduced and to make sure that the transmission of disease won’t
occur.

Four Steps in Cleaning and Disinfecting

1. Cleaning
-Remove all organic and non-organic materials. Broom, shovel or scraper are
a big help.

2. Washing

- It is the most time-consuming and most important part in the process.

99.99% of microorganisms will be removed if correctly done.
- The aim of this process is to remove the remaining organic matter specially
manure, feed and urine and best done with high pressured water.
Steps in washing:

1. Soaking
- Soaking the surface before washing will make the process easier.
2. Applying the detergent
- Another great way to maximize cleaning and shorten the time spent
in this shore is to apply special detergent. It will help break down
manure and other organic matter.
3. Putting hot water
- speeds up washing time. The goal is to kill bacteria and viruses.
Improper handling can cause skin burn because it produces steam.
2. Disinfecting
- The process of applying chemicals to the surfaces which can control and
prevent the growth of microbes. If not completely cleaned disinfection will not be
effective.

3. Drying Time
-Allow the building and all its surfaces to dry and let the moisture evaporate.

Materials and Equipment Necessary For a successful Weaning

Automatic drinkers – an automatic watering device that enable the swine

to drink the necessary amount of water any time, be it day or night.

5
Feeders – devices or apparatuses for supplying food for animals like
swine

Heat lamps/bulbs – a special lamp that will provide heat.

Brooder – it refers to a heated place or container that provides heat.

Disinfectants - are chemicals used to control, prevent or destroy

microbes on inanimate object surfaces.

When to Increase or Decrease Quantity of Feeds

The right and regular modifications in feeding are the foundation to excellent
feeder performance and low feed costs. Feeder adjustment must start with the
first feed put into the feeder.

Even adequate amount of feed is present in the feeder at all times, it cannot
insure increase in the growth rate. To attain maximum growth, manage the amount
of feed flow in the pan to stimulate the development of feeding habit. A gradual
transition should eventually be made to less expensive starter diets and then to
corn-soybean meal diets.

The nutritional needs of growing-finishing pigs are best met by a full-feeding

program. Limit-feeding reduces the rate and efficiency of gain but may improve
carcass quality of finishing pigs. Proper design and adjustment of self-feeders is
necessary to prevent feed wastage or restricted growth.

6
What’s More

TRUE OR FALSE
Write True if the statement is corect and False if wrong. Write the answer on
th espace provided before the number.
_________1. Applying the knowledge in chemicals is important in these most critical
steps in disinfecting.
_________2. Drying Time allows the building and all its surfaces to dry and let the
moisture evaporate.
_________3. Putting hot water speeds up washing time.
_________4. The goal of disinfecting is to kill bacteria and viruses.
_________5. Washing the surface before flashing will make the process easier.

What’s New

Activity No.1 Observe carefully the picture below.

Guide Questions:
1. What can you say about the picture?
2. How will you group them?

What is It

Group Weaners Based on Farm Specification

Weaning is the stage after lactation, piglets are taken away from their
dam and normally proceed to eat only solid food and water. It normally lasts
7-8 weeks and piglets can grow approximately 20-25 kg during this stage.

Tracking the weight gain immediately before weaning to ensure

that there are no growth problems in the first seven days after weaning.

Criteria in Grouping Weanlings

1. Age - the ideal age for grouping weanlings is 3 – 4 weeks or 28 days after
birth.
2. Body weight
a. smaller weanlings - will be grouped and placed together in a separate
pen in the same house. These piglets must be maintained in the creep
diet for longer to allow their body weight to grow and catch up with
other siblings.
b. Bigger weanlings-will be separated and moved to the other pens and
proceed to next
type of diet.

9
Importance of grouping weanlings

1. Grouping of the weanlings allows the body weight of the smaller once
to recover and achieve the optimum growth.
2. Health problems will be addressed.
3. Bigger weanlings will be given a chance to move on to the next feeding
type thus giving the owner, to save resources.

What is It

According to RA No. 10631 AN ACT AMENDING CERTAIN SECTIONS OF

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 8485, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS “THE ANIMAL WELFARE ACT
OF 1998” in Section 1 stated that “For purposes of this Act, animal welfare pertains
to the physical and psychological well-being of animals. It includes, but not limited
to, the avoidance of abuse, maltreatment, cruelty and exploitation to animals by
humans and by maintaining appropriate standards of accommodation, feeding and
general care, the prevention and treatment of disease and the assurance of freedom
from fear, distress, harassment, and unnecessary discomfort and pain, and allowing
animals to express normal behavior.”

Most piglets are weaned between three and four weeks of age, which are very soon
after birth, but until now the most economical solution. Here are five ways to get the
best results out of piglets that might need some extra attention.

1. Start with healthy piglets

This may sound very simple but for a smooth weaning process it is
important. Good piglets are going to start feeding faster and that is the way to
prevent a fall in weaning. We tend to focus on solving any problem the piglets
may have after weaning but we shouldn't forget to look in the farrowing rooms.
The problems may occur because of lack of milk supply, lack of uniformity of
the piglets.

2. Comfortable housing
Piglets hate draughts and they need warmth; the rooms need to be
around 25°C. When they are moved to the nursery, the rooms should be
cleaned and disinfected. Maybe even more important is to get the room dry
after cleaning. Piglets need to spend a lot of energy to keep their body
temperature high enough.

3. Keep piglets from the same litter together

Research has shown that mixing piglets from different litters is a huge
risk factor for diseases like Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) and
Streptococcus suis. Especially around weaning when they do not have a fully
developed immune system and the protection of maternal antibodies
decreases. When piglets are moved into the nursery, try to minimize mixing
because this might enhance the spreading of diseases through the rooms.
Stress due to the formation of new hierarchies will also be minimized. Simply
put: piglets that are busy fighting won’t eat.

4. Training piglets to eat

The biggest challenge is to get piglets to eat after weaning. In order to
achieve this, they need to be trained before weaning. Tasty and fresh feed can
be offered in small portions from the second week of life. The objective is to let
piglets discover eating out of a bowl, so that after weaning they will easily find

13
their new source of feed. It is advised not to change this nursery feed for the
first few days after weaning. Try to use feeding systems where all piglets can
eat at the same time.

5. Water and feed hygiene

If you want to reduce the risk of oral infection, the best advice is to use
organic acid-based solutions in feed and drinking water of piglets. The organic
acids will not only kill the pathogens in feed and water, but also in the stomach
of the piglets. It is a very common and cost-effective way to enhance the
performance of piglets after weaning.

Materials needed in transferring weanlings

Pig cart – it is a small wheeled vehicle pushed by hand and
used to transport piglets.

Sorting boards - sorting panel boards help make pig loading and
moving chores in the barn simple and effective. The painted steel
hinge with drop rod allows larger openings to be covered when
moving pigs. It helps protect farm workers and hogs.

Pig scale – it is a digital camera solution for weighing pigs automatically

for a consistent and more accurate finishing weight. It provides continuous
insights into the growth of the pigs during the nursery and fattening round.
You exactly know, at each moment of the day, the weight, average daily
gain and the weight spread of your pigs.

Disinfectant - are chemical agents applied to non-living objects in order

to destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold or mildews living on the objects.
The “active ingredient” in each disinfectant formula is what kills
pathogens, usually by disrupting or damaging their cells.

Antiseptic - is a substance that stops or slows down the growth of

microorganisms. They’re used daily in medical settings to reduce the risk
of infection and stop the spread of germs. While they’re generally safe, it’s
best to avoid using them for long periods of time.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - is protective clothing, helmets,

goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's
body from injury or infection. The hazards addressed by protective
equipment include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards, and
airborne particulate matter.

What is It

In humans, health and wellness is greatly determined by the food he/she eats.
This is also true in animals. Animal health and growth is largely determined by the
kind of feeds and the feeding system/nutrition.
There are 5 main components in an animal feed
Protein- it is a macronutrient that is essential to building muscle mass. It is
commonly found in animal products, though is also present in other sources, such
as nuts and legumes.
Fats/Lipids- are large organic molecules which are used for energy storage. Lipids
play an important role in storing energy. If an animal eats an excessive amount of
energy it is able to store the energy for later use in fat molecules. Fat molecules can
store a very high amount of energy for their size which is important for animals
Carbohydrates- are nutrients that provide the main source of energy for activities
the body performs. It provides energy for growth, maintenance, and reproduction. It
also helps produce body heat for warmth.
Minerals- provide material for growth of bones, teeth, and tissue and also help
regulate many of the body’s chemical processes. It also helps in muscular activities,
reproduction, tissue repair, and body heat. Although mineral intake may account for
a small portion of the total diet, it is essential.
Vitamins-are essential for normal body functions such as digestion, cell metabolism,
growth, and reproduction. Like minerals, they are also needed in relatively small
quantities. It helps in tooth and bone formation, assist the body in fighting stress,
and prevent infection in the body.

Classification of Nutrients
Macronutrients- are primarily used to generate energy or to incorporate into tissues
growth and repair. There are three principal classes of macronutrients which are
carbohydrates, protein and lipids/fats.
Micronutrients-are essential elements required by organisms in varying quantities
throughout life to orchestrate a range of physiological function to maintain health.
Example of micronutrients are vitamins and minerals.

Nutrient Sources
1. Protein = Animal, Plant Sources, Fish meal
2. Lipids/Fats = Copra meal
3. Carbohydrates = Corn / Rice bran
4. Vitamins = Fruits, Vegetables
5. Minerals = Salt, Lime stone

18
Feed Forms
o Mash
o Pellets
o Crumbles

A ration is the feed an animal receives over a 24-hour period. A variety of feedstuffs,
or basic ingredients, are used. A ration with all the nutrients an animal needs is a
balanced ration.

To solve total amount of feeds required, use this formula:

(total number of piglets based on age) (daily amount of feed intake per head)
(number of days) = total amount of feeds required

Example: Mang Simon has 5 heads of piglets with an age of 12 days old. How many
kilograms he need to feed his piglets in one day?

Solution:

(5 heads) (50g) (1 day) = 250g of feeds he needs in one day.
