MANAGEMENT CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING

AND MANAGEMENT
BY: GROUP 4

Construction Engineering
Is a professional discipline that deals with the designing, planning, construction, and management of infrastructures
such as roads, tunnels, bridges, airports, railroads, facilities, buildings, dams, utilities, and other projects.

Construction Engineer
The key members of building projects, who must have a strong analytical skills and be good on working with a large
team.

A construction engineer is a civil engineer that designs, manages and oversees projects within the construction industry.
These projects may include rebuilding roadways and designing buildings. Their job outlook has been positive but can fluctuate
based on economic conditions.

Most construction engineer specialize in specific type of project such as commercial buildings, heavy highway(bridges,
tunnels, and underground, wastewater plants), mechanical systems, or electrical. Construction engineers operate as part of
engineering expert, part project manager, and part business manager. They creatively serve as a leader and middleman on
construction projects to make sure everything about the project is safe, smooth and structurally sound.

Construction Engineering and management (CEM)

This program is a combined study of basic civil engineering and construction management courses. Graduates shall be
knowledgeable on the fundamentals of structural and construction engineering like design and analysis, materials testing and
quality assurance, building systems, construction technologies, and surveying. Graduates shall demonstrate deep understanding
of management principles and its application that are essential in construction projects such as economics, business, accounting,
law statistics, ethics, leadership, decision making and optimization methods, process analysis and design, safety and cost
engineering.

Involves the application of technical and scientific knowledge to infrastructure construction projects. While engineering
on focuses on design and construction management is concerned and overseeing the actual construction, CEM often represents
a blend of both discipline, bridging, design and management is concerned with overseeing the actual construction. Their skills
may be applied widely to architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.

What does construction engineering manager do?

Construction engineering managers are key players in the successful completion of construction projects. Over the
course of his or her career, a construction engineering manager is likely to work on and oversee a broad of projects. This may
include the design of drainage and sewage systems, building construction, or even larger infrastructure like developing
highways, railroads.
Construction Engineer Skills and Qualifications:
 Civil Engineering- construction engineers using technical engineering skills based on math and physics to predict future
problems and find solutions for them
 Project Management- construction engineers determine the critical path necessary for project to get done, then designs
plan to make it happen. People at all levels look to them for guidance
 Construction management- engineers perform various construction management duties, scheduling, material
procurement and labor planning.
 Leadership- interpersonal skills are essential for construction engineers to lead a large crew and successfully influence
the outcomes of construction projects
 Creativity- construction engineers need to use creativity to innovate and improve solutions
 Planning Skills-planning and design it is essential skills for construction engineers to execute their responsibilities well.
 Communication Skills- good verbal and written communication skills are important for construction engineers because
of constantly submitting reports and share vital information in clear, concise manner.

Work Responsibilities
Construction engineering managers often work out of a central office but may make frequent visits to job sites and
sometimes engage in on-location work with labor. They also tour sites regularly to inspect the work being done and to ensure
that proper standards in the construction project are being maintained.

A construction engineering manager also has a host of other responsibilities. He or she is often called upon to survey the
job site prior to the beginning of a project, addressing environmental issues and local laws or codes that must be followed.

As a construction engineer, your responsibilities may include:

 Planning and overseeing the construction operations of a project

 Designing both temporary and permanent structures
 Checking and modifying plans and specifications for constructability efficiency, and safety
 Developing cost estimates and preparing bids
 Utilizing Building Information Modeling(BIM) software for 3D models
 Managing subcontractor firms
 Working with the owner to ensure that the project meets the requirements
 Solving job site problems, moving between the field and office
 Gaining additional education and training.

Professional skills and expertise

Construction engineering managers must possess a thorough understanding of laws, regulations, and building codes,
especially those that have a direct impact on the project at hand. They must also be able to estimate the total cost of a given
project. Construction engineering managers are also responsible for managing the workings of various other entities involved In
the project. They are responsible for providing expert supervision from beginning to end while also keeping the project running
on or ahead of the schedule and within the budget. The job requires strong leadership and interpersonal skills and attention to
detail.
