PLAN OF INFESTIGATION
In this SBA we will be focusing on “Music”. The main area I would like to focus on is “how
music affects our emotions and our mood”. My reason for choosing this topic is simply to find
out the influence music has on our day to day life and how exactly I can use this information to
improve my life. I hope to gain the knowledge that certain music has that can uplift my work
ethic, make me focus more and how I can introduce persons to different music to help them
improve their way life. Two articles that will aid me with this endeavor will be an article by
“AIMM” on this same subject, and another article that was done by “The Health Care”. These
articles will provide supporting information on this topic and a video which will further
summarizes the effects that music has on the mind. Both written articles have scientific research
and facts supporting the goal of this SBA, the video also gives a further perspective on it. As we
take an analytic approach to this topic, we must remember to keep an open mind as music is a
The first article by “Healthline” was quite an eye opener as to the research that has been put into
the study of music and how it affects our moods and emotions. The article tells about how much
music can affect our lives by lifting our moods or how music can give us some comfort when we
are sad.
The “How does music affect us” by AIMM dives deeper into the research that has been put into
finding out how music affects us. It gave me information about the different research conducted
to find if music can really impact our moods. It also talks about different persons using music
and how it either improve their work ethic, help them to focus and even boost their confidence.
The research from this article gave a more in-depth information that is educational and factual.
Lastly the video provided on YouTube by “Chillhop” shows how music can affect your moods
and emotions. The video is one hour of relaxing music aimed at putting your mind at ease. Even
though words are not present in the video the instruments used to create the music are mixed in
with natural sounds of nature. The video also provides images drawn in a simple colorful style
HEALTH LIFE in their article uses research evidence to support the information they presented
on the effects of music on individuals. The research also made mention of sad music as well as
the effects they have on the individual. It is suggested that sad music as well as other kinds of
music can lifts a person’s mood and that music on a whole is very therapeutic. For example, they
refer to studies such as: one that was conducted by the Durham University in the United
Kingdom and the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland to provide specific examples of the adverse
effects of music on people. These researchers stated that sad music can have adverse effects on
people especially when grieving. This makes their information more reliable as it provides
evidence and is more factual of the effects of music on an individual and is not based on myths.
This also establishes that the information is more objective and reliable.
The AIMM article was quite research heavy, it has information from Journal of Positive
Psychology, Bournemouth University, Dementia Institute and other researchers from the UK
making the article very informative and factual. AIMM used many different sources to give the
requisite information about music and the many ways it affects our moods. One of the sources
suggested that people prefer to listen to upbeat music. The research states the upbeat music lifts
people’s mood and bring a sense of happiness. The U.K. research posited that orchestral music is
very beneficial for persons with dementia as it improves their mood and builds self-confidence.
Evidence of orchestral music was done using other individuals and showed that this type of
music was life changing in a positive way. The writing in the article is very easy to understand,
even though the writer references many institutions and their findings it keeps the article simple
mind. The video used a mixture of music and sound of nature to bring the mind to a relaxing
state. It also used colorful pictures and simple shapes to give the effect of a carefree space. The
instruments used in the video are known for making some of the most melodic sounds in music
and are the ones used mostly to capture the listener’s attention and pierce their emotions with the
music being played. The Chillhop YouTube video uses these instruments well to relax the mind,
while also mixing in sounds of nature to bring the mind in a further state of ease. The music
played proves the point of music being a strong influencer of the moods and emotions of
persons.

New research shows that even sad music can lift your mood, while other studies suggest music
can boost happiness and reduce anxiety. From the drumbeats of our ancient ancestors to today’s
unlimited streaming services, music is an integral part of the human experience. Researchers
have pondered the possible therapeutic and mood boosting benefits of music for centuries. Even
sad music brings most listeners pleasure and comfort, according to recent research from Durham
University in the United Kingdom and the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland, published
in Source. Conversely, the study found that for some people, sad music can cause negative
feelings of profound grief. The research involved three surveys of more than 2,400 people in the
United Kingdom and Finland, focusing on the emotions and memorable experiences associated
with listening to sad songs. Most experiences reported by participants were positive. An earlier
study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found that people tend to prefer sad music
when they are experiencing a deep interpersonal loss, like the end of a relationship. The authors
of that study suggested that sad music provides a substitute for the lost relationship. They
compared it to the preference most people have for an empathic friend — someone who truly
