Seat Testing Protocol Overview

The document provides test protocols for evaluating the safety and durability of seats, including: 1) Applying loads to test for shear and squeeze points, stability, and durability. 2) Tests include applying 130kg loads to seats and 75kg loads to other seats, as well as 450N and 1000N forces to test stability, arm rests, and foot rests. 3) Guidelines specify locations and durations for applying forces to identify potential safety hazards or structural weaknesses.

General safety requirements
Test Reference
shear and squeeze point EN 12520:2016, 3.3
shear and squeeze point exists if the distance between two accessible parts moving relative to each
other can be more than 7 mm or less than 18 mm in any position during movement
Shear and squeeze points when setting up and
EN 12520:2016, 5.2.1
folding
Shear and squeeze points, that are created only during setting up and folding, including tipping seat, are
acceptable, because the user can be assumed to be in control of his/her movements and to be able
to cease applying the force immediately upon experiencing pain.

Shear and squeeze points under influence of

EN 12520:2016, 5.2.2
powered mechanisms
There shall be no shear and squeeze points created by parts of the seating under powered
mechanisms, e.g. springs and gas lifts
Shear and squeeze points during use EN 12520:2016, 5.2.3
There shall be no shear and squeeze points created by loads applied during normal use.
Shear and squeeze points are not acceptable if a hazard is created by the weight of the user
during normal movements and actions, e.g. attempting to move the seating by lifting the seat or
by adjusting the backrest.

General construction EN 12520:2016, 5.1

All parts of the seating with which the user comes into contact, during intended use, shall be designed to
ensure that physical injury and damage are avoided.
These requirements are met when:
a) edges of the seat, back rest and arm rests, which are in contact with the user when sitting are
rounded or chamfered. All other edges accessible during use shall be free from burrs and/or sharp edges;
b) ends of hollow components are closed or capped.Movable and adjustable parts shall be designed so that
injuries and inadvertent operation are avoided.
It shall not be possible for any load bearing part of the seating to come loose unintentionally.
All parts which are lubricated to assist sliding shall be designed to protect users from lubricant
stains when in normal use.

Position the seating on the floor surface with the rear

legs or base restrained by stops. Stops are used to
prevent the item from sliding but not tilting no higher
than 12 mm, except in cases where the design of the
item necessitates the use of higher stops, in which
case the lowest that will prevent the item from
moving shall be used."(EN1728:2012 5.3 page14)

10°)with the pull force gauge, 10 times during 10
seconds.
If overturn, reduce the back force to a magnitude that
just prevents rearwards overturning. The back static
force shall not be reduced below 410 N. If the article
tends to overbalance at this force, the force applied
300m to the seat shall be increased until this tendency
ceases. NO DAMAGE
