Backward Moment Load Test Standard for Back Pans of

S705 1/3
Four-wheeled Vehicles

1. Purpose
1.1 This standard is intended to confirm the relationships between the backward load
applied to the seatback by a passenger at the time of rear collision, a load resulting
from excessive leaning against the seatback by a passenger, etc. and the irregularities
of the seatback.

2. Application
2.1 It shall apply to all seats of four-wheeled vehicles. However, as for separate seats that
are symmetrical and having exactly the same conditions in relation to the centerline of
the vehicle, it may apply to only one seat on either right or left side. Also, if there is any
member that restricts the backward movement of the seatback to the rear of the
seatback in a state of being mounted on an actual vehicle, and in the case of a
seatback of a wire frame type, no test is required.

3. State of test piece

3.1 As a test piece, a new seat frame COMP or back frame COMP (only in the case of not
being connected to the cushion frame. Notice that the case of a lifter that moves the
seat cushion only shall also be included) shall be used. However, the headrest frame
COMP, and S-spring, etc. that are deemed to be unnecessary in this test may be
omitted. Also, the test piece shall be equipped with any required mounting devices and
adjustment devices after coordinating with relevant departments.

3.2 As a general rule, two test pieces shall be tested among test pieces having the same
shape.

4. Test method
4.1 As for the adjustment devices for the test piece, the seat track shall be set at the
rearmost position, and the other devices shall be set at the design standard positions.
Notice that the lifter position shall be determined after having coordinated with relevant
departments.

4.2 The jig for fixing the test piece shall be a rigid body, and the condition shall be as close
as possible to the state of an actual vehicle.

4.3 The pressure plate to be used shall be, as a general rule, JASO B 407-87, 5.1, Fig.
1-2 AM shaped back pan (Fig. 1) or equivalent.

4.4 The test equipment shall be enabled to apply a Torso line

Pressure plane
backward rotational moment M via the back pan
around the hip point of the back pan (Fig. 1) as
shown in Fig. 2. Also, means shall be provided so
that how many degrees the torso line of the back
pan tilts backward from the vertical line can be

4.5 When matching the hip point of the back pan

with the hip point of the test piece, if the hip point
of the test piece only for the JM50 dummy has
been set, the AM50 hip point shall be set AM type

temporarily, and the hip point of the back pan Torso line

shall be matched with it.

At the time, the AM50 hip point shall be located
at a position 20mm forward and 10mm upward in
the vehicle grid line in relation to the JM50 hip
point. Vertical
line
Also, the centerline of the back pan shall be
matched with the seating center plane of the test
piece.

4.6 Place the back pan so that it will lean on the seatback, and push the back pan 3 times
backward for ensuring smooth motion.

4.7 Apply the backward moment M around the hip point to the seatback. If there occurs a
backward moment due to the self-weight of the test equipment including the back pan
when the back pan has tilted backward, corrections may be made corresponding to it.

4.8 When the value of M has become 530 Nm {54 kgfm}, keep the value, and take color
photos of the state at the side.
Remove the load after that.

4.9 Increase the value of M again, and when it has become 583 Nm, keep the value, and
take color photos of the state at the side.
Remove the load after that.

4.10 In the case of a bench seat or the like, if there are multiple seating positions, loads

corresponding to such multiple number shall be applied at the same time. At the time, if
the back pans interfere with each other and the pans cannot be placed on the seat,
they shall be set by cutting the back pans other than those for the outside seats.

4.11 Remove the load, and check the test piece for any irregularity.

4.12 Organizing data

Organize the results of 4.8, 4.9 and 4.11 in a table.

5. Evaluation criteria and requirements

5.1 During the test in 4.8 or after the test, there shall be no breakage in the seat frame,
seat anchorage and locking system.

5.2 During the test in 4.8 or after the test, there shall occur no crack or deformation in the
seat that will cause danger to the passenger.

5.3 During the test in 4.9 or after the test, there shall occur no crack or detachment in the
seat, which may expose any hard edge portion that will cause danger to the passenger.
Or, when the test has been conducted 3 times under the same conditions, the
requirements of 5.2 shall be satisfied.

5.4 After the test, the moving system of the seat that is accessible by the passenger shall
work even when tried only once.

7. Remarks
7.1 When there is any adjustment device, it shall be adjusted to the position specified in
4.1, but if there is any position that is more disadvantageous than that, whether or not
to carry out the test shall be determined after coordination with relevant departments.

7.2 Other matters shall be determined through separate discussions with relevant
departments.
