The theme of the film

“Only angels have wings 1939,” an American Film represents a story of life revolving

around the pilots in Barranca. The film showcases loyalty intoxicated on love throughout the

character interactions. “Can I stay around,” is a sentiment Bonnie used severally to show that her

love was driving her loyalty to Geoff. The film, in the beginning, introduces the viewer to two

pilots, Joe and Les, who works for Dutchy to deliver mails using planes. The two waited at the

port to see if there was any other new pilot who could disembark and join their team. Instead

they met a cheery beautiful lady named Bonnie. The Pilots interacted with the lady and invited

her for dinner at their operational base. On settling at the base, Joe orders a steak so that they

could eat with Bonnie, but Geoff, the coordinator at the base orders Joe to make a dangerous

flight to deliver a mail. Joe flew the plane, and once he was several feet in the sky, Geoff

receives information that the sky was unclear, and he tells Joe to wait till sky is clear for him to

land. The acceptance to work in the dangerous skylines shows loyalty and love to the job and

Dutchy. Though Joe disregarded the instructions and crushed the plane, Geoff admits to Bonnie

that Joe could die anyway, either then or later, “If he hadn't got it tonight, he was bound to get it

sooner or later” (Watch Only Angels Have Wings Full Movie Online, n.d.). The pilots deliver

their services knowing the risks; they are committed to accomplishing their tasks.

Besides, it is not until Bat MacPherson was loyal that he was accepted and embraced into

the pilot team. Introduction of the Bat into the pilot team realized rejection from Geoff and Kid

for the reason that Bat had jumped off the plane in the previous experience leaving the mechanic

to crush in the plane. Judy, her wife, even questions Geoff, “why do Bat have such a very bad

reputation” (Watch Only Angels Have Wings Full Movie Online, n.d.). Geoff therefore, hated Bat

because he betrayed the mechanic. He refused to have a drink with him. When Kid and Bat took

a flight, a flock of condors spooked the screen, and the debris destroyed the motors. Through

situation, Kid got injured, and he could not move. Bat decided to stay with Kid on the crushing

plane. Kid narrates the experience, “He just sat right while he took it as if it was an ice cream

soda.” Bat proved his loyalty to the flight mates. In the bar Geoff bought a drink for Bat.

Concurrently, the interaction between the pilots, Geoff and Bat, and women, Judy and

Bonnie, contributed to building the theme of loyalty. Bonnie at first dislikes Geoff for his

reactions to Joe’s death. Geoff took the crush lightly and went on eating the steaks, which Joe

ordered before taking a flight. After some time, Geoff also flies into a dangerous sky for lack of

better person to handle the risky venture into the sky. Bonnie was planning to continue with her

journey looking for a job. Bonnie becomes attracted to Geoff, but Geoff compares her to other

ladies who cannot stand him due to uncertainties when flying “Ladies think they can take it, they

can't.” (Watch Only Angels Have Wings Full Movie Online, n.d.). Geoff narrates how her first

wife left her for another pilot. After Geoff took a flight, he returned and found bonnie seated

happily, taking breakfast. Bonnie becomes too loyal to Geoff, and she even takes the place of

Kid.

The narrative is in chronological order. The story starts with the introduction of two

Pilots, Joe and Les, waiting for another Pilot to embark. In the waiting area they met a woman,

Bonnie. Joe likes Bonnie, and he risks a landing to have dinner with her which ends up in a

crush. The crush causes conflict between Geoff and Bonnie. Bonnie blaming Geoff for sending

Joe on a dangerous mission and Geoff blaming Bonnie for being there. After Bonnie realized that

Geoff took the same risk, she is attracted to Geoff. After some time, Bat joins into the film,

where Bat comes with her wife, Judy. Judy and Bonnie are ex-lovers and there is a tension build

up in the environment, which introduces Kid. The story ends up while Bonnie realizes that Geoff

loved her, Bat also reconciles with Geoff over the past flight issues and while Judy understood

the reasons behind Bat’s bad reputation. The film connects several characters and connects them

into an entity with related issues.

The plot uses the tragedy structure where bad thing happens to people for others to feel

pity and transform. Joe dies for Geoff to unite with Bonnie. Subsequently, kids and Bat are

connected in a plane crash to change the attitude of Geoff towards Bat and Kiddies to illuminate

the emotional attachment of Geoff with Bonnie. The narrative also uses flashbacks to relate

characters in the plot. Geoff rejects Bat during their first meeting. The narrative explains the

source of rejection through flashbacks. It takes the viewer back to when Bat jumped off the

plane, leaving the mechanic to die in a crush. More so, Geoff through the conversation

flashbacks on the reasons behind his distrust of women. He explained that he was relating with a

woman who left her for another pilot, who later turned up to be Judy relating to Bat. The

director, Hawk, therefore related characters using the flashback.

Acting

The acts look so realistic. The major parts which make the movie so relatable are the

moments of flight take-off accident and the view of steep mountains of Andes. The filmmaker

took performed a film shot probably on another plane. The film depicts the death of Joe and Kid

in a process with witnesses. The story relates to the man’s struggles and emotional attachment.

The way the actors mourns looks realistic which stimulates the viewers' emotions.

Concurrently, the characters in the story are dynamic. The characters transform from the

beginning to the end. Bonnie, at first, does not like the pilot’s dangerous activities, “I hate

funerals.” In the end, he was happy when Geoff allowed her to stay around. Bat on his

introduction is a betrayer, but he later transforms into a loyal man. Geoff, the main character

changes his view on women after he interacts with Bonnie. Judy, on the other hand, wants to

drop Bat but she finally accepts him after learning that Bat’s secrets and his transformation. The

characters in the play, therefore, changed with time as tragedies taught them.

Cinematography

The creativity in the film shot through the storyline showcase quality and thrilling

experience on the viewer. Some specific events in the movie create a reality and stimulate

viewers' emotions. The flying sequences during the Joe plane crush depict terror in an

unavoidable situation. The Filmer takes the video from the ground which gives a slight view of

the cockpit. As a viewer, the plane will approach the screen.

Moreover, the producer integrated the effect with the disembodied voice originating from

the cockpit. The effects depict and create a sense of Claustrophobia. Hawks involves the use of

perfect view and voices to express harrowing nature of death experience. Just like the

documentary, the scene accounts for every part of the plane crash. The wings fell apart as the

body flips into pieces.

Most flight scenes are attractive. Hawk takes a view of the plane in a dimension that

provides a view of the Alpes and poor terrain. It creates gives an attractive view of the mountain

features. The film gives clear images with sufficient lighting. On the night events, the producer

uses well-balanced lighting which creates comfort when viewing. The producer mastery in sound

and songs enhances the feel of the narrative.

Editing technique

“Only angels have wings,” connects and switches between different cuts to ensure that

the scenes flow from one stage to another. The film has a perfect timing since the editor never

overstayed on a given scene. The scenes are short and create suspense in the unfolding scenario.

For instance, when Geoff tells Bonnie to toss the coin and the outcome could define the stay.

Geoff leaves her for the flight. The film shows Geoff’s flight taking off. The producer cuts and

brings the filming back to Bonnie where she realizes that both sides of coin have heads. She is

happy that Geoff had requested her to stay. The producer switching from one scene to another is

timely.

Hawk uses cross-cutting techniques to ensure that the film flows within the same time.

As Joe continues to fly, the plane Geoff on the ground continues to coordinate the flight. Some

examples of cross-cutting techniques in the film include Kid dying scene and Bat catching up

with the team. Cross-cutting ensures that the film creates notion that two actions are ongoing at

the same time. Cross-cutting techniques capture different locations connects to form a

continuous unit. The producer also uses establishing shots for the viewer to get an overall view

of the location. The videos of flights along Alpes are taken from the bird-eye view capturing the

terrain of the area. He reuses the techniques severally. Additionally, the film scene changes from

one point to another as the effects change to accommodate the suitability to the moods. Bonnie

dresses elegantly, showing her feminism and the influence on men.

Scenes which shows director style

The director's signature style entails catching the plane motions at the action. The director

uniquely represented and simulated the effect of flight and real flights and connects them. During

the production time the film becomes a frontier to after first world war film. Hawks could have

had experience with the first world war during the action. The kinds of plane the used resembled

the ones the soldiers used to drop bombs. The action during the flight scenes shows the situation

at that moment. Dutchy is had to perform two deliveries in a week for six months to get a mail

transportation contracts.

The director also tries to represent the conflict innate to the character especially in the

presence of women. The struggle between love and acceptance to die is prevalent through

Bonnie and Geoff's interactions. Bonnie loves Geoff but fears that Geoff could die in a plane

crash. Bonnie, therefore, shoots Geoff at the arm to deny from taking a flight. Bonnie shows a

struggle. Later Geoff requests her to stay using a unique style, tossing a coin in which both sides

are heads.

Personal reactions.

I like the movie since it depicts the actual scenario at the advent age — the amalgamation

of love, adventure with the aspects of melodrama, and Musicality. The integration of the aspects

makes the film unique, professional and pragmatic. Through my view, the film triggers the
Surname 7

emotional influence especially, when and after Kid dies. It is a part that climaxes the emotional

attachment between the characters. Every character admits to their weakness. The first part of the

film is also exotic; Joe and Les struggle to win the showgirl, Bonnie's love. Joe crushes in a

plane, and what I expected is Les to be a remaining individual for Bonnie. Bonnie starts to talk

with pilots, especially Geoff after she realized the stoic behaviors in the surrounding. It was a

dazzling change in events as the story unfolds. Bonnie becomes a point of entry to the film. Her

interaction with like of Judy, Bat, and Geoff always made me yearn for the next unfolding

uncertainties. It is my best movie for the period ranging 1930s to 1950s.
